About Canada: Northwest Territories
The Land
The Northwest Territories (NWT) lie north of the 60th parallel, above Saskatchewan, Alberta, and eastern British Columbia, and between the Yukon and Nunavut. These dimensions represent a recent change. With the creation of Nunavut on April 1, 1999, the area of the former Northwest Territories, which stretched from the Yukon east to Baffin Island and included all of the Arctic archipelago, was reduced by approximately two-thirds, from 3 426 320 km2 to 1 171 918 km2. This is not the first time that the Northwest Territories has undergone dramatic boundary changes. At one point or another during the NWT's history, it has included all of Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Yukon and most of Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. Like the Yukon, the Northwest Territories can be divided into two broad geographical regions: the taiga, a boreal forest belt that circles the subarctic zone; and the tundra, a rocky Arctic region where the cold climate has stunted vegetation. Remarkable features include the Great Bear Lake, which at 31 328 km2 is the eighth largest in the world; the Great Slave Lake, the tenth largest in the world at 28 568 km2; and the Mackenzie River (Canada's longest), which flows 4 241 kilometres from the Great Slave Lake to the Beaufort Sea. The History
The ancestors of the Dene Indian people lived along the Mackenzie Valley in the NWT 10 000 years ago. The first Inuit people are believed to have crossed the Bering Strait about 5 000 years ago, spreading east along the Arctic coast.

CULTURE
Language is the vehicle of culture. The way culture is shared and passed on to the young is deeply interwoven with ideas expressed in language. With each passing year, Yukon aboriginal people have become more aware that their languages are disappearing. Although Yukon native people have only known 150 years of contact with the English-Canadian culture, aboriginal languages are in danger of being lost. In recent years, native communities have shown that by keeping their language and culture alive and active, they can strengthen and unite their communities. In this way, language is connected to their economic and social well-being. In the Yukon, there are eight different language groups of which seven are Athapaskan. The other group is Tlingit. Vuntut Gwitchin
The Gwitchin have been known by many names including Crow River (Vunta) Kutchin and Loucheaux, a name given to them by French fur traders. Their "home" river has always been the Crow which flows into the Porcupine and into the Yukon River.

Few things symbolize the North, and capture the imagination of people everywhere, like the Northern Lights or aurora borealis . Robert Service immortalized them in "The Cremation of Sam Magee" and numerous novels have had them featured on their respective cover pages. Scientists may comment on "the Lights" being collections of electrically charged gases, but to you and me they seem so alive and the colours so vibrant, well... you can just feel them as they dance across the Northern skies! This particular graphic depicts the Northern Lights as seen over Yellowknife's Back Bay looking towards Giant Mine. The following two links provide excellent examples of the Northern Lights dancing across the winter skies. These two links are provided by Martti Rikkonen from his Virtual Finland photos and website:

Aurora Borealis The Concept of Culture Areas The notion of a "culture area" has its origins within the related fields of human ecology and cultural anthropology (Bohannan and Glazer, 1988; Kroeber, 1952). Indeed, it was American anthropologist Alfred Kroeber (1939) who, in his

Archive of Press Releases Department of Education, Culture and Employment of Northwest Territories and Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation sign agreement Yellowknife, July 13, 1999 - The Department of Education, Culture and Employment and the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation have signed an agreement that will enable students in the Northwest Territories to access awards from the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation. These awards will total $4.3 million over the next 10 years. In 1998, the federal government announced the establishment of the Canada Millennium Scholarship fund. The fund was established to assist and encourage students enrolled in post-secondary studies. In the Northwest Territories, students who are enrolled in full time post-secondary studies in the 1999-2000 academic year will be the first group eligible to receive these awards. There are two main categories of scholarships that will be awarded. Under the General Awards category, which is based on financial need and academic merit, 133 awards will be issued. Under the exceptional merit category, which factors in leadership, academic excellence and community service, there will be 5 awards determined at the community level and 2 awards at the territorial level. The names of the recipients of the territorial level awards will be forwarded to the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation for the award of a national level scholarship. All scholarships awarded will be $3000 each.
