Bonaire Culture and History of Bonaire Bonaire's history is deeply rooted in its inhabitants and their culture. The tranquil beauty of the island is reflected in the faces of her people. From the first inhabitants, the Caiquetios (a branch of the Arawak Indians) who sailed from the coast of Venezuela almost 1000 years ago, to the many cultures now living and working in Bonaire today, the island has a distinct character that is all of its own. These influences from all over the world have combined to make Bonaire a unique potpourri. The people of African descent brought the great festival dances of the Simadan and the Bari. The Europeans brought the Waltz, the Mazuaka and the Polka. Latin American people introduced the Joropo and the Danza and the Rumba, the Meringue and the Carioca came from the northern Caribbean islands.

for the Newsgroup Bonaire's History A lthough Bonaire's future seems inextricably entwined with its remarkable coastal reefs and its austere natural beauty, the island's past is tied to an altogether different set of resources and attributes. With a comfortably dry climate and steady trade winds (the very conditions that have made it a windsurfing mecca), Bonaire has long been recognized as an ideal locale for the production of salt. For over three centuries, the island's culture and prosperity was dependent upon this most important of the world's spices. Salt is still produced on Bonaire, though the stunning salt beds of Pekelmeer are also home to one of the hemisphere's great populations of flamingoes Bonaire's first inhabitants were the Caiquetios, a branch of the Arawak Indians who sailed across from what is now Venezuela around 1000 AD. Traces of Caiquetio culture are visible at a number of archaeological sites, including those at Lac Bay and northeast of Kralendijk . Rock paintings and petroglyphs have survived at the caves at Spelonk, Onima, Ceru Pungi, and Ceru Crita-Cabai. The Caiquetios were apparently a very tall people, for the Spanish dubbed the Leeward Islands 'las Islas de los Gigantes' (the islands of the giants). The name the Caiquetios gave to their island was adapted into Spanish as 'Boynay.'

Nelson Carrilho
by Mavis de Jonge
One of the most striking characteristics of the works of the visual artist Nelson Carrilho is the direct link with Caribbean culture. The complexity and diversity of Caribbean culture, with its Afro-Caribbean heritage forms an important source of inspiration for Carrilho.
Besides, European influences also play a part in his works. As an Antillean artist, living in the Netherlands, Carrilho is quite consciously in search of the dialogue with the triangle: Caribbean area, Africa, Europe. It is pre-eminently the mixing, the merging of the many cultures that makes his works so powerful and interesting.
Two well-known examples of this are the monumental works Mama Baranka (Mother Rock) and Dragers van Verre (Carriers from Afar). Both sculptures contain clear indications of the Antillean background of the artist and have found their place in the Amsterdam society.
His modern sculptures narrate the cyclic process of departing and arriving in the ancient tradition of the Afro-Caribbean narrative art. Moreover, Carrilho makes use of recognizable symbols: boat, fish, cart, airplane, cross... Playing with recognizable symbols in unorthodox combinations forces you to reflect. An extra dimension is created by using roughly engraved signs in bronze. To the spectator intangible, mythical, almost invoking.
The themes used are universal. Carrilho possesses the gift to depict the snares of modern man in a modern society in a number of striking characteristics. Matters like humor and irony are not shunned. Carrilho allows us a different view of our world.

Geography
The Netherlands Antilles consist of two groups of islands in the Caribbean Sea. One group (the Leeward Islands) includes Curacao and Bonaire and lies about 50 km north of Venezuela; the other group of three islands (the Windward Islands), St Maarten, St Eustatius and Saba are 160 km east of Puerto Rico. Miami is 2.5 hours by air from Curacao, the largest and dominant island, which has the capital Willemstad. The land area is 960 sq km, with a coast line spanning 364km. The climate is tropical (12 degrees from the equator), but cooled by northeast trade winds. Average temperature is 27 C. Rain falls from October to February, mostly at night. The landscape is generally hilly with a volcanic interior. The highest point is 862m at Mount Scenery. Natural resources include phosphates and salt, but only 10% of the land is cultivable. Hurricanes can occur between July and October but rarely threaten Curacao and Bonaire which lie south of the Caribbean hurricane belt; only three have come near this century.
