Introduction
We couldn't have planned it, but I think we dreamed it and now it's coming true: immigration to Australia, settling in Mittagong, finding acreage that backs up to a nature reserve, starting a company, and taking a course in permaculture have all come together to support the Jensen family as we endeavor to create a robust childhood and heritage for our sons.
The following virtual tour and online resources support the evolving design taking place at the end of a hilly street in the Southern Highlands.

TRAINING IN SUSTAINABLE LIVING
“Empowerment through Education
Compiled By :- Gavin Eichler and Neil Evans Tel: Cell:
INTRODUCTION In South Africa there is a large population of people living in relatively poor conditions, where they own small pieces of land on which they carry out small-scale farming and micro-enterprises for survival. Apart from this, they may own very few or no other resources. Ecosystems recognizes that a large part of our society face numerous socio-economic problems, the main one being unemployment. We are therefore exploring strategies to develop economically viable and sustainable enterprises, based on experience and a understanding of how resources in general, and household resources in particular, are managed, and the gender dynamics involved. In Kwazulu-Natal many initiatives are undertaken for instance to develop tourism and craft making. However alternative income-generating activities (IGA’s) within and outside agriculture need to be developed in order to address these socio-economic problems, and to ensure household food security. We also feel that nutritional knowledge is seriously lacking in our communities and we at Ecosystems will be addressing it, as part of our training program.

Those sheep may be called Awassis, or South African Mutton Merinos in W.A.. I know some people (James and Chris Ryan at West Point Pastoral Co., Bedford Harbour, West Australia) who are mating the merinos to rams of this breed. They grow very fast, have a herding nature, and a very strong constitution. Speaking to the stock manager at West Point this week and apparently some of the merino mums are dying from Barber's Poll worm, but the first cross lambs are having no troubles. Their genetic traits are very strong so the merino ewes can be used for mating to source male progeny. I have a sneaking suspicion that they may also be suitable for milking, given that they have a rapid lamb growth rate. They have something like an 8 month gestation period, and the rams don't need to be pulled out of the "herd". 1. Why do we need LandCare? Land degradation and water shortages are serious environmental issues facing South Africa today. This affects each and every person—through the economy, through the environment, through poverty in our communities and eventually our quality of life. Most of South Africa receives an irregular rainfall and a relatively dry climate. Also, much of our cropland and grazing land has deteriorated as a result of the influences of soil erosion, overgrazing, salinity, bush encroachment, alien plants and the prevailing socio-economic issues. Land degradation is costing millions of Rand each year in lost production alone. If we include treatment of degraded land and nutrient loss, research and other costs related to pollution and the silting of our waterways, the costs add up to several billion Rand a year. This is a cost that our whole community has to bear. If nothing is done, we will almost certainly face higher food costs, loss of income and loss of biological diversity. But it’s not all that bad. People are realising the problems and exploring solutions. Now there is a LandCare programme with dedicated people who want to change things around.

Summary
The political and economic development in the countries in the Southern Africa, Subregion (Botswana, Lesotho, South Africa and Swaziland) is weakened by wars and civil unrest in some of these states and in neighboring countries, weak economies, unemployment and social discontent from the population in the region. The countries are ruled by majority governments, however political conflicts between and within parties are dominant. Lesotho is still struggling with the aftermath from the unfortunate "black September in 1998" which was a political and economic setback for the country. The conflict mechanism established at that time, to resolve the problems and lead to free and fair elections within 15-18 months, have not been successful. The long awaited elections did not take place in 2000, and the preparations have hardly begun. The December local elections in South Africa took place peacefully. However, the participation was low and cannot bee seen as a support to the ruling ANC party government. In Swaziland the opposition is struggling for the democratic changes they have been promised for a long time.

The purpose of the Association for Baha'i Studies Agriculture Seminar is to call attention to the emphasis that the Baha'i Writings place on agriculture and its importance to community, and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and for consultation on the practical application of these Writings. The Agriculture Seminar is a network of Baha'is interested in agriculture and community development, some of whom have formed regional groups, and several of whom have initiated agricultural projects that work in cooperation with the seminar. The seminar's organizing committee believes agriculture to be a crucial issue, both because of its prominence in the Writings and because of the events of these times. It is the hope of the committee that the seminar can make a contribution to meeting the spiritual and material challenges ahead.

First prize - Nansindlela Primary School, KwaZulu Natal
When the project began, the school was unattractive and had lots of bare ground. There were no flower or vegetable gardens. Now there are trees, flowers, vegetables, pathways, play areas and a pond. Water is pumped from a small pond using a pedal powered pump (which affords the children as much fun as it is useful). Soil is mulched using leaves, grass cuttings, newspapers, cardboard and sticks. A big box of earthworms produces compost. Nothing goes to waste at Nansindlela. Scrap paper is used for mulching and also for making papier mache in art class. Cans are collected for recycling. Glass jars are used for storing paint and other liquids. Juice and milk cartons are utilised as planters. Phone cards are painted over and made into plant labels.

(A) INTRODUCTION We all eat. But few of us have anything to do with the source of our daily fare. We trust that healthy and ample food will appear, like magic, in the grocery store. We trust the corporations, the "food system", that creates this apparent miracle. But there are troubling questions. What are the effects of agri- chemicals - on consumers, farmers, farms, and the environment? secure food supply? How can we best feed a growing population, with a decreasing amount of farmland? Who are the vested interests, and who can be believed? What are the alternatives?
