Areas of Specialization Areas of Competence Dissertation Dynamics of Consciousness: Phenomenology, Neuroscience, and Dynamical Systems Theory ABSTRACT: Phenomenologists and computational neuroscientists both invoke sets of possible states: on the one hand, sets of possible experiences (what Husserl called horizons), on the other hand, sets of possible brain-states. In the dissertation I integrate phenomenology and neuroscience by arguing for a supervenience relation between these sets, where supervenience is construed as a certain kind of mapping. This mapping is metaphysically neutral insofar as it is compatible with most varieties of monism and dualism, but strong enough to ground cross-domain inferences. I am currently Associate Professor at the Philosophy Department and Graduate Faculty at the Center for the Pacific Rim at the University of San Francisco. I was born and raised in Kamakura , Japan. All of these conscious states can be seen as part of the contents of consciousness. Furthermore, most conscious states can be seen as having representational contents of their own, in the sense that they are about something: objects and states of affairs in the world, or states of our own body. The contents of these states are all presented to us, in William James's powerful metaphor, as part of a "stream of consciousness". The contents of consciousness raise many important questions: Just how rich is the content present in conscious experience? Do the contents of attention exhaust the contents of consciousness, or is there consciousness outside attention? What is the neural basis of the representation of conscious content? How does consciousness of our own body differ from consciousness of the external world? What methods are available to monitor the contents of consciousness in an experimental context? What is the relationship between consciousness and representation? All of these questions have been actively discussed in recent years by neuroscientists, psychologists, philosophers, and other researchers.

Biography
Dean Komel was born 1960 in Bilje. He studied philosophy and comparative literature at the Faculty of Arts (University of Ljubljana). In 1994-95 he proceeded his studies in phenomenology and hermeneutics at the University of Bochum (Germany) under Bernhard Waldenfels. He received Ph. D. in 1995 and assistant professorship in 1996 at the University of Ljubljana. He taught at the Faculty of Social Sciences before joining the Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Arts in 1998. He teaches courses: Introduction to Philosophy, Hermeneutics and Philosophy of Culture. He is currently President of the Phenomenological Society of Ljubljana and a member of several philosophical societies, project groups and editorial boards of the journals for philosophy and culture.
Research interests
Hermeneutics, phenomenology, philosophy of culture, anthropology, history of philosophy, philosophy of art, philosophical translation and terminology, Slovene philosophy, European cultural identity and differences.

Friendly to Continental Philosophy Philosophy Department Earlham College Graduate Programs in Continental Philosophy." let me know "Continental philosophy" means the serious, non-analytic study of the history of philosophy. I do not believe that continental philosophy is best studied in analytic departments. The following list includes the exciting departments in the US, which offer compelling and thought-provoking philosophy. The schools are in alphabetical order. This is not a ranking. Of course these schools are not equal in quality or in friendliness to Continental philosophy. I provide more information about some graduate programs (a very brief description and the list of the faculty). Hopefully, there will eventually be such information for all departments. Any input in this effort is appreciated. If you are looking for a Continental graduate program, you need to get current information on these schools (from their catalogues, from their web sites, or from their current students) and make your decision in that light. Late in the nineteenth century, a group of Austrian philosophers grew dissatisfied with the excessive subjectivity fostered by the philosophy of the later German idealists . Borrowing their methods from the emerging sciences of psychology and sociology, these phenomenologists sought to restore a proper balance by securing the objectivity of experiential content at all costs.
Brentano
The basic approach of phenomenology was first developed by Franz Brentano , who was influenced both by scholastic versions of Aristotelian thought and by the radical empiricism of Hume . The central concern of philosophy, Brentano supposed, is to understand the nature and content of awareness in ways that illuminate the distinction between the mental and the non-mental. In Psychologie vom empirischen Standpunkt ( Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint (1874) Brentano proposed that every mental act be understood to have a doubly significant representational function, designating both itself reflectively and a phenomenal object intentionally . Indeed, this distinction between acts and their objects precisely delineates the crucial distinction for Brentano, since

dgboland © 2001 "Is it possible, as the Pope seems to try and do, to reconcile Thomism with phenomenology?" is a question that has recently been put to us. It would be useful first of all to define the terms of the question. As we may presume that most of our readers will have a pretty good idea of what Thomism is, the task of definition principally relates to the word "Phenomenology". As most would be aware, it is the name for a philosophical movement that owes its origin to Edmund Husserl. It came to prominence in the early part of the last century and has had profound influence on the whole range of contemporary thought. It is obviously a movement of some significance even today. So as not to be accused of colouring our definition of it, let us take over for this purpose, without necessarily accepting what is said in it, one of the many descriptions of Phenomenology that can be found simply by searching the internet.

Semester (view timetable) Contact Two 1-hour lectures per week for the first 11 weeks, and a 1-hour tutorial per week beginning the third week of semester Subject Description This subject is a study of some classic texts and major themes in the twentieth century philosophical traditions of phenomenology and existentialism. Themes to be discussed will include consciousness and perception, being-in-the-world, embodiment, truth and evidence, the phenomenological method, and the meaning of transcendental philosophy. The main authors to be discussed will be selected from Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty and Sartre and their texts will be discussed in the light of contemporary interpretation and criticism. On completion of the subject students should be able to engage in detailed exegesis of philosophical texts and to critically examine philosophical arguments and theses therein. Assessment A 2-hour examination, and written assignments totalling 2000 words, and regular attendance and participation in tutorials.
