from those wildflowers. 3 Understand that in nature, a wildflower meadow has twoto three flowers blooming at one time. These are mainly perennial plants.
http://www.gardeningcolorado.com/plants/wldflwrs.htm
Wildflowers W ildflower meadows have become a big trend in landscaping, particularly here in Colorado where they exist in profusion both on the plains and in the mountains. Following are a few tips on what to do correctly to achieve each and every year a meadow worth having. Always start with a weed-free area. Use only sheep or hard fescue for seeding with wildflower seed. Do not use other native and reclamation grasses that could become invasive or get tall and rangy looking. This will create a messy look and distract from those wildflowers. Understand that in nature, a wildflower meadow has two to three flowers blooming at one time. These are mainly perennial plants. Always overseed each year in the spring with an annual seed mix to ensure full color all three seasons. Because annuals do not readily reseed to began with, it is important to overseed each year. Control weeds as they come up with selective pulling or careful application of Round-up to only kill those weeds. Don't let the weeds take over. Add ornamental and structural interest in the meadow such as boulders, buried in ground, or a clump of birch or aspen.

KANSAS WILDFLOWERS AND GRASSES
This site contains information and more than 1400 identification photos for some 350 species of forbs, grasses, sedges, rushes, and woody plants that are found growing in Kansas. All photographs were taken by Mike Haddock. They may be used for educational purposes or personal enjoyment. They may not be downloaded for commercial use, i.e. to derive profit for yourself or your employer. If any of these photographs are used on your website or home page, I would appreciate an acknowledgement as the source and a link to my page in exchange. These photographs should be viewed at color settings higher than 256 Colors, (e.g. 24-bit or 32-bit color settings). Plants that have been added since October 2002 are marked as: NEW I am now including information about each plant's morphological characteristics. I intend to go back and add this descriptive information for all the plants that I have listed, as time permits. This web site has been in existence since 1997. Check out the Noble Foundation Plant Image Gallery . I was on sabbatical leave for several months in 1999, working at the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation in Ardmore, Oklahoma. A major portion of my time was spent assisting Russell Stevens and Chuck Coffey in the creation of this plant identification resource. It features some 2400 photographs of more than 600 species of grasses, forbs, and woody plants found in the southern Great Plains. The Noble Foundation Plant Image Gallery received the 1999 "Best Popular Information / Extension Award" from the Texas Chapter of the Wildlife Society.

Hunter Fact Sheet Playgrounds ... Picnicking
Nestled in the Shawnee National Forest, just minutes south of Carbondale, the area was named for the unique impressions made by its massive sandstone structures. Eons of geological faulting and folding have molded a landscape like none other, which is now clothed in lush garments of fern, moss, large flowering mints, hundreds of species of wild flowers and 75-plus varieties of towering trees. The natural splendor of Giant City has made it a renowned retreat that attracts more than 1.2 million visitors annually.
History
Shelter bluffs, or rock shelters, worn into the sides of the cliffs have revealed evidence of human habitation in this region from as early as 10,000 years ago, and the blackened ceilings caused by their fires are still visible today. On an 80-foot sandstone cliff near the main entrance, one can see the remains of a Native American stone wall that was erected between A.D. 600-800.
The first European settlers moved into the area from Kentucky and Tennessee in the early 1800s, and by 1850, settlers were using the land to cultivate fruit trees. During the Civil War, many of the cliffs and canyons were used as havens by soldiers of both the Union and Confederate armies.
