Room 108 Summary
Room 108 is owned and operated by grade one teacher John Rickey. It has over 400 pages of educational activities for primary children. There are no passwords or entry fees but the site is free to access and use over the Internet. All activities have an educational focus for the primary student and try to make learning both engaging and fun on the computer over the Internet. Stories: Animated interactive picture book stories are what make Room 108 unique. There is a library of twenty complete stories. Each story has animated pages and background music to relate meaning to the text that the student is reading. The stories vary from seven to twenty five pages and range in reading level from grade one to grade three reading level.
For non readers, many stories have the option to have the story read audibly using real audio. Most stories are accompanied with a self marking comprehension quiz or educational game at the end. These games relate directly to the story which has just been read. Students also have the option to have a word list read to them of the difficult words in the story. This occurs at the beginning of the story. Some stories allow the student to enter their own name into the story and complete story will include their name as a character. There is also a group of animated books based on Dolch words that allow students to click words to hear the pronunciation of the word. These books are set up for the beginning reader to read independently.

Developing the Language of Mathematics in Partial Immersion:
The Ladder to Success
Regla Armengol, Spanish Immersion Teacher
Lake Anne Elementary School, Fairfax County Public Schools, VA Kendra stands proudly in front of the class calendar. She has successfully answered a problem-solving question: What is the date of the last Tuesday in October? But, now comes the hard part: Kendra, how did you solve the problem? Her eyes dart from the teacher's face to the calendar. Obviously, the wheels are turning as she works to understand her thinking processes. She is putting the pieces together, and it takes time and concentration. Then, she explains: I know that October has 31 days, so the last Tuesday must be here. I started at 31 and counted backwards. (Note: This classroom exchange took place in Spanish.) Kendra is 7 years old. This is only her second year in our Spanish partial immersion program, and already she has succeeded in doing what truly makes a person bilingual: She can think in the target language, and she can explain her thinking to herself and others. This type of language development does not happen overnight, nor can it be found when teaching is haphazard. It results from the implementation of cohesive teaching strategies and a daily process of hard work. Helping students to develop mathematics problem-solving skills is an important challenge for those of us who teach a foreign language through academic content. It requires the simultaneous development of cognitive academic language and higher order thinking skills. Yet, problem solving is the crux of mathematics education today. If we are to meet our goals of teaching both content and language, we must address the problem-solving challenge.

Submitted by: Dollucy Grainger, Pre-k teacher Have a designated place for all items backpacks, folders, library books, and anything else your students may need to turn in. Then have students mark themselves present by moving a clothespin or card with their name on it. Then have the students do an independent activity such as math tubs with specific activities or a writing exercise for 15 minutes. This activity gives you time to check for parent notes, do your roll, and any other morning changes or problems that may come up. Bell Work ... Submitted by: Carol, Grades 1-8 When the bell rings and the children come in after I meet them at the door, they have work to do. I put a quiz, problem or a review of some work on the chalk board. This is called "Bell Work." The children have a "bell work book" that they complete the work in. They date the page and begin the work as soon as they enter class. This gives me time to do all the administrative jobs that I need to do first thing in the morning. The work is collected and I mark it or I assign someone to mark it. It prevents many disruptions and lets the children realize that they come to class to work.

Why Are We Writing in Math Class? (6th-8th)
Brief Description of the Unit:
Oral and written communication skills are essential for discussing mathematical concepts and problem-solving processes. In this unit, students will select and apply an appropriate strategy to solve a word problem. Students need to show all steps and write a complete explanation of the problem-solving process. Students have been frustrated with word problems for a long time because they traditionally have been confusing, seemingly irrelevant, or boring. The approaches used in this unit differ from traditional approaches because:
  • This unit involves either real life or high-interest problems. This unit asks students to explain the problem-solving process in writing. This unit helps students better understand solving problems, applying strategies correctly, and communicating. The pressure is not on getting the "right" answer.
If students can grow into expert problem solvers, are able to accurately apply strategies, and can clearly communicate the process, then the problems will be solved correctly.

There are two lengths of i-Maths: single-day and multi-day, as identified below. Complete i-Maths include student investigations, teacher notes, and answers. Some of the multi-day i-Maths also include video clips of teachers and students using the investigation, sample student work, assessment tasks, and related professional development activities. Student i-Maths contain just the student investigations. They are ready to use by students. e-Math Investigations are selected E-examples from the electronic version of NCTM's Principles and Standards for School Mathematics . Each E-example consists of an interactive math applet, suggestions for student activities, and some discussion for teachers. These investigations can be identified by the icon to the right.
