Families and Communities in Africa - Expand
Families and communities are important aspects of cultures and societies. They come in many different shapes and sizes throughout the continent of Africa, so there is no one pattern to describe them. As you know in your own experiences, even next door neighbors can have very different family situations. To illustrate the diversity of family and community life in Africa, two examples have been selected below. You will find that some things about the families and communities in the stories may seem very similar to your own society and personal life. Other things may seem very different. Read the story that goes with each picture below and answer the questions that follow. Story #1:
Zainebu is the oldest child in her family. She has three younger brothers and one younger sister. Zainebu is 12 years old and in her sixth year of primary school. She lives in a town in Niger where most people speak a language called Hausa.

Languages in Africa - Explore
Important aspects of cultures are the languages that people speak. In this activity, two different maps are used to show the African languages and colonial languages that are spoken in Africa. Language is an important part of culture. It is connected to, and inseparable from, the ways people think and view the world. Language is the way a group of people communicates representations of the world around them. These representations and the ways they are communicated vary from group to group, thus forming different languages. Language is also changing all the time-even today! As we explore the history and relationships of languages in these two maps, this will become more evident. On the attached maps, you will see that many languages are spoken in Africa. Each of these languages is spoken by groups of people who number anywhere from less that 100,000 (Nama in Namibia) to as many as 50 million (Hausa in Nigeria and Niger). Regardless of the size of the group speaking the language, each language provides a mechanism through which beliefs and values are transmitted in conversations, songs, poems, stories, history and religious beliefs and practices.

What is CRWRC doing in Senegal? Senegal is one of the countries of the sahel, a band of increasingly arid land stretching across the continent of Africa from west to east. A 20-year long civil war in the southern half of Senegal takes a constant toll in civilian lives due to violent clashes and land-mine explosions. The country has the second highest number of people living with AIDS in the sub-region, and the third-highest rate in the sub-region among young women ages 15-24. Struggling with a weak resource base and a growing population of which less than one-fifth of school-age children are in school, Senegal was classified in 2001 by the World Bank as one of 49 "least developed countries" in the world.

SAHARAN DREAM
DreamWeaver Travel Company
Click here for info Turbaned men late at night around a bed of coals, telling age-old jokes to muted laughter, waiting for the tea to boil.... Seductive woman voices raised to the beat of an old wooden drum, calling their men to "ride, ride like the wind, just for me...." Soft feminine curves of sand, raised up and sculpted by the wind's ceaseless breath.... Starlit Saharan skies.... Villages where little that matters has changed for centuries... Where no matter how little you have, a guest is welcome to it.... This is the Sahel. Life on the edge of the Sahara - the biggest, most beautiful desert in the world. Land of drought and hardship and bad politics. Land of mystery and romance and shadowy heroism. This is Niger, home of the legendary Tuareg, who take their identity, in spirit if not by heredity, from the ancient Berber and Bedouin tribes of North Africa. Home also to the colorful Wodaabe sect of the Fulani people, whose men, during the ancient Gerewol festival, primp and preen to attract the attentions of their equally attractive mates-to-be. The Cure Salee is actually celebrated by both the Tuareg and Fulani people as a sort of homecoming after their migrations far to the south during the dry season. They gather near InGall because of the rich salt deposits there to rest, fatten their animals, give them the "salt cure," and enjoy each other's company through music, dancing, and frequently camel racing. The Fulani manifestation of the Cure Salee is called the Gerewol and includes male "beauty pageants," where the young men adorn themselves with jewelry and makeup to accentuate the Fulani ideals of beauty - long slender bodies, bright white teeth and eyes, and straight hair. Standing in a circle, singing a chant/song, and swaying to the music, the men seek to impress the onlooking young women and be chosen, sometimes for the night, sometimes for life.

Niger Niger could be the place at the beginning of the end of the world - it's the landscape that does it. There's black volcanic mountains towering over green oases, cascading waterfalls, desert cities with wide tree-lined boulevards, camels, camels, camels! and the dramatic, if lonely, beauty of the desert. The landscape is almost matched by its inhabitants. It's a country of aristocratic desert nomads, skilled artisans, silversmiths with magical powers, and a race of tall, lithe, people so physically beautiful that even the men enter beauty contests. Despite its end of the world otherness, Niger is a country perpetually on the brink of ruin. There was a brief moment in the late 1970s, after the discovery of uranium, when the country glowed with economic good health but after the bottom fell out of the market, it reverted to its hand to mouth existence. The desert, for all its beauty, is swallowing large chunks of the country at the rate of knots, there are ongoing and often bloody skirmishes between the government and Tuareg rebels, and the country is still recovering from the devastating Sahel droughts of the early 1970s. Full country name: Republic of Niger
Area: 1,267,000 sq km (494,130 sq mi)

In central Mali the Niger forms its vast inland delta (c.30,000 sq mi/77,700 sq km), a maze of channels and shallow lakes. An irrigation project in the delta, begun by the French in the 1930s and including a large dam at Sansanding (1941), has opened more than 100,000 acres (40,470 hectares) to farming, especially rice cultivation. Downstream from Timbuktu, Mali, the Niger begins a great bend, flowing first E and then SE out of Mali, through the Republic of Niger (where it forms part of the border with Benin), and into Nigeria.
