General Science From an encyclopaedia essay by Carl B. Boyer,
Hyperlinked by Dr. Matrix Science
(Latin scientia , from scire , "to know"), term used in its broadest meaning to denote systematized knowledge in any field, but applied usually to the organization of objectively verifiable sense experience. The pursuit of knowledge in this context is known as pure science, to distinguish it from applied science, which is the search for practical uses of scientific knowledge, and from technology, through which applications are realized. For additional information, see separate articles on most of the sciences mentioned and biographies of scientists and scholars whose names are not followed by dates. Origins of Science Efforts to systematize knowledge can be traced to prehistoric times, through the designs that Paleolithic people painted on the walls of caves, through numerical records that were carved in bone or stone, and through artifacts surviving from Neolithic civilizations. The oldest written records of protoscientific investigations come from Mesopotamian cultures; lists of astronomical observations, chemical substances, and disease symptoms, as well as a variety of mathematical tables, were inscribed in cuneiform characters on clay tablets. Other tablets dating from about 2000 BC show that the Babylonians had knowledge of the Pythagorean theorem, solved quadratic equations, and developed a sexagesimal system of measurement (based on the number 60) from which modern time and angle units stem. Bacon's contribution to philosophy was his application of the inductive method of modern science. He urged full investigation in all cases, avoiding theories based on insufficient data. He has been widely censured for being too mechanical, failing to carry his investigations to their logical ends, and not staying abreast of the scientific knowledge of his own day. In the 19th cent., Macaulay initiated a movement to restore Bacon's prestige as a scientist. Today his contributions are regarded with considerable respect. In The New Atlantis (1627) he describes a scientific utopia that found partial realization with the organization of the Royal Society in 1660. His

Z HAGEN, FATHER THEODORICH (18-) Mysterious Cistercian abbot who is said to have returned from the Middle-East and ordered swastikas carved on Lamabch Abby where Hitler later attended classes. HALDER, FRANZ (1884-1972) Colonel-General and Chief of the General Staff of the German army (OKH) from September 1, 1938 until fired by Hitler on September 24, 1942. He was arrested by the Gestapo on July 21, 1944, and held in concentration camps until released by the Allies in 1945. HAMMER, ARMAND (18 - 1990) The son of a Jewish immigrant from Russia who founded the American Communist Party. Hammer found fame many times in his life - and notoriety almost as often. He helped support the fledgling Soviet Union, yet went on to become known as one of the world's most successful capitalists. Hammer first found riches and notoriety as a businessman in the fledgling Soviet Union, where he used his operations to help launder money for the communist government. In 1922, Lenin wrote a secret letter to Stalin, designating Hammer as their official "path" to the resources of American capitalism. From his friendship with Lenin, to Occidental Oil, the Nobel Peace Prize, kickbacks to Nixon and sponsorship of Al Gore, Armand Hammer was one of the most mysterious and intriguing figures of the 20th century. Until his death in 1990, many "theorists" suspected him of being a major agent of world-wide conspiracy. (

Biographical Notes
Bayes was a non-conformist minister in England. A version of what is now known as Bayes’ theorem was used in his paper "Essay towards solving a problem in the doctrine of chances," published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London in 1764.
James Bernoulli was the first of the famous Bernoulli family of Swiss mathematicians. He wrote one of the early books devoted to probability, Ars Conjectandi , which was published after his death in 1713. Bernoulli formulated the version of the law of large numbers for independent trials, now called Bernoulli trials, and studied the binomial distribution.
Buffon was the director of the Paris Jardin du Roi and was best known during his time for his thirty-six volume work on natural history. Buffon's famous coin and needle problems are considered to be among the first problems in geometric probability.
Cardano, who lived in Italy, was a man of many interests: law, medicine, astrology, gambling, and mathematics. His book Liber de Ludo Aleae (The Book on Games of Chance), published after his death in 1663, contained perhaps the first mathematical analysis of gambling.
