Mungo Park A beautifully sculpted statue of the explorer Mungo Park by Thomas Clapperton adorns one end of the High Street in Selkirk, and one of his friend, Sir Walter Scott adorns the other. Mungo Park was born at Foulshiels, near Selkirk, one of 14 children. He qualified as a doctor and firstly joined an expedition to Sumatra while still in his early twenties. Many expeditions followed and he died tragically whilst attempting to discover the source of the Niger. His botanical and geographical observations were invaluable at a time when little was known of the African interior. Park was a totally unpretentious individual much admired by Sir Walter Scott. In full: Scottish surgeon and explorer Mungo Park (1771-1806) went to Africa in 1795 to explore the Niger River. He went 200 miles up the Gambia River upon arriving in present-day Gambia and then traveled east into unexplored territory. Park was captured by a local chief but escaped and returned to Scotland. His good friend Sir Walter Scott convinced him to return to Africa to uncover the secret of the mouth of the Niger River. In 1796, Park reached the Niger River at the town of Segou. After he traveled 80 miles downstream as far as Silla his supplies were exhausted. On January 31, 1805, Park set sail from Portsmouth, England to Africa, planning to navigate the Niger River from Segou to its mouth. It was to be his last voyage. On August 9th, he reached the town of Bamako. Park reached the town of Sansanding, where he planned to build boats to journey down the Niger, on September 27. He became known as an expert on Egypt and Sudan chiefly through his two books, The Albert N'yanza, Great Basin of the Nile (1866) and The Nile Tributaries of Abyssinia (1867). He also wrote popular books on hunting and nature. Baker was born in London. During the late 1850's and early 1860's, he and Florence von Sass, whom he later married, explored the region of the White Nile, the Blue Nile, and the Atbara River in Africa. On March 14, 1864, Baker and his party found a great lake. The lake, which he named Albert Nyanza (now also called Lake Albert), lies between Uganda and Congo (Kinshasa) and is an important source of the Nile River. Baker was knighted in 1866. In 1869, Ismail Pasha, the ruler of Egypt, appointed him as governor general of Sudan, which was then controlled by Egypt. Ismail told Baker to eliminate the slave trade. Baker added new territory in Sudan for Egypt and defeated some prominent slave traders but failed to stop the slave trade. He returned to England in 1873.

In 1830, Richard Lemon Lander, a British explorer, sailed down the Niger to its mouth in the Gulf of Guinea.
