Institute of Medieval Philosophy and Theology
The Boston College Institute of Medieval Philosophy and Theology is a center that unites the teaching and research efforts of the faculty members who specialize in medieval philosophy and theology. Doctoral degrees are awarded in the Theology or Philosophy departments and students are students in one of these departments. The focus of the educational programs is centered on the relationship between medieval philosophy and theology and modern continental philosophy and theology. The concentration of the philosophy and theology departments at Boston College is in modern continental thought, so the context for carrying on a dialogue between medieval and modern philosophy and theology is well established. The study of medieval thought is not carried out as an archeological effort, but with the conviction that the Bible, Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Avicenna, Averroes, Maimonides, Bonaventure, Aquinas, and other classical thinkers have something significant to discuss with modern thinkers. Both the medievals and the moderns are taken seriously. To foster this dialogue and encourage the scholarly retrieval of the great medieval intellectual world, the institute offers graduate student fellowships and assistantships, sponsors a speakers program, runs a faculty-student seminar to investigate new areas of medieval philosophical and theological research, and has set up a research center to assist in the publication of monographs and articles in the diverse areas of medieval philosophy and theology, to encourage the translations of medieval sources, and to stimulate editions of philosophical and theological texts.

Voltaire and Rousseau Islam is a monotheistic religion that affirms the existence of One absolute and perfect God. As it spread by conquest in the 7th century, Islam encountered many new and foreign traditions, including the work of Aristotle . This repeatedly raised a vital question: were non-Islamic ideas to be considered part of the One Truth? In the 9th century, al-Kindi affirmed that philosophy and religion are merely different methods of pursuing the One Truth. Similarly (but more specifically), al-Farabi said that logic is the universal law of regulated thought, while revealed religion expresses truth in the symbols of a particular place and culture.

by Barry Smith and Roberto Casati In the works of Aristotle or of the medievals we find a family of different attempts to come to grips with the structures of common sense and of the commonsense world that is given to us in experience. Naive Physics: An Essay in Ontology Barry Smith and Roberto Casati From: Philosophical Psychology
Introduction In the works of Aristotle or of the medievals, as also in the writings of later common-sense philosophers such as Thomas Reid or G. E. Moore, we find a family of different attempts to come to grips with the structures of common sense and of the common-sense world that is given to us in normal, pre-theoretical experience. We shall argue in what follows that the theory of such structures provides an important and hitherto unappreciated link between early Gestalt psychology on the one hand and contemporary developments in philosophy and in artificial intelligence research on the other. The notion of providing an adequate theory of the common-sense world has been taken seriously of late above all by those, such as Patrick Hayes or Kenneth Forbus, who see in such a theory of what they call `naive' or `qualitative physics' the foundations of future practical successes in robotics. This naive physics is, however, like cognitive science in general, in a state of flux, and a serious philosophical investigation of its presuppositions and achievements has hardly been attempted. Yet it is already at this stage possible to point to a certain apparent defect or one-sidedness of current research in this field that is due to the predominant assumption that it is set theory and related instruments of ontology that are to provide the basis for naive-physical theorizing. The defect arises, we shall suggest, in virtue of the fact that naive physicists working in the A.I. sphere are for obvious reasons concerned with certain specific sorts of formal implementations. Their motivations are in the first place pragmatic, and so their aim is not so much a theory of the common-sense world that could be defended as being
