Our Mission has conducted research and cultural management projects in cooperation with the Sultanate's Ministry of National Heritage and Culture since 1977. In different ways, and owing to an interdisciplinary approach, the Mission has illuminated the prehistory of this Arabian land. Originally the emphasis centred on localising the copper land Magan/Makkan which is known from cuneiform texts.
The Mission is sponsored by the German Mining Museum and the Institute for Prehistory of the University of Heidelberg. Fieldwork in the Sultanate of Oman:
1977 Survey smelting sites in the Wadi Jizi and Sharqiyah
1978 Excavation and survey Arja and Lasail
1979-80 Survey and excavation principally al Maysar M 1

Business Attire GREETINGS AND COURTESIES English is the primary business language, although Arabic is the official language of the country. Omanis hold titles in high regard. Always use professional titles like doctor or professor. If you are a Ph.D., be sure to have it printed on your business card; it may help sway your Omani counterparts. Until recently, Omanis weren't allowed higher education; consequently, in many cases, an Omani will respect a degree more than an individual's competence. BUSINESS ETHIC AND FRAMEWORK One of the most modern of the Gulf countries, Oman is considered more tolerant of Western culture than are many other Arab countries. Omanis are very honest in their business dealings, and expect foreigners to be the same. Personal relationships dictate business transactions. DECISION MAKING Generally one decisionmaker exists in a company. Always make prior appointments for business meetings, and foreigners should arrive on time. However, one may encounter others to have an appointment at the same time. Expect continuous interruptions by family, friends, and business associates, as well as by frequent telephone calls and servings of coffee, tea, or another beverage, which one should not decline to uphold politeness. Omanis place great importance on polite gestures and do not respond well to overly frank words. Once the business discussion has begun, however, it will proceed in a relatively straightforward manner, unless it occurs during prayer time, when a host may halt proceedings to pray.

Address
by the President of the International Music Council, Kifah Fakhouri,
on the occasion of the awarding of the
2002 IMC-UNESCO International Music Prize
Aachen, November 9th 2002 Your Honour, Mr. Lord Mayor of Aachen, Dr. Jurgen Linden; Your Excellency, the Under Secretary of the Omani Ministry of Information, Mr. Abdullah Al-Hosni; Your Excellencies, Ambassador of Portugal to Germany and Ambassador of Portugal to UNESCO; Your Excellencies, Ambassador of Oman to Germany and Ambassador of Oman to UNESCO; Honourable Representative of the UNESCO Director-General, Madam Milagros del Corral; Distinguished Representatives of the German National Commission for UNESCO; Your Excellency, the President of the German Music Council, Mr. Franz Meuller Heuser; Most commendable laureates of the International Music Council - UNESCO Music Prize, Madam Maria Joao Pires and distinguished representative of the Oman Centre for Traditional Music, Mr. Khalfan al-Birwani; Ladies, Gentlemen, Friends and Colleagues, It gives me a great honour to participate with you in the ceremony of this exceptional event, the award of the 2002 IMC-UNESCO International Music Prize. According to the statutes of the International Music Council, this Prize, which we initiated in 1975 in cooperation with UNESCO, aims to reward outstanding musicians and institutions for their life accomplishments in the field of music and to recognize their contributions to humanity and peace. Before introducing this year's laureates, allow me to pay tribute to the memory of Guy Huot, Secretary-General of the International Music Council, who departed this world last June and who had been instrumental in giving the IMC-UNESCO International Music Prize the important place it occupies today among the major international awards in the field of music. With Guy Huot, the International Music Council has lost its consummate diplomat and masterful cultural politician. For those of us who worked with Guy since he was appointed Secretary-General in 1987, his death is an irreparable loss. His versatility defined the requirements for his position: a refined linguist with a flair for literature; musician at heart and music journalist; superlative arts administrator; brilliant intellect masked by understatement; and all of the above subsumed under an overriding humanity.

Archaeologists have found some of the earliest sites in offshore islands like Merwah and Ghagha. Remains of small fishing communities have been found at the Ajman, Sharjah, Umm al Qaiwain, Jazirat Al Hamra and Islands of Dalma. Settlements in Jumeirah explains trading activity during period prior to Islamic era. With unmatched expertise in maritime activities people of emirates traveled to different parts of the world. According to Portugese writer Duart Barbarosa the people of Julfar were persons of worth, great navigators and traders. Portuguese navigators took tips from UAE navigators like Ahmed bin Majid regarding trade routes and winds of Indian ocean. Voyages of Vasco De Gama around the cape of Good hope in1498 spurred Gulf’s importance in the world trade. Rivalries in the Western World also reflected on the trade scene. When Europeans struggled for supremacy a new power grew almost unnoticed in emirates, the state of Qawasim or Qassimis whose descendants still rule the the emirate of sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah.

Lonely Planet Lonely Planet guide to Oman and the world Order Now
Oman Culture Arabic is the official language of Oman, though English is widely spoken in business circles. In the northern coastal areas you can find traders and sailors and a large number of expatriates from the Indian subcontinent who also speak Farsi and Urdu. Most Omanis are Ibadi Muslims, belonging to one of Islam's earliest fundamentalist movements. The Ibadi are distinguished by their conservative doctrine and their system of hereditary rule. Despite the modern appearance of much of Oman, the country remains intensely traditional. In the countryside hamlets and coastal villages, day-to-day life has changed little in centuries. Men can frequently be seen sporting bright blue, loose-fitting, floor-length shirt-dresses called dishdashas , often with a curved khanjar knife dangling from the waist. Women's dress is far more colourful than the simple black cloaks common in much of the rest of the Gulf region. Bright printed dresses are wrapped with even more colourful shawls and veils. Oman has devoted a great deal of effort to preserving its traditional arts, dance and music, though you're more likely to see traditional dancing staged in a museum than spontaneously breaking out in a village street. Oman is particularly known for its curved, silver-sheathed khanjar knives and silver jewellery.

Omanis are justly proud of their heritage and history, which goes back thousands of years. In order to safeguard this precious birthright and the long established traditions of Omani society, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos directed that a Ministry of National Heritage and Culture be established in 1976. In preparation for the Silver Jubilee, 1994 was declared the Year of National Heritage. Major plans and programmes were initiated to celebrate the occasion. With the cooperation of the public, the Ministry of National Heritage has gathered together no less than 4,300 valuable documents over the years. In 1994, a Manuscripts Competition was held, with prizes being awarded to the three Wilayats submitting the best collection of documents and in 1995, a further 75 came to light. A centre has been established for storing and researching these papers. Omani staff are have been trained to microfilm and to carry out restoration work on them. There is also an Islamic Library containing a wide range of religious works.

    Welcome to Sultanate of Oman
The Sultanate of Oman is located on the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula and has an area of approximately 309,500km It is bordered on the west by Saudi Arabia, to the northwest lie the United Arab Emirates and to the southwest is Yemen. The east coast meets with the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman. The capital of Oman is Muscat , a cosmopolitan, but relaxed city, free from the hustle and bustle found in many of Arabia's other capital cities. In the south of the Sultanate, is Salalah , the administrative capital of the Dhofar region. The climate in Muscat is markedly different to that in Dhofar: during the winter, Muscat enjoys temperatures of, average, 30C, dropping to around 18 C at night. However, in the summer, Muscat bakes in 45-48 C, while Dhofar cools down in the light monsoon rain.
Oman is a surprisingly green country, particularly in Dhofar, due to its location on the monsoon paths. Landscaping and beautification are priorities of the Municipalities, and gardens, parks and grassy knolls line the main highway. The countryside is varied, from rugged mountain ranges to desert sands, to green, lush wadis (riverbeds).
