Maximilian Blue Head White Cap Bronze Wing While being secluded from city life of the hustle and bustle, our parrots get no complaints from neighbors. We are nestled on the other side of the mountains from the Los Angeles basin. In the foot hills below Wrightwood, California over looking the well known Mojave Desert. We are only 10 miles from our local mountain resort which is Wrightwood, it is a pretty place to visit and above Wrightwood is Mt. High Ski Resort . Its very popular for those who like to snowboard and ski that live in the greater Los Angeles basin and surrounding areas. Our closest large city to drive to is 25 miles away but we have a small shopping area 3 miles away. Some might think that we are in the middle of no where but believe me, we are somewhere! We have four seasons here, summers are short and can sometimes be fairly hot when a heat wave comes our way. The elevation here is 4600 feet above sea level. It is as much as 10 degrees cooler here than where we shop at just a few miles away. The winters are cold, we get snow here. The Pionus' do well with the cold weather. Temperatures can drop as low as 15 degrees above zero, so far no problems. I once tried to breed the African Greys but they do not handle cold weather very well, so I don't breed them anymore. General Parrot Cichlid Information Different Breeds of Parrot Cichlids There is much confusion surrounding the many types of Parrot Cichlids. This page will attempt to familiarize you with all of them. Be aware, there is another fish that goes by the common name "Parrot Cichild" ( Hoplarchus Psittacus ). Make sure, when referring to Parrot Cichlids, others are aware that you mean Blood Parrot Cichlid, or the Hybrid Parrot Cichlid and not Hoplarchus Psittacus. Unique Traits Blood Parrots have many features that set them apart from other cichlids. The most obvious is the "beak" they possess for a mouth. A true Parrot Cichlid is unable to close its mouth, but instead, uses the muscles in the throat to chew or crush food. It's a misconception that these fish can't eat from the surface. Every Parrot Cichlid owner I have encountered, including myself, report that theirs eat easily from the surface. It's also been commonly stated that Parrot Cichlid's have deformed swim bladders. These organs control buoyancy and allow the fish to maintain a certain depth in the water column. If they do have swim bladder problems, it's not evident in the ones I keep. Many people think that, due to this deformity, the fish must constantly swim to stay afloat and keep level. In most cases, I have also found this to be untrue. I can however, agree with the fact that Parrot Cichlid's possess a deformed spine, this is one the reasons they have such a unique shape. I don't believe it to be much of a problem for them. I've had reports of Parrot Cichlids living perfectly good lives for up to 10 years.

General Information on Pionus Parrots. © Jennie Bolton These Items are reproduced with the kind permision, of the Vice-Chairman of The Pionus Breeders Association Pionus parrots are small to medium sized, slightly stocky birds from Central and South America. They are distinguished by large eyes with a bare eye ring, short tails, and a triangular patch of red feathers around the vent. Some are predominantly green with accents of white, plum or iridescent blue, while others are a riot of blue, violet, green, teal, bronze, even purple. There are seven species, five of which are common enough in captivity to be available as pets. Pionus are easy to keep, but, like African Grey parrots, had a reputation for developing aspergillosis infections due to unsanitary conditions encountered when large numbers of wild-caught birds were being imported. As with any other psittacine, cleanliness of the cage or aviary is important for these birds.

Parrot babies are adorable, innocent hatchlings when feathered, although at first will look like a naked baby dinosaur of some sort. Depending on the parrot species and lifespan, each chick grows and weans at a different pace. Also depending on the species, they reach adulthood and sexual maturity at different ages. They all do possess natural breeding behaviors at sexual maturity - especially during the spring and summer months. Many of their personalities will change a little due to their hormones, but will calm down after the season. As they get older, this period of their lives become easier for them to handle, and you will notice much less of a difference from their usual self during those times. Habitat destruction and excessive capture of parrots in the wild, have now threatened many populations of parrots in their native habitats. Many measures have been enacted to stop the endangerment of these beautiful birds. The continued importation of parrots into the United States has been effectively halted by the Wild Bird Importation Act of 1992. International treaties have also limit the importation of wildlife. In many cases, captive breeding may be the only way to keep up parrot population levels, and there are many species of endangered parrots which you should never consider keeping if you are not planning to breed them.
