Cuban Orisha Percussion are ritually consecrated and are particularly pleasing to the orishas. In ceremonies where there is a less rigorous protocol, other instruments can be used, such as (large gourd rattles that are strung with beads or seeds), conga drums and a guataca (a hoe blade or cowbell played with a striker). Orisha percussion generally accompanies singing in which deities are praised and invited to descend upon their devotees. Though most Orisha percussionists play mainly for religious ceremonies, some occasionally appear in nightclub shows, museum programs or similar settings. Orisha percussionists believe that, when they perform in secular contexts, they help audiences gain a new perspective on a religion that is often misunderstood.

Percussion Instruments from Around the World
Percussion instruments have been around for thousands of years in every culture in the world. They have been used in many different ways, such as communicating with neighboring communities, accompanying dance, and facilitating ceremonies and rituals. In the United States, enslaved African Americans used "juba," a style of body percussion that was used to communicate emotions and ideas without speaking or even having an instrument to play.
There are many different percussion instruments. "Percussion" comes from the Latin word percutere, which in English means, "to strike." Not all instruments classified as percussion actually make their sounds by being struck. Some are shaken, clapped together, or even scraped (guiro). Some percussion instruments are pitched, and others are non-pitched. What most of them have in common, though, is performing a rhythmic function in music.
Pitched Percussion
Some percussion instruments can play different pitches. Timpani

Percussion Instruments
Percussion instruments include drums, tambourines, cymbals, bells and gongs. If you stretch a material tightly across a tube and hit it, it will vibrate. This is the basis of the drum or tambourine. When you hit cymbals or gongs and ring bells, they also vibrate and make sounds.

Chant of Drums The form of call and response between groups of instruments and solo instruments, and the utilization of pitched instruments solely for maintaining the rhythm on the two notes F and C are among the unique features of this work. In certain cases, as a reminder of a particular spiritual space or mood, the melodic nature of the instruments has been used in light motifs. Using techniques of counterpoint and orchestration, Chant of Drums is composed for percussion instruments and spiritual melodies without lyrics. The unintelligible voices, which are often unconsciously uttered by the dervishes at climactic points during spiritual gatherings, have been used for rhythmic emphasis as well as further stressing the states of trance. This composition is comprised of seven parts. It has an episodic form, and at the same time the repetition of a variance of the first part at the end of the seventh, renders it a cyclical form. The following percussion instruments have been used in this composition: Daf Dohol

Musical Instruments Percussion Instruments A percussion instrument is probably best defined as one where a resonating surface is struck by the player, either by hand or by some form of stick. These divide roughly into tuned instruments which have a definite pitch or series of pitches, and those of indefinite pitch. Popular examples of both types are: Tuned timpani or kettle drum, xylophone, glockenspiel, tubular bells, vibraphone, marimba. Occasionally, the piano and celesta (see below) are included in scores as part of the percussion section.

Perhaps the most universally familiar percussion instrument is the drum , common to the most primitive as well as the most sophisticated musical arts. Sticks clicked against each other are another simple form of percussion. These are related to castanets cymbals , and the triangle . Among the percussion instruments used in the West are the bell , the celesta , the glockenspiel , and the xylophone (marimba). In general, percussion instruments are not tuned by construction; pitch, tone, and volume depend on the skill of the performer. See
