05/30/2002 - Updated 04:38 PM ET Plants found blooming earlier in the spring A father and son research team warns that the changing thermal climate may drive some common flowering plants to extinction while permitting plants that now live only in gardens to leap from cultivation and become pesky weeds in the wild. On the Web Resources: Climate change science In a study appearing in the journal Science, the researchers report that the first flowering in the spring of 385 species of British plants has advanced from 4.50 days to 55 days in a decade, when comparing the flowering date of the species over the previous four decades. "These data reveal the strongest biological signal yet of climatic change," wrote Alastair H. Fitter of the University of York and his father, R.S.R. Fitter, a naturalist and author from Cambridge, England, in the study to be published Friday. Starting 47 years ago, the senior Fitter recorded the first flowering date of plants in south-central England. In the new study, the researchers compared the changes in first flowering date with temperature trends in the same area over four decades.

Natural Perspective
The Plant Kingdom : Mosses and Allies
(Last modified: 28 Sep 1997)
Mosses and their allies are small green plants that are simlutaneously overlooked and deeply appreciated by the typical nature lover. On the one hand, very few people pay attention to individual moss plants and species. On the other hand, it is the mosses that imbues our forests with that wonderful lush "Rainforest" quality which soothes the soul and softens the contours of the earth. These wonderfully soft carpets of green are, in fact, Nature's second line of attack in its war against rocks. After lichens have created a foothold in rocks the mosses move in, ultimately becoming a layer of topsoil for higher plants to take root. The mosses also hold loose dirt in place, thus preventing landslides. Ecologically and structurally, mosses are closer to lichens than they are to other members of the plant kingdom. Both mosses and lichens depend upon external moisture to transport nutrients. Because of this they prefer damp places and have evolved special methods of dealing with long dry periods. Higher plants, on the other hand, have specialized organs for transporting fluid, allowing them to adapt to a wider variety of habitats. Bryophytes used to be classified as three classes of a single phylum

Keeping Cut Flowers and
Flowering Plants
Mary H. Meyer, Extension Horticulturist
Department of Horticultural Science
Cut Flowers
Whether cut flowers are grown in a home garden or in a greenhouse by commercial experts, their care is a science. To keep cut flowers beautiful longer; remember that they have been removed from their source of water, the root system, and will wilt quickly if not placed in water. Cut stems should be placed in water immediately, as air will rapidly move into the water-conducting tissues and plug the cells. This is why the cut flower that has been out of water more than a few minutes should have a small portion of the lower stem cut off so that water will move up freely when it is returned to water. Cuts can be made under-water to assure no air enters the stem.
Use a Preservative
Commercial preservatives will increase the life of cut flowers and should always be used. (Adding aspirin, wine, or pennies to cut flowers WILL NOT help to keep them fresh longer. Do not attempt a home brew concoction.) A floral preservative is a complex mixture of sucrose (sugar); acidifier, an inhibitor of microorganisms; and a respiratory inhibitor. Sucrose serves as a source of energy to make up for the loss of the functioning leaves and insures continued development and longevity of the flower.
