Office XXX 101 Phone: 3889 Welcome to plant systematics! This is a combination lecture, lab, and field course which will emphasize the recognition of major families in the flora of Lebanon. The course has the following components: lecture, lab, field trips, exams, and collection. Lectures will review the basic structure of vascular plants and also review the principles of plant taxonomy. Most of the course will center on a review of families. Laboratory sessions will parallel lecture topics, stressing the structure of plants and the characters of families. The purpose of Field trips is to enable you to see plants in their natural setting, to gain an appreciation of their ecology and habitat requirements. Your Collection will give you practical experience in the preparation of herbarium material.
Objectives
Here are my objectives for this course. 1-to be able to recognize the major families in the Lebanese flora; 2-to understand the principles of plant systematics including cladistics and nomenclature; 3-to develop the ability to critical examine plants; 4-to enjoy the wonderful diversity and uses of plants.

Botany 306 Plant Taxonomy Midterm #1 Short answer. If you need more space, use the back of the page. (5 pts. each; 50 total). 1. Define and explain the relationships that exist between taxonomic rank, amount of variation, and number of shared character-states. 2. Listed below are the scientific names used to describe and classify a single species of sunflower known locally as a "Jerusalem Artichoke". For each of the names, identify the taxonomic rank. Name Taxonomic Rank Helianthus tuberosus L. Asterales Helianthus Asteraceae What is the species name? 3. You are hungry and decide to eat a strawberry, a fig, and a handful of shelled peanuts. Describe in botanical terms what you eat and what you discard. 4. Is a banana a berry or a pepo? Argue both sides of the issue. 5. Describe phenetic analysis (philosophy and methodology) and indicate how this differs from the traditional or intuitive approach to classification. 6. You are a taxonomist studying the genus Beatifica which has 5 species. During the course of your work, you perform a cladistic analysis to determine the phylogenetic relationships among members of Beatifica , using a closely related genus as an outgroup. Below is a summary of the characters you chose for the analysis, and the data matrix you obtained after comparing the five species to the outgroup.
