    Slavemaster President
The Double Career of James Polk
    WILLIAM DUSINBERRE

Suggests that Polk's stance on slavery may have helped precipitate the Civil War

James Polk was President of the United States from 1845 to 1849, a time when slavery began to dominate American politics. Polk's presidency coincided with the eruption of the territorial slavery issue, which within a few years would lead to the catastrophe of the Civil War. Polk himself owned substantial cotton plantations in Tennessee and later in Mississippi and some 50 slaves. Unlike many antebellum planters who portrayed their involvement with slavery as a historical burden bestowed onto them by their ancestors, Polk entered the slave business of his own volition, for reasons principally of financial self-interest. Drawing on previously unexplored records, Slavemaster President "This is a striking and important book. James K. Polk tried to keep his activities as a slaveowner and absentee planter separate from his public life as a politician and, eventually, president. William Dusinberre brings the two sides of Polk's career together again. He has done more than anyone else to examine the lives of Polk's slaves, and reveals often-disturbing evidence about the harshness of their conditions. He also shows how Polk's perspectives as a planter shaped his administration's expansionist policies. This will be essential reading for all interested in the debate on slavery and the origins of the Civil War."-Christopher Clark, University of Warwick

    President James Knox Polk
Served 1845-1849 James Knox Polk was born November 2, 1795, in Mecklenberg County, North Carolina, on his family's farm. As a boy, Polk dreamed of becoming President and worked hard to achieve his goal. After four years of Whig Party Presidents Harrison and Tyler, Polk ran under the Democratic Party banner in 1844 with George M. Dallas as his Vice President. After his election, he was known for his long and hard hours and for his strict religious beliefs. He and his wife, Sarah Childress, had no children. They did not allow drinking or dancing at the White House, not even in celebration of his inauguration. Polk's campaign slogan was "Fifty-Four Forty or Fight," demanding that Britain cede to the U.S. all territory of the Oregon Country south of latitude 54°40'N, as far north as Queen Charlotte Island and the Dixon Entrance, just south of what is now the southern end of Alaska. Once he became President, however, Polk compromised with Britain, settling the U.S. border with Canada at latitude 49°N and avoiding a war. Polk could not avoid a war with Mexico 1846-1848, however, after Mexican troops captured Alamo and the Republic of Texas pleaded for American intervention.

[Editor's Note President Polk is Coming! After the visits of George Washington and James Monroe , 30 years and five presidents came and went before another chief executive graced the streets of the old port city. President James Polk ran into some antipathy in the course of his visit. It was his lot to be presiding over an unpopular war, the one with Mexico from 1846 to 1847. Some hint of the problems President Polk faced is contained in a strongly worded item in the Portsmouth Journal of Literature and Politics on June 26th, 1847:
"BUENA VISTA This according to the New Hampshire Gazette is to be the watch-word for the Polk War Party at the coming election. This is well. Let it be understood, then that we are not called upon to decide between a federalist and some other 'ist', but to vote for or against Mr. Polk's war-for conquest and slavery. Those who are fond of war and blood-shed, those who approve of extravagance and waste and great loans and burdensome taxes, will vote for a representative who will act as Mr. Polk pleases." "But those who are opposed to war," the newspaper continued, "who do not approve of slavery, who are not anxious for conquest, and who deem our present debt and present taxes large enough, will vote for a representative whose views agree with their own. Let the issues in this contest be War and Slavery on the one side Peace and Freedom on the other."

"There is more selfishness and less principle among members of Congress... than I had any conception of, before I became President of the U.S." Young Hickory , as President Polk was often called, spoke these words during the hardest years of his life. Born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina on November 2, 1795, Polk was the 11th president of our nation from 1845-1949. He was the oldest of 10 children raised by Samual and Jane Knox Polk.
James Polk grew to be a studious and industrious worker. At age 17, he survived a gallstone operation without anethesia or antiseptics, which were not used at the time. He went on to graduate with honors in 1818 from the University of North Carolina and became friends with Andrew Jackson while serving in the Tennessee legislature. He was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1823-1825, a member of the House of Representatives from 1825-1839, speaker of the House of Representatives from 1835-1839, and Governor of Tennessee from 1839-1841.
