Pantheism is not a belief. It is a perception and an attitude. A religious stance. There is no need to suspend disbelief in pantheism or to accept supernatural or metaphysical phenomenae. The position is actually very simple.
THE UNIVERSE IS DIVINE.
What is pantheism?
Pantheism is the philosophical position that the Universe or Being or Existence, Earth, Nature or Life (call it what you wish) is Divinity. There is no God external to the Universe as we know it, and the Universe itself (matter and energy) represents Divinity. However, what a pantheist means by Divinity may be something entirely different than the usual 'God' Concept...
For the Pantheist, 'God' is not a conscious, personal being as the theists think of him. Rather, the word Divinity rather is a metaphor of explaining our attitude of reverence, wonder, awe and love that we feel towards Life/Cosmos/Earth and because the Cosmos it it's own designer/creator and is self-organising and self-structuring. Does the Cosmos have feeling? No. But we as conscious human beings DO have feeling, and we can allow the beauty of Life enchant us and inspire us. So basically, Pantheism is a more spiritual, life-affirming approach to Life, compatible with Humanism, Paganism, Atheism and ecological concerns.

Modern Pantheism as an Approach to Environmental Ethics
by Harold W. Wood, Jr.*
ABSTRACT:
While philosophers debate the precise articulation of philosophical theory to achieve a desirable change in environmental attitudes, they may be neglecting the fountainhead of social change. Insofar as ordinary people am concerned, it is religion which is the greatest factor in determining morality. In order to achieve an enlightened environmental ethics, we need what can only be termed a "religious experience. " While not denying the efficacy of other religious persuasions, I explore the contribution of an informed modern Pantheism to environmental ethics. The conceptual division of the holy and the world is rectified by pantheism. As a form of "nature mysticism." pantheism promotes a theological basis for achieving oneness with God through knowledge, devotion. and works, all of which establish an enlightened theory for environmental ethics. A modern pantheism bears investigation by those advocating new ethical approaches toward the environment.
"This doctrine of pantheism is more than a mere theory. It has tremendous practical and ethical implications." - Henry Thomas and Dane Lee Thomas

A Response To "Scientific Pantheism"
by Gary Suttle
Paul Harrison writes with cogency and grace on many aspects of pantheism. I find much of his work illuminating and valuable, yet I dislike his coinage "scientific pantheism" and I question the meaning of the term and its value in spreading pantheism to a wider audience. The label "scientific pantheism" highlights the religion's "scientific approach to reality" (Pantheist Vision, Vol. 17, No. 4). But to me the term brings to mind people who try to validate their less-than-scientific activities by employing "science" in their name , e.g. "scientology, "creation science" and "scientific creationism." Pantheism needs no adjective tacked on to bolster its credibility. Pantheism perforce embraces the scientific method and the religion's increasing prominence stems in part from its perfect compatibility with the latest findings of science. The tag "scientific pantheism" also implies a superiority over other types of (unscientific?) pantheism. But I think the many forms of pantheism and related spiritualities that instill a reverence for Nature have their place (the Earth and non-human inhabitants need all the help they can get). Condescension, intended or not, is counterproductive. On another level, putting "scientific" in front of pantheism does a disservice to pantheism. Why? Because science and its handmaiden modern technology wreak havoc on the planet. Nuclear bombs and radiation poisoning, to name but one of thousands of banes, lead thoughtful persons to argue that modern science has done more harm than good. Certainly science plays an important role in our lives. But I think pantheism preceded science and exceeds science. Aligning the religion too closely with the good, the bad, and the ugly of science tarnishes the brilliance of pantheism.

Pantheist ( pan =all; theos =god) is a term coined in 1705 by John Toland for someone who believes that everything is God. On this basis in 1732, the Christian apologist Daniel Waterland used the noun "pantheism" for the first time, condemning the belief as "scandalously bad... scarce differing from... Atheism." Under pantheistic theory, only God exists and all that exists is God. There are various forms of pantheism, but the most common argues that the totality of reality - you, the computer, everything - is a part of God. Another common form is that simply the universe itself or perhaps the laws of nature are God. There are four named categories of pantheism in the literature: Theomonistic Pantheism : Only God exists and the independent existence of nature is denied - also referred to as acosmism (a-*cos-mism, or "no-world")

The universe as a totality and our wonder and awe at its existence, and the thrill of discovery = the Pantheist religious experience. At least that's how I understand it. Essentially the religion stresses the importance of reality and the laws of nature and not some supernatural "beyond." There is no Creator, except it be the "big bang" or something of that sort. Deism is similar but suggests a Creator which exists but which doesn't interfere. If I'm not mistaken it also holds that certain truths are innate and must be discovered through rational means. I would like to add Atheistic Mysticism to this class of religions which emphasize natural reality. (enlightenment = recognition of "undifferentiated reality") As far as agnosticism is concerned, I'd like to add my two bits. Agnosticism is the only truly defensible argument, of course, ... but it does not seem as practical, or as beneficial as any of the other "Reality" Gods of pantheism or deism. Agnosticism is more of a stopping place for discussion ... whereas S. Pantheism and Deism add poetic expression to our scientific discoveries.

When the discussion of Pantheism began on this Forum, it was emphasized that Frater Ralph M. Lewis, former Imperator, quoted from the philosophy of a Dutch philosopher, Baruch (Benedict) Spinoza. In fact Frater Lewis has made several references to Spinoza in many of his writings. The first citation was in Chapter V of his work 'Mental Alchemy, Is Consciousness Universal. The citations will not be repeated here. In that Chapter, Lewis discusses Mystical Pantheism. In his work, The Conscious Interlude in Chapter III, Inquiry Into Knowledge, he delves into some of the epistemology (theory of knowledge) which leads a student to Mystical Pantheism. And in 'Sanctuary of Self, Chapter IV Love and Desire he discusses the love of God, from a Pantheistic view point. All of these references are based on the thinking of Baruch Spinoza, and Frater Lewis recognizes this philosopher in each one of his works as the source material.

PANTHEISM
The semi-Oriental mysticism of the Neoplatonists and the Logos doctrines of the Stoics alike influence early Christian doctrine, and the pantheistic view i~ fopnd frequently in. medieval theology (e.g. in Erigena, Meister Eckhardt, Jakob Boehme). The Arabic scholar Averroes gave Aristotle to western Europe in a pantheistic garb, and thus influenced medieval scientists. So Bruno constructed a personified nature, and the scientific and humanistic era began. The pantheism of Spinoza, combining as it did the religious and the scientific points of view, had a wide influence upon thought and culture. Schelling (in his Identity-philosophy) and Hegel both carried on the pantheistic tradition, which after Hegel broke up into two lines of thought, the one pantheistic the other atheistic. From the religious point of view there are two main problems. The first is to establish any real relation between the individual and God without destroying personality and with it the whole idea of human responsibility and free will: the second is to explain the infinity of God without destroying his personality. In what sense can God be outside the world (see DEIsM): in what sense in it (pantheism)? The great objection to pantheism is that, thiugh ostensibly it magnifies the Creator and gets rid of the difficult dualism of Creator and Creation, it tends practically to deny his existence in any practical intelligible sense. This section of my site is devoted to many things that are difficult to define in words, which are nevertheless resumed in an attitude of awe, a religious feeling, some could say, before the complexity and beauty of the universe, which is everything that exists. Its name is taken from the verses of Otro poema de los dones ("Another poem of the gifts"), by Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges Thanks I want to give to the divine

that form this singular universe...

Although I don't believe in God , I can call the universe divine because it has all the attributes that believers acknowledge in their gods. The universe is all-powerful, because it can do everything that is possible. It's a creator: according to what modern cosmology tries to explain, it made itself, and galaxies, and stars, planets and us, life. We can say it's all-knowing, because everything that happens within it can be known by any other part, since even the tiniest particles influences all the rest. It's not all-loving, but it isn't evil either; in fact it has no feelings, because it's not a person, but it does arise feelings in us, self-conscious beings who observe it. Among some of us, its sheer existence (a miracle of, literally, cosmic proportions) produces an incomparable, inexhaustible awe, maybe what theologians call
