82 Biographies History is the collective story of all people. Although each and every person has its part in history, the decisions and deeds of some tend to have more influence on the course of history than those of others. Some of these are known, like Churchill or Hitler, some of them are less known, like Turing or Heisenberg. Some we will never know, since the history we know of tends to focus on those events that are reported. Writing but small biographies for only a small collection of those who shaped this troubled times is a task we simply cannot fulfil. We hope that some of our readers feel up to the task of submitting biographies, or perhaps a small addendum to existing ones. Thanks! Order by Surname

The conviction that there is an intimate connection between Wittgenstein's life and his work is shared by the authors. It is legitimated in reference to Wittgenstein's own practice of not wanting to separate the task of becoming the sort of human being he wanted to be from the task of becoming the sort of philosopher he wanted to be. Wittgenstein's life can be characterized by engaging in a search for philosophical clarity as well as ethical decency ( Anständigkeit ). It can be reasonably said that a good philosophical biography illuminates aspects of this connection between life and philosophy. This ideal is not just confined to the special case of Wittgenstein. We have to keep in mind that most ancient philosophers equated the search for truth with the search for the good life. Socrates would not even have understood how a good philosopher could be differentiated from a good person. This historical fact might at least throw some doubt on the legitimacy of the modern understanding of philosophy as a predominantly professional endeavor and an autonomous discipline among others without any relation to biographical issues.

    Biographies of Famous Vegetarians
Throughout history, many of the world`s greatest philosophers, writers, scientists, artists, spiritual leaders, and teachers have been adherents and/or enthusiastic supporters of vegetarianism. Following are some very brief biographies of some of the most famous. This is not meant to be a complete listing, nor are the biographies meant to discuss all aspects of each person`s life. This section aims to provide an idea of some of the vegetarian activities and teachings of several extraordinary people who have promoted vegetarianism. Agnon, Shmuel Yosef (1888 - 1970, Hebrew author) Agnon is a central figure in modern Hebrew fiction. He wrote many novels and short stories about major contemporary spiritual concerns. He won the Israel Prize for Literature in 1954 and 1958 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1966, the first time that honor was given to a Hebrew writer. Agnon was a devout Jew who spent much of his life in Israel. He was extremely dedicated to vegetarianism and wove vegetarian themes into many of his stories. His great sensitivity to all creatures is indicated in the following excerpt from his speech upon receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature: Lest I slight any creature, I must also mention the domestic animals, the beasts, and the birds from whom I have learned. Job said long ago (35:11) "Who teacheth us more than than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fouls of heaven?"

    Hubertine Auclert
Born into a well-off, provincial family, the fifth of seven children, Auclert was always financially secure but suffered the emotional trauma of being orphaned and placed in a convent orphanage after the death of her parents. Like other leading republican feminists, she was a militant anticlerical. Unhappy at their unwillingness to prioritise the issue of political rights, however, she broke with them and founded her own feminist society (the Société le droit des femmes , which in 1883 became the Société le suffrage des femmes ). In 1881 she launched a newspaper La Citoyenne In 1880-81 she went on a tax strike, arguing that without representation she should not be subjected to taxation. Antonin Lévrier, a lawyer friend who advised her on this strategy, became her husband in 1888 and for four years they went to live in Algeria where Lévrier was made a judge. After his death, which had a devastating impact upon her, she returned to France in 1892, but was unable to maintain La Citoyenne Auclert was one of the few French feminists who openly admired the British suffragette movement and was prepared to emulate its tactics. At the age of 60, in May 1908 she symbolically smashed a ballot box during municipal elections in Paris, though the authorities, not wishing to make her into a martyr, gave her only a minimal fine for her misdemeanour. France was never to experience anything like the violence unleashed by the suffragettes in the UK.

Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), third president of the United States(1801-1809) and author of the Declaration of Independence, was one of the most brilliant individuals in history. His interests were boundless, and his accomplishments were great and varied. He was a philosopher, educator, naturalist, politician, scientist, architect, inventor, pioneer in scientific farming, musician, and writer, and he was the foremost spokesman for democracy of his day. He was a direct descendant of Thomas Randolph signer of the Declaration of Arbroath who was also a nephew of Robert de Bruce. As president, Jefferson strengthened the powers of the executive branch of government. He was the first president to lead a political party, and through it he exercised control over the Congress of the United States. He had great faith in popular rule, and it is this optimism that is the essence of what came to be called Jeffersonian democracy. Jefferson swore his hostility, he said, to "every form of tyranny over the mind of man." During his lifetime he sought to develop a government that would best assure the freedom and well-being of the individual.
