Convocation: Frohnmayer urges involvement to map UO's course in trying time.
by Gaye Vandermyn To thrive in the current season of adversity, President Dave Frohnmayer last Friday called on members of the UO community to remember who we are, why we are here and what our mission is. "I am proud to be President of the University of Oregon," Frohnmayer told those gathered for the 2002 Convocation at Beall Concert Hall. "I am proud to be working with each of you to strengthen our universitya proud exemplar along with parliament and the church of this civilization's last surviving medieval institutions and in the case of the university, truly our most revolutionary modern one. I am determined, then, to carry on the mission that this university has delivered for the past 126 years. "We have a responsibility to our state to maintain the quality education that will prepare this generation and future ones for the ever-shifting... challenges that inevitably lie ahead. To do this, we also must address the great challenge of accessibility. If Oregon students cannot afford to attend the University of Oregon, it has in one sense ceased to be the University of Oregon. We cannot allow that to happen. "We have a responsibility to our state to maintain the quality education that will prepare this generation and future ones for the ever-shifting... challenges that inevitably lie ahead."

Quickwork Task Force Members: Sharlene Walker, Don Prickel, Laura Roach, Doris Johnson, George Miller, Bill McCaughan
The following information pertains to the activities underway as a result of re-organization of this committee and the Council's redefining of goals and outcomes.
I) Notes from Quickwork Task Force Meeting: August 7, 2001 The Quickwork Task Force met with Terri Johanson to assess the needed steps in the efforts to develop a strategic plan for distance education for statewide ABE/GED/ESL programs. This meeting was held to meet one of the recommendations set in the Summer OCABSD meeting: Strategic Plan Development. After some in-depth discussion on technology issues, the lack of representation of ABE/GED/ESL programs with distance education efforts of most community colleges, and the need for a strategic plan, the following actions were recommended: 1) Terri recommends that each program director meet and develop a connected relationship with the following representatives:
  • the distance learning representative/director/coordinator
  • the media representative/director/coordinator
  • the tech representative/director/coordinator The Distrubuted Education Committee (Distance Education) needs to design a set of questions for the directors to be used in interviewing the above key persons on the campuses of each college. Directors or their representatives need to find out what activities are occurring and be represented at any meetings called by these persons.
