Welcome to Parenting on the Go , a web site for you, the busy, devoted parent!
This site presents the on-going work of Larry Tobin , educator, psychologist and nationally known speaker and author of books addressing issues of working and living with children. Parenting on the Go gives you quick access to parenting tips to help you be the best parent you can be. Contained on this website, you will find the suggestions you need in the middle of a busy day to move beyond family troubles toward a better parent/child relationship and more effective discipline. Each discussion is brief (time is not probably what you have a lot of) practical (parenting is a no nonsense business) and designed to be easily put into practice TODAY. Today, the Parenting on the Go web site is divided into seven sections with 6 to 10 concisely-written suggestions, and many include tips for "practicing" new techniques. Each section addresses a particular area of parenting concern. This site includes techniques that represent a comprehensive "training" for parents in the important skills of effective parenting and discipline. These techniques are available to you in "bite-size" packages ideal for the "parent on the go" the parent just needing a suggestion, but needing it right now before the situation(s) gets out of control.

Thumb Sucking

Here's a great tip to help break this unconscious nighttime habit:
  • My child sucks her thumb just at night, but it was beginning to affect her bite. So we came up with a clever way to help her stop. We put a spice on her thumb at night after she is asleep to help reduce her desire to put her thumb in her mouth. She gets one smell of the spice (pick one your child isn't too crazy about) on her thumb and avoids her thumb for hours. Its important to wait until she is asleep, and the whole process loses the power struggle aspect. So far its working great!

Parting with Pacifiers
Doctors universally agree pacifiers are a normal and recommended part of an infant's life. Parents often have to wrestle with separating toddlers and their beloved pacifiers. Here's a great tip to help with that transition:

    When Your Child Misbehaves
Your Child's Emotional Health Anger Management for Children Handling Temper Tantrums ... Links to Parenting Information When Your Child Misbehaves Every child misbehaves from time to time. When your child misbehaves, it's your job as a parent to respond to your child and to teach your child appropriate behavior
You can do this by keeping these guidelines in mind set clear rules be consistent use enforceable statements about what you will do address the child's need for attention use "time outs"
remove privileges Why Physical Punishment is NOT a Good Idea
Spanking or hitting may stop a child from misbehaving for awhile, but it doesn't teach the child about positive behavior. Instead, it teaches the child that it's OK to use violence to solve problems. It may also be considered abuse when it leads to injury. back to top of page

Campus Goes Online for Parenting Tips By D. Lyn Hunter, Public Affairs
Posted September 22, 1999 Need advice on your fourth grader's Pokemon addiction? Looking for a good deal on a breast pump? When buying a used Volvo, which year is best? In search of answers to questions like these, hundreds of campus parents turn to the UCB Parents mailing list, a volunteer-run e-mail newsletter for parents affiliated with Berkeley. Information on the list is divided into four categories announcements, marketplace, recommendations and advice. "Sleep is the number one topic that parents seek advice on," said Ginger Ogle, manager of the digital library project in computer sciences and founder of the list serve. "People have very strong opinions about the best way to get a child to sleep." A recent spate of advice in the list serve offered such divergent views as "babies and toddlers must learn to fall asleep on their own," to "we experimented with sleep aides, such as melatonin and tryptophan," to "we do a family bed, which is working very nicely for us."

    96. Parent Works - Parenting Tips

    http://www.parentworks.com.au/Parenting_tips.htm
    Improving your Child's Confidence
    1. Give lots of cuddles and kisses.
    2. Smile and talk to children from the earliest age.
    3. When your child starts to understand the meaning of things, be consistent, if you say you will do something at a certain time, do your best to make sure you will.
    4. Give praise for things that the child achieves; even from the earliest rolling over through to doing things such as cleaning teeth and even if they behave appropriately.
    5. Tell your child you love them, even when you feel they don't deserve it (and make it clear they are being punished for their bad behaviour NOT because they are a bad person).
    6. Don't nag; children hate it as much as adults do.
    7. Discipline young children by removing them from the situation. Use the opportunity to teach them what is correct behaviour and what is not. Hitting young children only demonstrates that it is all right to them to be violent.
    8. Explain to children that parents need time to discuss things too. Children often interrupt often because they think they won't remember when you finish your conversation, but also because they are yet to start considering others before themselves. As they grow older they will start to realise that they can remember things to tell you later and will interrupt less often.

Because Every Child Deserves A Good Beginning
    Steps for Good Beginnings
    Good Beginnings Alliance
The first five years of a child's life are extremely important. A child's experiences during these early years help shape the way a child will learn, think and behave for the rest of his or her life. We all want to raise our keiki to be healthy, happy and able to reach their fullest potential. To do this, parents and caregivers must give their children plenty of love, care and attention, as well as meet their basic health and safety needs. Activities such as playing, singing and reading help to develop a child's intelligence, self-esteem and desire to learn. Keiki who receive a great deal of warm loving care during their first five years have a greater chance of developing into happy people who perform well in school and get along with others. Everyone who cares for young children - parents, family, friends, teachers, child care providers - can help them reach their full potential. These tips are helpful for the healthy development of your keiki.
