T he Panama Canal is located on the Isthmus of Panama in Central America. The canal is 80 kilometers (50 miles) long and serves as a passage for large ships between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In 1903, a treaty was signed by Panama and the United States that allowed the United States to undertake construction of an interoceanic ship canal across the Isthmus of Panama. The canal shortened the previous route, around Cape Horn at the tip of South America and through Drakes Passage, by 8,000 nautical miles. Construction took 10 years and involved feats of engineering that included the largest gates and canal locks ever built, and the largest Earth damn up to that time. Ancon was the first official ship to complete interoceanic passage through the Panama canal when it opened on August 15, 1914.

, the canal can be seen running diagonally from top right to lower left. The Atlantic side is at upper right, Pacific at lower left. From the Atlantic, the canal is entered via the Caribbean Sea and exists into the Pacific via the Gulf of Panama. The city of Colon is on the Atlantic side of the canal, Panama (obscured by clouds) on the Pacific side.

(117k JPEG) T he canal consists of Gatun Lake (a central man-made lake that runs most of the distance across the Isthmus of Panama) and a 13 kilometer (8.5 miles) section known as Gaillard Cut. The Cut is located on the Continental Divide where primary excavation of the canal (carving through rock and shale) was required. Three series of huge locks are used to raise and lower ships, one on the Atlantic side and two on the Pacific side. The Miraflores locks (on the Pacific side) are the largest lock system in the world. A ship is raised 26 meters (85 feet) above sea level and then lowered again during its 8-10 hour passage through the canal.

PANAMA'S ADVENTURES One of the main characteristics of Panama's geography, besides its abundant green areas, are its tropical jungles traversed by extensive rivers with their abrupt trajectories. In some of them that run towards the Pacific and the Caribbean there are appropriate scenarios for river rafting. If once you dreamt of doing it, this is the best moment to experience it in Panama. Panama has a wide range of rapids classes. We have class III rapids in the Chagres River and class IV rapids in Mamoni River, and in Chiriqui province you can practice safe river rafting, all year long in two natural scenarios: Chiriqui River, a class III, IV and V!! river, available all year long, affording a real challenge during the months from April to December. Tour Operator in Panama provide everything that is necessary to enjoy this adventure, and help you find in these deep rivers the degrees of difficulty that visitors demand. The same is true of the opportunity to practice this exciting adventure thanks to the extensive trajectory of the river and certain demanding stretches where you can experience the greatest challenge of your life with nature. Here are some pictures of our rivers, courtesy of

Panama Introduction Geography People Government ... Transnational Issues Panama Introduction Top of Page Background: With US backing, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903 and promptly signed a treaty with the US allowing for the construction of a canal and US sovereignty over a strip of land on either side of the structure (the Panama Canal Zone). The Panama Canal was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914. On 7 September 1977, an agreement was signed for the complete transfer of the Canal from the US to Panama by the end of 1999. Certain portions of the Zone and increasing responsibility over the Canal were turned over in the intervening years. With US help, dictator Manuel NORIEGA was deposed in 1989. The entire Panama Canal, the area supporting the Canal, and remaining US military bases were turned over to Panama by or on 31 December 1999. For a discussion of the question, "Did geography give Eurasia an advantage?" click here Overview: The Waves of History World history is the story of human experience. The story begins in east Africa where human life began and spread over the earth and recently into outer space. Humans migrated from Africa to the neighboring continents of Asia and Europe, then to Australia and finally to the Americas. Human life developed through a series of waves that swept over the world beginning with those early humans who left Africa. Another wave was agriculture, which spread from the Middle East during the late Stone Age. No longer were humans constantly on the move searching for food. People could settle in one place, build cities and make inventions such as the plow, wheel, pottery and writing. This resulted in civilization, a third wave of human history. A fourth wave was industrialization, which began in Europe during modern times when people discovered new sources of energy that did not depend on muscles, wind or water.
