http://imto.humnet.unipi.it/khor_rori.html
Since 1997 a Mission from the University of Pisa
The main goal of the expedition, directed by Alessandra Avanzini, is the study of the history of the region of Khor Rori and the systematic excavation of the ancient port of Sumhuram. The port of Sumhuram (1st century BC - 4th AD) represents without any doubt the most important pre-Islamic settlement in the Dhofar region; founded by the Hadramawt king it is almost certainly that same cited by the anonymous author of the Periplus Maris Erythraei . The city looks out over the Indian Ocean and is near to a region which produced some of the best incense in ancient times and it was also the easternmost outpost of the Hadramawt kingdom on the trade route between the Mediterranean and India.
That in fact this was an important and wealthy settlement is clear in the first place from the structure of the city. Sumhuram in its monumental phase was a small fortified city, with a tri-partite city gate, an imposing building (probably a palace), storehouses and multi-floored houses. The passage through the city gate is marked by a series of monumental inscriptions which refer to the foundation of the city. The objects found during the excavation, especially the metals and coins, confirm its economic importance.

For Middle East, North Africa, Arab and regional information visit Arab Countries Oman , officially Sultanate of Oman, formerly Muscat and Oman, independent sultanate (1995 est. pop. 2,125,000), c.82,000 sq mi (212,380 sq km), SE Arabian peninsula, bounded by the Gulf of Oman (E), the Arabian Sea (S), Yemen and Saudi Arabia (W), and the United Arab Emirates (N), which separate the main portion of the country from an exclave that juts into the Strait of Hormuz. The capital is Muscat. Oman comprises a coastal plain and an interior region of hills and desert. Dates, limes, nuts, and vegetables are cultivated in the north and livestock are raised in the southwest, but the major product is oil. Natural gas production and copper mining were developed in the early 1980s to diversify the economy. The population is predominantly Muslim Arab, with Pakistani, Indian, and Zanzibari minorities. History
Occupied by Portugal in 1508 and Turkey in 1659, Oman came under Ahmad ibn Said of Yemen, founder of the present royal line, in 1741. It has had close ties with Britain since the 19th cent. In 1965 the United Nations called for the elimination of British influence in Oman.
In 1970, Sultan Said ibn Timer was deposed by his son, Qabus bin Said, who promised to use oil revenues for modernization. Rebel activity continued, however, particularly in Dhofar, in the south, where a Chinese-aided liberation front was strong. Oman joined the United Nations and the Arab League in 1971, but it did not become part of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Geography and Climate Oman borders Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in the West; the Republic of Yemen in the South; the Strait of Hormuz in the North and the Arabian Sea in the East. The total land area of Oman is approximately 309,500km2 and it is the third largest country in the Arabian Peninsula. Topography an has a variety of topographical features consisting of plains, wadis and mountains. The most important area is the coastal plain, which represents about 3% of the total land area. The mountain ranges occupy about 15%. The Hajar range runs from Musandam in the North to Ras al-Hadd, the extreme limit of the Arabian Peninsula. In the South, the Qara range attracts the monsoon, which brings unique weather conditions and creates a special environment in Dhofar. The remaining area, which occupies 82% of the country, is mainly sand and gravel desert and includes part of the Empty Quarter. Climate The climate differs from one area to another. It is hot and humid in the coastal areas in summer; while it is hot and dry in the Interior with the exception of the higher mountains, which enjoy a moderate climate throughout the year. Rainfall is generally light and irregular; although heavy rain and thunderstorms can cause severe flooding. In the south, the Dhofar region, a moderate climate and a pattern of rainfall is more predictable with heavy monsoon rains occurring regularly between May and September thus transforming this part of Arabia into an oasis of green slopes and mountains peaks that are covered with clouds.

    http://www.salamiran.org/IranInfo/General/Geography/

    Location
Iran is situated in south-western Asia and borders the three CIS states, the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the Republic of Turkmenistan, as well as the Caspian Seas to the north, Turkey and Iraq to the west, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to the south and Pakistan and Afghanistan to the east.
    LANDSCAPE
A series of massive, heavily eroded mountain ranges surround Iran's high interior basin. Most of the country is above 1,500 feet, one-sixth of it over 6,500 high. In sharp contrast are the coastal regions outside the mountain ring. In the north, the 400-mile strip along the Caspian Sea, never more than 70 miles wide and frequently narrowing to 10, falls sharply from the 10,000-foot summit to 90 feet below sea level. In the south, the land drops away from a 2,000 foot plateau, backed by a rugged escarpment three times as high, to meet the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
Mountains The Zagros range stretches from the border with the Republic of Armenia in the north-west to the Persian Gulf, and then eastward into Baluchistan. As it moves southward, it broadens into a 125-mile-wide band of parallel, alternating mountains lying between the plains of Mesopotamia and the great central plateau of Iran. It is drained on the west by streams that cut deep, narrow gorges and water fertile valleys. The land is extremely hard, difficult to access, and populated largely by pastoral nomads.

Glimpses of the Historical Geography of the Al Ain Region, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
by Abdullah Hussain Dawood What most impresses hundreds of visitors to the Eastern Province of Abu Dhabi State (Al Ain town and neighboring villages) is the wonderful state of preservation of its old forts, buildings and monuments. Within the region of Buraimi, they find an example of a city that has grown naturally and harmoniously. Since 6 th August 1966, when His Highness Shaikh Zaid bin Sultan al Nahayyan became the Ruler of the State, indeed life in the region has changed considerably, but certain buildings of architectural and historical importance have been preserved and carefully restored. Old houses and unimportant buildings have been replaced by new ones tastefully designed to harmonize with their surroundings. Thus the visitor today finds a city and villages of unique charm which, due to their fertile land and abundance of water supply, are well known for their agricultural potential. Turning from the recent scene, an attempt now follows to piece together the scattered information found in the Arab authors and other relevant sources on the general geography of the region down to the sixteenth century.
