  • Can I major in education at Pitt? If not, what should I major in? Why is Pitt a graduate school of education? What is an Instructional I certification? What certification programs are offered at Pitt? ... Who can I talk to for more information?
  • 1.) Can I major in education at Pitt? If not, what should I major in? No; there is no education major at Pitt. Instead, undergraduates are encouraged to declare majors in related fields, or other fields of interest, and work closely with their academic advisors on taking the needed prerequisites. Generally, individuals interested in secondary education certifications choose a major in the field closest to their intended certification, e.g., chemistry, French, English literature, etc., while those interested in elementary certification often choose from among the disciplines that develop strong interpersonal skills, such as psychology, liberal studies, child care/child development, etc. Education Pre-Admissions Advisors are also available to meet with undergraduates to determine which prereqs are needed (See Question #27). 2.) Why is Pitt a graduate school of education?

Pennsylvania - Return to the "What's Happening in the States?" Page - Updated March 16, 1998 Pennsylvania Pennsylvania has had an interesting process of evolving beginning teacher programs that stretches back about 30 years! The state began it's support programs with the Teacher Intern Certification Program (TICP) since at least . The TICP was a program that supported any of the new teachers who were entering the teaching career through an alternate route, other than through a university or college teacher education program. The state TIC Program "encouraged" mentoring of all beginning teachers but did not provide any state funding to support district programs. From 1969 to 1983 the TICP was just open to graduate level interns. Then in , the TIC Program was changed to allow any person with a B.A. to enter teaching through this alternate route program. The program was described as a "support and evaluation program". The program had general requirements which expected the local districts to develop their own support and evaluation approaches that were in line with the state guide lines. The interns were supervised by a committee of the principal, an experienced teacher (mentor) and a faculty member from a teacher education institution. Principals, not mentors, evaluated the new teacher's performance. Interns had to pass a state test and complete the induction program. New teacher interns had to earn a more advanced teaching certificate, which was required by the sixth year, for a person to be able to continue teaching.

Competency is judged by an interdisciplinary committee of the faculty. Requirements for admission Introduction to Education, Education 14, should be taken by the end of sophomore year, if at all possible. We will not formally admit students to the teacher certification program until they have completed this course. Practice Teaching, Education 16, and the Curriculum and Methods Seminar, Education 17, are regularly taken first or second semester senior year, or in a ninth semester after graduation. Students preparing for certification must attain a grade point average of B or above; in order to do Practice Teaching, they must have at least a B- in Introduction to Education and the recommendation of all Education faculty who have taught them. In order to be certified each candidate must pass the specific PRAXIS exams required by Pennsylvania for their certification area.

Intern Teacher Certification Utilization of the Program The intern teacher certification program at Millersville University is reserved almost exclusively for two categories of students. First, persons who are already teaching in private schools without a standard instructional certificate are seen as appropriate candidates for this program. Their admission to this program permits the use of their employment setting to fulfill field placement requirements. Second, school districts are sometimes very desirous of employing certain uncertified individuals for very specific reasons. Inclusion in the intern program makes such arrangements possible. Admission to the Program The prospective student must first apply to the Graduate Studies Office. This application seeks admission to Millersville University as a post-baccalaureate certification student(see Post- Baccalaureate Certification Program ). The University's receipt of the appropriate materials sets in motion the process of reviewing the candidate's credentials and determining the sequenced requirements which must be met for recommendation for certification. This review process is done on an individual basis. If the student decides to enroll, he/she is admitted as a regular post-baccalaureate certification studentnot a teacher intern. Fulfillment of the Program In fulfilling the program the student must complete the courses and field assignments as listed on the individual requirement sheet produced through the review of credentials. All courses listed thereon must be completed. The student teaching assignment will be undertaken as early in the program as possible. This assignment will be in the place of employment where the intern certificate is being used. The university student teaching supervisor will be assigned to the intern student. That university supervisor will conduct at least the university required minimum number of classroom observations and conferences indicated for student teaching supervision. The university supervisor will be available for student-initiated contacts. Since the intern teacher has no cooperating teacher for support, the university supervisor is aware that the intern teacher might require more attention and support than might otherwise be indicated.

Post-baccalaureate studies are ideal for adults who have already earned a bachelor’s degree but who wish to make themselves more marketable, broaden their professional knowledge, or prepare for a career change. A full- or part-time course of supplementary undergraduate study can help you meet your career goals.
    Admission Categories:
Special Status Second Bachelor’s Degree Second Bachelor’s Degree – Instructional Level 1 Certification Additional Teacher Certification Special Status Special status gives students the flexibility to explore new interests, expand their knowledge areas, and prepare for graduate study. Because students admitted under special status are seeking personal enrichment and not officially pursuing a degree, financial aid is not available to them. Second Bachelor’s Degree (non-teaching) Once you are accepted to the second bachelor’s degree program, your official transcripts will be evaluated according to your intended major. Ninety-four (94) credits will be "transferred" to your new program. You are then responsible for (1) earning a minimum of 30 additional IUP credits and (2) meeting the requirements for graduation established by the department and college in which the new degree is to be earned. Your prior coursework and the requirements for your new degree may demand completion of more than 30 undergraduate credits.
