This site is located on land once owned by the parents of James K. Polk, the 11th U.S. president. The memorial commemorates significant events in the Polk administration: the Mexican War, settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute, and the annexation of California. Reconstructions of typical homestead buildings—a log house, separate kitchen, and barn—are authentically furnished. The Visitor Center features a film on Polk's life and civic contributions. It was here that I received lessons of instructions to which I mainly attribute whatever of success or advancement has attended me in subsequent life." James K. Polk upon his return to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1847 Born in 1795 on the 250-acre farm worked by his parents, Jane and Samuel, James Knox Polk spent most of his childhood among the gently rolling hills of Mecklenburg County. A memorial to our nation's 11th president is located on part of these lands. The log buildings and their furnishings are not original to the Polk homestead but are period pieces that date from the early 1800s. When James was 11, the family sold the homestead and moved west to join James's grandfather in Tennessee. Young James attended academies there, then returned to North Carolina to become an honor student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After graduating in 1818, he traveled back to Tennessee, studied law, and established a practice. In 1824 Polk married Sarah Childress, whose gracious manner and devoted companionship helped further his political career.

Polk Often referred to as the first "dark horse" President, James K. Polk was the last of the Jacksonians to sit in the White House, and the last strong President until the Civil War. He was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, in 1795. Studious and industrious, Polk was graduated with honors in 1818 from the University of North Carolina. As a young lawyer he entered politics, served in the Tennessee legislature, and became a friend of Andrew Jackson. Manifest destiny was a popular doctrine that had been circulating in the US for some time. It involved the belief that Americans had a divine right to bring the western hemisphere under their influence because of their superior level of industry and culture. The western hemisphere was their domain, to be controlled by the US for the well being of all involved. Indeed, before and throughout the duration of the war there were some that actively advocated the annexation of all of Mexico, in the belief that Mexicans could never govern themselves for their own good. Although this philosophy never eventuated, it highlights the sheer arrogance of the American ethos is the attitude to the Mexicans. The origin of this border dispute that lead to the commencement of the war was undoubtedly instigated by Polk with the annexation of Texas, resolved by congress in 1844. Mexico still considered Texas to be a breakaway province, and hence the annexation was considered to be an invasion of Mexican territory by the US. The annexation, in effect, transferred the border dispute between Texas and Mexico in to a US Mexican concern, in effect an undeclared war between the two nations.

President James Knox Polk Served 1845-1849 James Knox Polk was born November 2, 1795, in Mecklenberg County, North Carolina, on his family's farm. As a boy, Polk dreamed of becoming President and worked hard to achieve his goal. After four years of Whig Party Presidents Harrison and Tyler, Polk ran under the Democratic Party banner in 1844 with George M. Dallas as his Vice President. After his election, he was known for his long and hard hours and for his strict religious beliefs. He and his wife, Sarah Childress, had no children. They did not allow drinking or dancing at the White House, not even in celebration of his inauguration. Polk's campaign slogan was "Fifty-Four Forty or Fight," demanding that Britain cede to the U.S. all territory of the Oregon Country south of latitude 54°40'N, as far north as Queen Charlotte Island and the Dixon Entrance, just south of what is now the southern end of Alaska. Once he became President, however, Polk compromised with Britain, settling the U.S. border with Canada at latitude 49°N and avoiding a war. Polk could not avoid a war with Mexico 1846-1848, however, after Mexican troops captured Alamo and the Republic of Texas pleaded for American intervention.
