The Office of the White House Initiative on Tribal Colleges and Universities (WHITCU) leads the implementation of Executive Order 13270, ensuring that the Tribal Colleges are more fully recognized and have full access to federal programs benefiting other higher education institutions. "Tribal Colleges and Universities help preserve irreplaceable languages and cultural traditions. At the same time, of course, they offer a high quality college education to thousands of students, and provide much needed job training and other means of economic development in Indian country... All Americans deserve an excellent education, including those who attend Tribal Colleges and Universities."
President George W. Bush

by Ed Boyce Albuquerque, NM Representatives from more than a dozen Native American tribal colleges, school districts and community groups recently participated in a day-long seminar on Distance Education in Native America , sponsored by the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) , and the Albuquerque High Performance Computing Center (AHPCC) at the University of New Mexico, a National Computational Science Alliance (Alliance) partner. Presentations and discussion at the seminar. ranged from basic demonstrations of collaborative and education delivery systems to discussions about tribal community telecommunications services and connectivity frustrations. The event also highlighted success stories, including a presentation by Dr. George Baldwin on "The Evolution of Electronic Pedagogy in an Outcome Based Learning Environment: Learning, Teaching, and the Culture of Technology at California's Newest University- CSU Monterey Bay." The PACI Grid refers to the national scale computational and information infrastructure being prototyped by the Alliance. The Grid will connect people, supercomputers, virtual environments, scientific instruments, educational tools, and large datasets through a seamless, integrated, persistent environment operating over high-speed networks. The Access Grid is a subset of the PACI Grid that refers to the technology needed to link people in virtual spacessuch as teamwork sessions, remote training and distance education classes. The Access Grid creates collaborative virtual workspaces that bring people together in real time regardless of their physical location.
