James Greene, a faculty member in family science, does not fall into either of those categories. In 1962 Greene served a mission in Hong Kong for two-and-a-half years. While serving, he learned to love the Chinese people and language. After returning home from his mission, Greene met and married his wife, JoAnn, a native of Phoenix, Ariz. They now have six children. The Greenes kept their options open, however, and when the last opportunity arose for Greene to take his sabbatical, they seriously considered going to China. At that time in 1999, their youngest daughter, Jessica, who was 15, was playing volleyball in junior high. The family applied to teach in China through the BYU Kennedy Center for International Studies. They received notification of their acceptance in February 2000 and were assigned to the Shandong Teachers University in Jinan, China, a city of five million people located about 200 miles south of Beijing.
