General Information
Friend, a community of 1,100 people, is located on Route 6, 12 miles south of I80 in Southeast Nebraska's Saline County. Besides farming and livestock, Friend includes retail sales and manufacturing. A public 9-hole golf course and country club are located on the East side of town. There is also a hospital, long term care facility, K-12 school, and municipal pool. And many church denominations are represented. Welcome to Friend, Nebraska, where there are miles of smiles! History
Friendville was founded in 1870 by Mr. Charles E. Friend . In 1869 he left his home in Illinois and in the spring of 1870 he homesteaded the land where Friend is now located. He worked in Lincoln as a store clerk but later in 1870 he took an assortment of dry goods and returned to his hometown where he established and operated a flourishing dry goods store for many years. The Burlington and Missouri River Railroad reached Friend in 1871. The town at that time was no more than the homestead of Charles E. Friend. The government established a post office naming Mr. Friend as its first postmaster. He generously donated land for a school and church.

TAKE OUR ONLINE QUIZ Who we are AFCON is a coalition of Nebraska educational and literary organizations that have come together to promote academic freedom in Nebraska. "Academic freedom" is defined as intellectual freedom in educational and research contexts, and includes freedoms of belief and expression, as well as access to information and ideas. In support of this general goal, AFCON:
  • supports applications of the First Amendment in academic contexts, including schools, colleges, universities, and libraries; educates Nebraskans about the meaning and value of intellectual freedom, intellectual diversity, mutual respect, open communication, and uninhibited pursuit of knowledge, including the role of these ideals in academic contexts and in democratic self-government;

Pre-Law Academic Training Undergraduate Majors Recommended Curriculum Role of Your Academic Advisor ... Useful Links
ACADEMIC TRAINING: The formal academic training for law includes, with few exceptions, four years as an undergraduate leading to a bachelor's degree and three years in a law school. The attorney must be a well-rounded individual with knowledge in more than law. Understanding the basic psychology of people and the philosophy behind the law as well as using logic, which is necessary to present a case, are important. Cornell Law School's Legal Information Institute web site gives some insight into the coursework taken during law school. Their site also includes the different topics of law arranged by subject.
UNDERGRADUATE MAJORS: RECOMMENDED CURRICULUM:
Regardless of the major, pre-law students should be involved in an undergraduate program which is intellectually challenging and requires rigorous academic discipline. Law schools welcome and encourage a variety of educational backgrounds among their students. Breadth and intellectual maturity are more important than a particular subject matter. Law schools do recommend that the pre-law curriculum be carefully selected. A reasonable exposure to such subjects as political science, history, literature, English composition, economics, sociology, and philosophy will provide a good background for the full appreciation of the law.
An important skill in law school is writing ability; undergraduate courses that develop this skill should be stressed. Electives such as drama and theater arts, debate, creative writing, and speech can help sharpen those skills needed by a member of the legal profession. Finally, the personal discipline used in the study of science will help prepare the student for the rigors of the law curriculum. Moreover, a basic knowledge of the physical and biological sciences will often help in the cases the lawyer pleads. Many law schools expect the student to have completed at least one accounting course.

P.O. Box 499 Columbus, NE 68602 econdev@nppd.com Nebraska... the Heartland of America Nebraska, with a population of 1.67 million, is the only state in the union governed by a nonpartisan unicameral legislature. The State Capitol in Lincoln, recognized as one of the world's greatest accomplishments, is the site for government business. The state's positive business climate includes a constitutional right-to-work provision, competitive labor costs, strong work ethic, high productivity, and a low rate of absenteeism. A diverse combination of agriculture, manufacturing, and service, guards the state against extreme fluctuations in the national economy. Nebraskans are known for their reputation of hard work and dedication to future growth. The beauty and diversity of the landscape are welcoming from the rolling hills and fertile valleys in the east leveling toward the central part of the state. The beautiful Sandhills characterize the north-central region, and the western Panhandle and southwestern corners of the state are known as the high plains. Wide-open spaces allow for room to build, expand, and enjoy life. The beauty of the sunsets compliments the peacefulness of life in Nebraska. Cost of Living: The cost of living is significantly lower in Nebraska than other states in the nation. This, coupled with a lots of space and a friendly atmosphere make Nebraska a great place to live!
