It is approximately 855 kilometres off the east coast of Madagascar, Africa being the neared continent. Though nestled up alongside eastern Africa, Mauritius is actually more influenced by its British and French ties and massive Indian workforce than by the African mainland... Mauritius is a volcanic island (about 10 million years old), measuring 58km (36mi) from north to south and 47km (29mi) from east to west (only 865 square kilometers in area) - about two-thirds the size of Luxembourg or the US state of Rhode Island. It lies in the Indian Ocean, roughly 800km (500mi) east of Madagascar, 3860km (2400mi) south-west of India and 220km (135mi) north-east of its nearest neighbour, Runion. Mauritius is well known for its tourism because of its Sun,Sand and Sea ("SSS"). It is surrounded by a brightly coloured tropical sea,enhanced by golden beaches and covered with swaying fields of sugarcane,with a wealth of forrests full of wonderful birds. Animals and plants live in the open valleys, in the dense forests,on the beach and in the sea. Mauritius being a tropical country,also have a large variety of fruits, either wild ones(Goyave de Chine, [French word]) or those cultivated on purpose (Mangoes, litchis, pineapples, etc...). Their trees mostly start bearing their fruits as from October, during the summer months, until January or February.
