The first picture is on my page:
Shade Plants, Wildflowers, and Herbs 1.

Since the first picture I have found information about this plant on the Internet.
It is Linaria vulgaris; Common Toadflax
The source I found said it is invasive under certain conditions. I have found it easy to pull out where not wanted. The bloom time in my zone 5 garden is early summer. Sometimes in early spring, I pinch the tops off for a shorter, less floppy plant. Updated 7-22-2002 BACK to Shade Plants,

Pineapple Mint
Great foliagebut very! invasive plant. The fragrance is nice and the flowers are insignificant. Actually, I pinch off as many flowers as I can so it won't spread worse by self-sowing.

COLUMBINE (Aquilegia)
I wanted the color of the dark columbine at left very much. From the entire pack of seeds I had one seedling germinate from the entire package. And surprisingly I had a volunteer come up in a stone container. I read that perennials rated 2 zones below where one lives will survive winter in a container. The pink one was from a package of 'Songbird' columbine seeds. (Shade) Above, German CHAMOMILE (above) FOXGLOVE (Digitalis)
My foxgloves seem to do well wherever they are in the garden. Sun, shade, dry, or moist. I especially enjoy this pure white one. Common Questions about
Wildflowers and Native Plants
Mary H. Meyer Extension Horticulturist, University of Minnesota
Peter Olin Director, Minnesota Landscape Arboretum
What is the difference between a native plant, wildflower, and an "exotic" (non-native) or introduced plant? A native plant is usually defined as one that was growing naturally in a specific area before white or European settlement. A wildflower, also called a forb, is a native plant that grows without human care. Non-native plants are sometimes called "exotics", whether they were introduced hundreds of years ago by settlers and travelers, or recently purchased from a mail order nursery catalog. People, however, aren’t the only agents in plant relocation; they are spread through the actions of birds, animals, wind, and water. Are native plants easier to grow? It depends on the plant, and the garden site. Many natives, like brown-eyed susan ( Rudbeckia hirta ) and purple coneflower ( Echinacea purpurea ), are easy to grow in a wide range of conditions and are found in many states. Others are specific to a certain area and add a unique regional flavor to the landscape.

  • Sustainable Landscaping, The Hidden Impacts of Gardens
On February 26, 2003, Danielle Green of the Great Lakes National Program Office and Dan Welker of Region 3, gave a presentation on “Sustainable Landscaping, The Hidden Impacts of Gardens” at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. As part of the Smithsonian's Horticultural Services Division winter in-service training program, Green and Welker presented information on the environmental impacts to air, water, land and biodiversity of traditional landscaping and offered alternatives such as using native plants in the landscape.
Landscaping with native wildflowers and grasses improves the environment. Natural landscaping brings a taste of wilderness to urban, suburban, and corporate settings by attracting a variety of birds, butterflies and other animals. Once established, native plants do not need fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides or watering, thus benefiting the environment and reducing maintenance costs. Gardeners and admirers enjoy the variety of colors, shapes, and seasonal beauty of these plants.

Habitat:
Wetlands are areas that are permanently or seasonally waterlogged. The wetland is covered or saturated by water for at least part of the year. Wetlands include lakes, rivers, marshes, swamps, bogs and fens. These areas are characterized by standing or moving water. Beaver dams, roads, or natural hills may form a barrier behind which water collects. A lake may form in depressions in the land. Wetlands hold or slow the movement of water. This is important where communities occur close to a wetland. The wet areas also form a habitat that is home to many plants, birds, fish and animals. There are 5 general wetland types in Canada: bog fen marsh swamp , and shallow open water Bog - an open wetland that is characterized by soils consisting almost entirely of organic matter. Water is derived from rain or from seepage from surrounding acid rocks and soils. Vegetation consists largely of Sphagnum mosses, heath family shrubs, and certain sedge species. Bog soils are strongly acid and low in calcium, magnesium and some other essential mineral elements.
  • low in nutrients
  • rainfall and air-fall are the only sources of nutrients

Species new to Minnesota: Rough-fruited fairy bells
by Lynden Gerdes, MCBS Botanist/Ecologist
Location of Rough fruited fairy bells in Minnesota ( Disporum trachycarpum This species was first documented in Minnesota from northern Cook County in 1999 (Gerdes 2001). Rough-fruited fairy bells typically occurs in the northwestern and western regions of the U.S. and Canada. According to Judziewicz et al (1997), the nearest populations of this species to Minnesota are Isle Royale, Michigan; James Bay, Ontario; and Pembina County, North Dakota. Apparently, the three historic locations in Ontario have not been relocated in the past 25 years. (Oldham 2000). In Minnesota, the lone population occurs on a ridge top in a mixed hardwood-conifer forest of jack pine ( Pinus banksiana ), quaking aspen ( Populus tremuloides ) and occasional white spruce ( Picea glauca ), balsam fir (

Introduction
Native or not? Site and soil considerations How to grow a wildflower meadow ... Printable Version Wildflowers and Native Plants
Site and Soil Considerations The characteristics of your garden or landscape site will determine to a great extent the specific kinds of wildflowers or native plants that you can grow. Fortunately, there are wildflowers well suited to practically every niche or setting, from the bog-loving marsh marigold (Caltha palustris) to the desert marigold (Baileya multiradiata). Before deciding what types of wildflowers to grow, take a walk around your property and observe the different kinds of sites you have. Try to gauge the sunlight on particular locations: does a spot receive full sun for many hours a day, is it shaded part of the time, or does the sun filter down through leaves to create a dappled light shade? If you’re observing from late fall through early spring, when trees and shrubs are leafless, picture how much shade wildflowers will get in the summer if planted in their vicinity. Also consider the soils. Are areas dry and parched, or moist and boggy? Are sites protected or exposed? The amount and quality of sunlight received each day can be crucial for native plants. Wildflowers common to prairies and large, open meadows normally grow in full sun, and do best when they receive half a day or more of direct sunlight. Plants classified as savanna or open woodland species prefer growing in partial shade, with sunlight reaching the ground between trees. Woodland plants grow in partial to full shade, beneath a more or less solid canopy of trees.

A Guide for Landscape Architects, Biologists, Gardeners, Developers, and Others who are Involved in Landscaping Richmond Native plants can play an important role in gardens and landscaped areas. Because they are adapted to local conditions, native plants are often more drought-tolerant, easier to care for, and have greater disease resistance than many traditional garden plants. People who grow these plants have the satisfaction of knowing that they are preserving local heritage, being water-wise, and are improving the biodiversity of their communities. Native wildflowers can be an attractive way to add native plants to a home garden. Many also provide food for birds, butterflies and several species of beneficial insects. Several eye-catching perennial wildflowers are shown here. All of the plants listed here are known to be native to Richmond, but are becoming increasingly scarce due to changes in the landscape and the presence of introduced plants and weeds.

Celebrating Wildflowers
The national forests, national parks, national wildlife refuges, grasslands, and millions of acres of public lands are truly America's wildflower gardens. "Celebrating Wildflowers - National Wildflower Week" is annually hosted during the month of May. However, the "Celebrating Wildflowers" program supports numerous events throughout the year. Many events feature the important role that the Nations public lands, over 630 million acres, play in providing diverse habitats for much of America's flora. Celebrating Wildflowers, a collaborative commemoration between the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Park Service promotes the importance of conservation and management of native plants and plant habitats and emphasizes the aesthetic, recreational, biological, medicinal, and economic values of wildflowers.

99. Wildflowers, The Case For Native Plants
without the assistance of cultivation. It is misleading to call nonnaturalizedplants wildflowers , much less to sell them as such.
http://www.prairienursery.com/NeilsPage/AchWriting/WildflowersCaseforNative.htm
Wildflowers The Case For Native Plants by Neil Diboll Prairie Nursery The recent surge of interest in low-maintenance meadows has spawned a plethora of wildflower seed mixes that are now available to the consumer. Most consist of a combination of annuals, biennials, and perennials, but some contain only annuals, and a few are composed purely of perennials. Which wildflower seed mix will best suit your needs?
First and foremost, the gardener should be familiar with the various species that are included in a given wildflower mix. Learn about plant heights, colors, adaptability to region, soil type, and sun conditions. Most commercially available "general purpose" meadow mixes contain a variety of flowers that do best in full sun and tolerate a wide range of soil conditions. Many mixes include a few species that are specifically adapted to dry, regular, or moist soils, so that some seed will almost certainly grow no matter where the mix is planted.
Some vendors sell the same mix nationwide, while many companies offer variations for different parts of the country. Most of these commercial wildflower concoctions are surprisingly similar in content. They usually contain plants from all over the world that tend to exhibit "weedy" behavior: that is, they grow rapidly on an open seedbed. Most are annuals and biennials. This assures quick results, so that the customer is immediately gratified. However, a common problem with these types of wildflower mixes is that by the third or fourth year the annuals and biennials have played out, and been overtaken by undesirable grasses and weeds.
