#910 Field Guide to Plants Shirley Weathers, a new llama breeder in Utah, had a hard time finding out what plants might be
poisonous to her growing llamas herd. So she researched the information, documented the
technical and lay-terms for each dangerous plant, gives detailed description of each plant together
with its known effects on specific livestock species, symtoms of poisoning, possible treatments.

Plants That Are Toxic to Pets (and Humans) This list has been compiled from information gathered from various sources. Because a plant appears on this list does not mean that it will be fatal to your pet if ingested. Some plants are extremely toxic whilst others will just cause a stomach upset or similar symptom, although any plant, eaten in great volumes may cause serious harm. Some of the names may not be familiar to you as plants we know, as plants are known under different names in various regions. I therefore recommend that you check the Latin botanical name rather than the common name. A B C D ... Y A Acacia berlandieri Aloe Vera A. arabica Alstroemeria (The Peruvian Lily) Alyssum sp. The information on these pages was written with pets in particular in mind. However, the same information applies as much to children. Index Preface How these pages came about. Introduction Symptoms List of Plants Poisonous to Pets Preface I am presuming, that by visiting my website, you are a gardener. Many gardeners are keen pet owners as well. How many of us have a prized plant in our garden or house, little knowing that it could actually kill our beloved children or pets. My attention was first drawn to this matter when I saw a posting on one of the gardening newsgroups that I read (uk.rec.gardens), where a question was posted asking for relevant information on plants that were poisonous to pets. Doing a bit of research, basically just out of interest at first, I was surprised how many plants could be dangerous to animals and children. I decided to put this information together on these pages for every pet-lovers benefit (and the pets, of course). Introduction Poisonous plants of some variety are indigenous to most countries. Poisonous plants also are commonly kept as houseplants or used to landscape properties. Luckily, most pets are exposed to only a limited number of poisonous plants and problems can be prevented by avoiding these plants.

Plants Poisonous to your Pets
Whether in the garden or in your home, plants provide us with immense beauty. Unfortunately, many of those plants are also poisonous to pets. Plants which are not toxic to people, like ht hibiscus and the Easter lily family, may cause renal failure in cats and excessive fluid loss in dogs. A morsel of mistletoe can cause digestive upset as well as irregular heartbeats and possible cardiac shock in pets. Common houseplants, like the philodendron can cause your pet's mouth and throat to swell, making her unable to eat. Because pets che2w on almost anything, you'll want to remove or secure plants that are especially dangerous to your pet. Learn the types and names of plants that you have in your yard in case of an accident. If your pet does chew on a plant, immediately remove the plant from her mouth and rinse it out gently with water. Identify the plant your pet ate and call your veterinarian or the Animal Emergency Clinic at 352 Warren Ave. in Portland . Watch for excessive or foamy salivation and changes in the skin around the mouth, eyes, or paws. You can also call the

This is not meant as an all-inclusive list, however if you know your pup is a "chewer", you might want to remove, or fence off, any of the following plants. Remember that these plants are poisonous to children too. If you suspect that your dog has eaten something poisonous, information as to what the substance was can be invaluable to your vet as a guide to treatment. No list of this kind can be complete - it only attempts to list the more common home garden species of toxic plants. Remember too that toxicity can vary with such things as time of year, age of dog and amount consumed. PLANTS POIS ONOUS T O PETS Thanks to Roberta Malott for the idea for this page, and to Bob Hayes for the start of the list. Also, a BIG THANK YOU to Margaret Martin who typed her fingers to the bone to send me most of this list. These are my Yorkie list friends, and I'm so glad to have them.
These pages may be printed out for your own use,
but may not be used on any other web site. Everyone has my
permission to link to these pages if they so wish. For a quick print out of just the plants on this page, click here. Back to Home Page Some plants are known by different names. If you are ever in doubt, you should check with your local nursery. For instance the Calendula. It has a variety of names such as "Pot Marigold" and "Marsh Marigold". It is a deadly plant and has killed pets. I've come to the conclusion that plants and pets do NOT mix. I urge you to take every precaution with your precious pets and keep them away from ALL plants. Toads Another thing you should watch out for is Toads especially the Colorado River Toad. The toads have a sac on their back legs that excretes a strong poison.

Horticulture: Poisonous Plants
Designers should avoid using poisonous plants in therapeutic landscapes, especially if the spaces will be used by children, or by people who are mentally ill or developmentally disabled. Since their bodies are smaller, children are more susceptible than adults to toxins in plants, and they are also more likely (especially when very young) to explore their environment with all of their senses, including taste. Many children's healing gardens encourage this type of exploration, and have been designed with plants that can be smelled, touched, tasted, and so forth.
