Country Flag ... Travel Warning History The Negritos were the original inhabitants of the Philippines who arrived some 25,000 years ago. However, archaeological findings suggest that there were earlier settlers. There were other waves of migrations of Indo-Chinese, who were followed by the Malayans. In 1521, the Portuguese voyager Ferdinand Magellan arrived and found the islands to be thriving centers of commerce with traders from India, Arabia and China. Powerful Islamic influence was established in 1380 the Arab-taught Makdum. However, the arrival of Magellan who claimed the archipelago for Spain facilitated the growth of Christianity and the emergence of a new culture.

Part II: Doing Business
Business Culture
Values in society
The Filipino culture is a mixture of Malay, Spanish and American cultures. Optimism and tolerance are typical features of the Filipino society and business culture. Filipinos are among the most hospitable people in the world. The fact that everybody speaks English makes it easy to feel comfortable. However, this might sometimes give rise to mistaken feeling of security and trust. For a Filipino it can be difficult to distinguish between an objective task and an emotional involvement. The power distance is high in the Filipino culture and as in Latin cultures generally, masculinity is a prevailing value. Family ties are also very strong and can even affect businesses. The high respect given to age should be taken into account when choosing representatives in the Philippines. Until recently, everything foreign has been appreciated highly in the Philippines. However, because of the economic development of the country, a healthy sense of nationality is rising. But still the valuation of imported products remains very high among average consumers.
Concept of time
Social Networks
Filipinos believe that human interaction and contact form the basis of a successful business relationship. In the Philippines it's really important who you know and who knows you. Name dropping is a normal way of getting to know people and in establishing relationships. Personal relationships mean everything, things can't simply be handled by fax and telephone.

The population of the Philippines according to the latest census reached over 80 million of which approximately 15 % live in Metro Manila. Most of them are of Indo-Malay, Spanish and Chinese descent. This 'Pearl of the Orient' developed out of the many foreign influences of the past. Long before the Portuguese discoverer Ferdinand Magellan "discovered" the Philippines, Chinese, Japanese and Arabian traders bartered goods with the natives. The close affinity with the family is linked to the influence from the Chinese and has a major role still in today's family lives. Unlike in other cultures family life goes beyond the relation ship between children and parents. It includes grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and even up to second or third cousins. Family gatherings are always huge affairs. Advise of eldest is often thought and followed. The eldest sibling is the one most respected and consulted after the parents. Early kids learn to show respect to elders. One can observe children greeting parents or grandparents having their foreheads touched by the palm of their elders. The most common form of expressing respect is the adding of "po" or "opo" to their sentences when they address elders.

Halo-Halo Culture and Ningas Cogon : The Intercultural Minefield Halo-Halo Culture and Ningas Cogon : The Intercultural Minefield Clarence Henderson, 8th June 2002 It has been 30 some years since I first spent time in Asia, over 20 years since I first got to know Filipinos high above Cayuga's waters, and nearly 20 years since I married my lovely Filipina wife and her family (not meant flippantly, just reflects reality). I spent years studying Asian culture, including considerable exposure to the gurus of human behavior in both Eastern and Western traditions, and have had several intimate, monogamous (if not long-term) relationships with Asian women (don't tell my wife! Just joking, of course she knows...). I have conducted cultural orientations for ex-pat executives during which I enlighten 'em about the nuances of low-context versus high-context culture, the importance of Smooth Interpersonal Relations, and where to find German sausages or brie cheese in Manila. And, of course, I have spent the last three years creating these Pearls. Given that, one might think (a) that I would have a thorough understanding of Filipino culture, (b) that I could easily handle any multicultural conflict that might raise its pointed little head, and (c) that such in-depth cultural exposure would translate into smooth circumnavigation of the East-West cultural divide.

Culture
The Philippines has developed a mixed culture from the blending of foreign influences with native elements. Today, the Muslims, and some of the isolated tribes, are the only people whose culture remains unadulterated by Spanish and American influences. Although traditional theatre, literature and kundimans (love songs) in the national language have experienced a resurgence since Cory Aquino's People Power movement, visitors are more likely to witness beauty contests, lurid soap operas, violent and sentimental Filipino movies, and local bands perfectly imitating Western pop tunes. About 10% of Filipinos (the so-called cultural minority groups or tribal Filipinos) retain their traditional culture. There are some 60 ethnological groups, ranging from the Badjao of the Sulu archipelago, who are sea gypsies, to the head-hunting Kalinga in the north of Bontoc. The Philippines is the only Christian country in Asia. Over 90% of the population claim to follow Christian faiths. The largest of the minority religious groups is the Muslims, who live chiefly on Mindanao and in the Sulu archipelago. There is also a Philippine Independence Church, some Buddhists, and a small number of animists. The geography and history of the Philippines have conspired to produce a multiplicity of languages, some 80 dialects in total. The concept of a national language developed after the Spanish-American War in 1898 and Tagalog was declared the national language in 1936. There were several other contenders for this role, including Cebuano, Hiligaynon and Ilocano. A compromise reached in 1973 confirmed Pilipino as the national language. This is based on Tagalog, but has linguistic elements of other Philippine languages. Despite this, English remains the language of commerce and politics in the Philippines.

Having been raised in one of the remote barangays in one of the remote provinces in Philippines, went to college in the city, and currently living in the U.S., I can relate to most of the things discussed in this book and how foreigners react to them. I still find our culture fascinating and I wouldn't hesitate to explain this to a foreigner who's interested to listen. But why the choice for the cover? Wouldn't it be nice if you put a picture of a 'bayanihan' or a child giving a 'mano po' to an elderly, instead of a man in white mask with a San Miguel Beer and a cigarette in hand? I know 'Sinulog' in Cebu, 'Dinagyang' in Iloilo, and 'Ati-ati' in Aklan, but these festivals do not reflect the 'culture shock' that's discussed in the book. It might give an impression that there's a lot of 'voo-doo' practitioners in the Phillipines. Ok..ok...let's not just the book by it's cover...Excellent reading for your 'Americanized' kid or your American in-law.
