The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Rural Development mission area and the 1890 Land-Grant colleges and universities are working together on a new approach to support the development of businesses that create quality jobs. This partnership will help the 1890 institutions provide businesses with the assistance needed to organize and operate efficiently and profitably.
The 1890 institutions have some of the best agricultural science and business education programs in the nation. USDA is building on the strength of these programs to ensure that quality education related to small business development is also available in these communities.
    Program Goals
    • Develop income-producing projects for under-developed rural communities. Create self-sustaining, long-term economic development in targeted areas of high unemployment through partnerships with the universities and community-based organizations. Assist and guide these communities in becoming self-sustainable.

    A SHEEO E-Mail Survey
    Last updated October 2000
In 1997, as part of a SHEEO initiative on state strategies to support student transitions—K-16, SHEEO conducted a survey asking states to identify initiatives sponsored by their agencies that support early outreach and preparation for college. That information was reported in a 1998 publication, Statewide College Admissions, Student Preparation and Remediation Policies and Programs. To update state initiatives, in May 2000, SHEEO conducted an e-mail survey asking state higher education agencies to respond to the following questions:
  • Does your agency sponsor a formal effort to link K-12 and postsecondary education (K-16 or related initiative)? What is the name of the initiative and provide a brief description. When did the initiative begin? If information on the state initiative is available on a website, provide the specific website address.
  • The following is a summary of responses.

The change was effective March 1. Brent joined the Warner faculty six years ago and teaches fiscal and economic policy issues relating to education. His research interests include nontraditional revenues at the local level and cost-effective use of education dollars. "I chose the Warner School to have the opportunity to work with Tyll van Geel (Earl B. Taylor professor and chair, educational leadership) and Randy Curren (associate professor, educational leadership), two well-respected scholars in the field of educational leadership and policy," Brent explains. "It is now clear to me that it was the correct choice. I have benefited greatly from my interactions with these two scholars, as well as other Warner faculty." Van Geel, was pleased with the announcement. "Speaking both for the educational leadership program of the Warner School and myself personally, we could not be more delighted that Professor Brent achieved tenure. As a colleague we could not ask for more.

    History
Leon County, originally part of Escambia County and later a part of Gadsden County, was created by the Territorial Legislature in 1824. Named for Ponce De Leon, Leon County was one of the most populous and prosperous counties in ante-bellum Florida. Tallahassee, named for the "old fields" that it once encompassed, earned the title early in the 16th century from the Apalachee Indians who inhabited the area. Legend says that the final spelling was chosen by Octavia Walton, daughter of the territorial governor of Florida. Today, Tallahassee exemplifies not only the influence of the Indian, but also that of the Spanish, French and English who occupied the area in succession. The City of Tallahassee, the county seat and only incorporated city in Leon County, was established in 1825, following a decision by the legislature to locate the capital of the new Florida Territory midway between the population centers of St. Augustine and Pensacola.
