Pacific News Member of Culture Gallery Introduction ANGLONESIA Anglonesia is a neologism used here to refer to Australia New Zealand and the United States in the Pacific (ANZUS). The progress from colonialism to independence in the Pacific Islands region (both north and south of the equator) has not brought an end to the influence of the former colonial powers. Presently, there are ten territories or dependencies linked directly to an extraregional government, and five others are constrained in their foreign policies by the terms of their free associaton compacts. Like these territories, the independent states are also affected by the political, security and economic policies of the extraregional powers. There continues to be an overlap of interests between outsiders and islanders, which is likely to persist even as more island stated begin to exert their influence more and more within the region as well as globally. History
It's thought that the first inhabitants of Palau came from eastern Indonesia. Carbon dating of ancient habitation sites shows that the Rock Islands were settled by at least 1000 BC. These early Palauans developed fairly complex matrilineal and matriarchal social systems, wherein money and property were inherited by women though owned by the clan. The first European to sight Palau was probably Ruy Lopez de Villalobos of Spain in 1543. Spain claimed the islands in 1686 but did nothing to develop or colonize them. It wasn't until 1783, when English captain Henry Wilson shipwrecked on a reef off Palau's Ulong Island, that any significant contact between Palauans and Westerners began. Wilson was aided by Koror's chief, Ibedul, who helped rebuild the ship and then sent his son, Prince Lebuu, back with the sailors to be educated in England. Although Lebuu died of smallpox shortly after arriving in London, his presence there touched many Britons and piqued their interest in Palau. The country soon became Palau's main trading partner and remained so for over 100 years, until the Spanish returned and expelled them in 1885. Spanish missionaries introduced Christianity and a written alphabet to Palau before Spain sold the country to Germany in the wake of the Spanish-American War. Germany took control in 1899 and immediate set about curtailing the devastating effects of Western diseases on the local populace. They then forced the Palauans into servitude while setting up coconut plantations and other business ventures.

He is now Industrial Arts, Science and Physical Education teacher at that same institution whose name has been changed to the Bequia Community High School. Belmar recently undertook an expedition, which carried him almost around the world. He returned home from Palau in the Pacific via Manila, Los Angeles, New York, San Juan, Canouan, back to Barbados before arriving at the E.T. Joshua airport. Belmar was taking part in a UNESCO sponsored Inter-regional conference. This was through a Small Islands Voice Youth Forum. Belmar is hoping to get other schools linked up to the programme in areas of sustainable development. By 2004 the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States is scheduled to be reviewed. Belmar's attendance at Palau went some way to broadening St. Vincent and the Grenadines' participation in this exercise.

http://www.pbs.org/edens/palau/p_legends.htm
Legends of Palau Author Nancy Barbour has spent the last 12 years traveling and writing about Palau. Part of that time was spent researching not only Palau's unique coral reefs and marine life, but also the culture and history of the Palauan people. Intrigued by the nation's rich cultural traditions, Barbour focused her attentions on the Palauans' ancient art of storytelling which reveals the complexities of their society and strong sense of familial ties. Oral traditions, passed down through the form of chants, stories, dances, and legends, have kept Palau's history alive. The following excerpts and legends are taken from Barbour's book, Palau . It is her ultimate hope that her book will contribute to an appreciation of Palau and its people, and that, as a result, it will help ensure that Palau remains the unspoiled natural wonder it is today. Culture
An Excerpt from the book, Palau , by Nancy Barbour.
Check back soon for ordering information. Though the origin of the Palauan people is shrouded in folklore and legend, the most accepted theory, based on linguistic similarities, holds that the islands were settled thousands of years ago by people migrating from Southeast Asia and Indonesia people who thought nothing of sailing hundreds of miles across uncharted seas in open outrigger canoes. The early Palauans were perhaps once gifted navigators, but when they got to Palau they stayed. With an abundance of food from the fertile land and surrounding reef, there was no need to explore beyond the their shores. Long distance navigation skills diminished. Instead, the men became great fishermen and new more about the seasonal rhythms and life cycles of fish than is known by Western scientists today. While the sea was essentially the men's domain, farming the land was where the women excelled, primarily growing taro, a staple food with tuberous roots that are cooked in a variety of ways. The labor of the women guaranteed an adequate supply of food year round and thus gave them high social and political importance in the community.

http://www.northbeachcottages.com/palau.html
About Palau Rates Activities Contact Us ... Home HISTORY As for the date of their arrivals, carbon dating of artifacts from the oldest known village sites on the Rock Islands and the spectacular terraces on Babeldaob place civilization there as early as 1,000 BC. From that time onward, many foreign explorers called on Palau, and the islands were exposed to further European contact. In 1922, Koror became the administrative center for all Japanese possessions in the South Pacific. The town of Koror was a stylish metropolis with factories, shops, public baths, restaurants and pharmacies. This finally came about on October 1, 1994, when Palau gained its independence upon the signing of the Compact of Free Association with the United States. GEOGRAPHY Located between Guam, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea, Palau is a more than 400 mile long archipelago that gives home to one of the world's unique phenomena, the Rock Islands. This collection of mushroom shaped islets are largely uninhabited and are located in a large lagoon that harbors one of the greatest concentrations of corals in the World. Not surprisingly, Palau has been named the No. 1 Underwater Wonders of the World. However, the protected lagoon and astounding diversity of this area has also given rise to other activities in recent years namely sea kayaking, para-sailing and sports fishing.
