Culture
Panama's arts reflect its ethnic mix. Indian tribes, West Indian groups, mestizos, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Swiss, Yugoslav and North American immigrants have all contributed ingredients to the cultural stew. Traditional arts include wood carving, weaving, ceramics and maskmaking. Spanish is the official language, though US influence and the international nature of the canal zone reinforce the use of English as a second language. West Indian immigrants also speak Caribbean-accented English. Indian tribes have retained their own languages. Panama is predominantly Roman Catholic, but there are sizable Muslim and Protestant minorities and small numbers of Hindus and Jews.

FOLKLORE AND CULTURE There are six different Indians Cultures in Panama and each one of them practices its very own typical ancestral customs. Each province of Panama has a varied Folklore reflected through its dances, music and cuisine. In the deeply catholic provinces of Cocle, Herrera and Los Santos churches are found on the main town square (Plaza) as was the Spanish tradition. Nata, one of the oldest colonial cities, boasts the oldest church of the American Continent. One of the yearly festive highlights is Carnival, celebrated throughout the country in the month of February.

Brief information of geography, economy, government, and culture.

April 10, 2003 2:27 PM Geography and Climate
Panama's tropical environment supports a large variety of flora and fauna. While the forests dominate the landscape, they are interrupted in places by grasslands, scrub, and crops. Among Panama's natural resources are copper, mahogany forests, shrimp, sugar cane, rice, coconuts, and tomatoes.
Panama has a tropical climate with temperatures ranging between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. While there is little seasonal variation, the two main seasons are the dry season which runs from January through March and the rainy season from April through December. Although thunderstorms are common during the rainy season, the country is outside the hurricane track.
    Economy and Government
The Panama Canal is a major focus of business activity and contributes about 5 percent to the nation's income. Owned and operated by the United States since 1914, the canal became the sole property of Panama in December 1999. A public Panamanian corporation operates the canal. U.S. military forces based around the canal departed, and many of the former military bases are likely be converted to business or public use.
Mining, tourism, petroleum refining, brewing, sugar milling, and maritime services are projected sources for future growth.

    Panama - Culture Overview
Such applied arts as woodcarving, pottery, and textiles command the most acclaim in modern Panamanian culture. The Kuna of San Blas are famed for the mola, a multilayered, hand-stitched appliqué textile made by Kuna women. Panama's national costume is the pollera, an intricate lace dress made in the Peninsula de Azuero. Masks made in this Pacific region are considered esteemed works of art as well. Music and dance are also vital areas of the arts in Panama, and in Panama City the Teatro Nacional and Teatro la Cu'pula present an array of events. Some hotels in the city offer performances of traditional dance as well.
