British Columbia Imagine a vast land of more than a million squaremiles, fully one-third of Canada, located at the top of the world-a land of bracing blue waters, clear air and warm, welcoming people. Welcome to one of the last great frontiers: Canada's Northwest Territories. Leave your cares at home. Here's a place where you really can get away from it all! And it's fairly easy to travel to the Northwest Territories, with convenient jet airline transportation from major cities. From May through July, this is the Land of the Midnight Sun. Twenty-four hours of daylight, in which to enjoy all that there is to see and do in the Arctic. Experience the wildrivers and the tundra where no trees grow, go fishing for giant trout, see great herds of caribou on their constant migration. Or spot muskoxen and polar bears in the wild. Where else but the NWT can you play golf at midnight in broad daylight on a course consisting entirely of sand, far above the tree line? The entire population of the Northwest Territories is only 64,000, or enough to easily fit into an average size baseball stadium. One third of the residents live in the capital city of Yellowknife, with the rest living in a few small villages. The Dene and the Inuits create exquisite artwork and crafts using ancient skills likestone carving, caribou tufting and quill work. The Northwest Territories truly represent a land and culture worth exploring.

Whatever the changes in the weapon system, the new point styles were rapidly adopted across the Plains and adjacent regions. These changes in point form took place shortly before 10,000 B.P., a time when the spruce forests were being replaced by grasslands with an intervening parkland belt (Epp and Dyck : 66; J. Ritchie

Above these is a Period III Middle Plains culture point. The bison vertebra with the iron arrowhead lodged in it illustrates the continuity of bison hunting on the Plains. All of the chipped stone specimens are plastic replicas of the original southern Saskatchewan specimens residing in the Royal Ontario Museum. Such replicas are useful in research as well as exhibits vulnerable to damage. Except for weight, the replicas are indistinguishable from the originals. The points were all manufactured from North Dakota Knife River chalcedony.

The Canadian Plains represent the northern portion of the Central Plains of North America and the northern Plano culture bands participated in the cultural developments of this extensive region. It is therefore possible to draw upon a substantial body of information from the northern Plains of the United States. There is evidence that the spread of some elements of early Plano culture into the Plains of Canada was from the south. This is seen in the abundance to tools manufactured from distinctive stone varieties whose geological sources are to the south (Ebell

License Plate When the Northwest Territories was formed in 1870 it made up about 2/3 of Canada - almost twice of what it does now. Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Yukon Territories were all created from its land. Latest April 1, 1999 the remaining but still huge region was cut in half, the eastern part becoming "Nunavut" (means "our land" in Inuktitut - the inuit language). Territorial seal Two major climate zones divide the Northwest Territories, the Arctic and the sub-Arctic. The sub-Arctic climate has cold winters and relatively warm, but short, summers.Temperatures fall below degrees Celsius seven months of the year. In the Arctic, the average daily temperature of the warmest month of the year does not exceed 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 Celsius) meaning it has no so called true summers. And that is why trees can not survive there (check out treeline and tundra for more on this subject!)

This steep rounded rock rises 1200 feet over the water. Watch carefully and you may see falcons nesting on the ledges of this rock. Many of the residents of Wrigley live in log cabins. Some have adjoing teepees where families still dry and store traditional foods of the Dene and Slavey people. Most of the Dene and Slavey people who reside at Wrigley carry on their traditional livelihoods of hunting, fishing and trapping.
