Hyatt Regency Hotel – Denver, Colorado in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy One of the most neglected aspects of the works of Charles S. Peirce is his religious and theological writings. The symposium will address this lack and also announce the initiation of a new project to publish his religious writings in a book to be edited by Douglas Anderson and Hermann Deuser, called, "The Essential Religious Writings of Charles S. Peirce".

The Society for Philosophical Inquiry About This Site Home Membership Member Resources Contact Us ... About this site A Message from SPI's Founder (Written way back in 1997)
I'm a philosophical inquirer who is devoted to helping philosophy regain its rightful place as a vibrant and vital component of the lives of people who hail from many disparate walks of life. I believe philosophy is the quintessential vehicle for honing one's critical thinking skills, and for cultivating the humanities and pluralism, arguably the lifeblood of civilization. Surprisingly, these "philosophical outreach activities," as I call them, have received some national notoriety; they were deemed of enough interest to merit features in the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle , National Public Radio's All Things Considered , Public Radio International's The World , and San Mateo Times, among many others. The only point in mentioning any of this is that clearly there is interest on a number of fronts in "applying" philosophy (which simply is tantamount to doing philosophy). For those who agree to some degree with at least some of what I've said here, I hope you will consider becoming part of the newly founded Society for Philosophical Inquiry, or, for the acronym lover, SPI.

DISCUSSION GROUPS
A few tips on how to subscribe, unsubscribe and send messages to a discussion group A Web-searchable archive of selected discussion groups has been created by Sebastian Heath and John Muccigrosso. The lists currently archived are: Aegeanet, Ancien-l, Ane-l, Byzans-l, Classics-m, Greekarch, Lt-antiq, Numism-l, and Romarch. The archive will be expanded to include other lists later.
  • AEGEANet is a discussion group on matters pertaining to the Aegean world of pre-classical times, including paleolithic, neolithic, Bronze Age, Geometric and Homeric). To subscribe write to majordomo@acpub.duke.edu with the message "subscribe aegeanet your e-mail address," or simply "subscribe aegeanet."

    MEDIEVAL ACADEMIC DISCUSSION GROUPS
by Edwin Duncan Here is a listing of medieval academic discussion groups you may want to join along with the addresses of the listservers that carry them. Remember that if you are sending a message for the other subscribers to read, don't send it to the listserver but to the name of the network followed by the node address for the listserver. Thus, once you've already joined Ansax-l and want to send a message to its members, you will address it to ansax-l@wvnvm.wvnet.edu, not to listserv@wvnvm.wvnet.edu. Annotations for some of the networks appear in the paragraphs below the list. NETWORK: LISTSERVER ADDRESS: SUBJECT AREA: ANSAX-L is the discussion group for ANSAXNET, the Anglo-Saxon Network. It has over 600 members from fifteen or twenty different countries and, as one would expect from such a large membership, has a fairly high volume of mail. Discussions cover not only Old English language and literature, but also Anglo-Saxon archeology, history, philosophy, and the arts. As with other networks, one also runs across calls for papers, job listings, announcements of new journals, new computer services, and the like. ARTHURNET, a network devoted to all subjects relating to King Arthur and the knights of the round table, has apparently replaced an older and less successful one called CAMELOT, an English network.

The TRICOS website contains no nudity, profanity, pornography, violence or racist material, and would be considered suitable for children by most rating systems. However, it is designed for adults, and those of about 40 years maturity are most likely to be able to appreciate its aims. Therefore, if you are under 18 years of age, you may find it boring, and we suggest that you visit an alternative site.

The discussion is open to all, regardless of Harvard affiliation, and no previous experience is required. Presenting an article consists of selecting a text (often in response to a previous presentation) and initiating the week's discussion with a five-minute summary of the points of interest. Relevant readings for the week are photocopied in advance and made available to those planning to attend. Information about the discussion groups is available through HRP-L, the HRP mailing list.
