Ggantija Temples built 3,600-3,000 BCE
MNAJDRA RESTORED
UNESCO has designated the main Megalithic Temples of Malta and the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum as WORLD HERITAGE SITES. The following is an extract from the Reports of the 4th (1980) and the 16th (1992) Sessions of the Committee: Seven megalithic temples are to be found on the islands of Malta and Gozo, each a result of an individual development. The Ggantija complex on the island of Gozo is remarkable for its superhuman achievements dating from [the Bronze Age] 3,600 BCE On the island of Malta, the temples of Hagar Qim, Mnajdra and Tarxien are unique architectural masterpieces, given the very limited resources of their builders. The Ta' Hagrat and Skorba complexes bear witness to the development of the temple tradition in Malta. The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is an enormous subterranean structure excavated with cyclopean rigging to lift huge blocks of coralline limestone around the year 2500 bc (3,000 BCE). The Hypogeum, possibly conceived as a sanctuary, has been a necropolis since prehistoric times. The Megalithic Temples of the Maltese islands are on the prestigious World Heritage Sites list, but a few people know about these prehistoric free-standing stone structures in the world which are much older than the Pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge. This Web site is being constructed to give information about these sites and the other temple sites in Malta that are not on the UNESCO list.

Issue A023 of 29 September 2002
Conference: Exploring Malta's Prehistoric Temple Culture 25, 26, 27, September 2003 at the DePorres Cultural Center in Sliema, Malta Website: http://www.otsf.org/EMPTC-conference.html The purpose of the conference is to encourage a broad examination of the megalithic monuments and related artifacts of Malta and Gozo from a variety of fields of research. The goal is to fill some of the gaps in understanding who these amazing prehistoric people were and what happened to them. It is further suggested that relationships between various aspects of the Maltese material and the antiquity of other regions may reveal pattern and association. The EMPTC conference will provide a meeting place for professionals and scholars from a variety of disciplines including Archaeology and Anthropology, History and Prehistory, the Physical and Social Sciences, Mythology and Folklore, Philosophy and Religion. The intent is to facilitate multi-disciplinary exchange of studies as focused on a common interest: identifying and understanding the Neolithic "Temple Culture" of the Maltese Islands. There has been a tendency to assume that the (Neolithic Maltese) islands were completely isolated, apart from the import of a few raw materials. It is high time that a more balanced assessment, under the headings architectural, religious and commercial, should be attempted.

A BSTRACTS Volume 50 Number 4 July/August 1997 C ELEBRATING AN I SLAND H ERITAGE B Y M ARK R OSE The Neolithic temple of Hagar Qim, Malta (Mark Rose) [LARGER IMAGE] The seventeenth-century antiquarian Gian Francesco Abela, vice-chancellor of the Knights of St. John, has been called the Father of Maltese Historiography for his Descrittione di Malta (1647), and the Founder of the Malta Museum for his antiquities collection, which he willed to the College of Jesuit Fathers in Valletta, stipulating that the objects be kept "in perpetuo...a benefitio de curiosi antiquarii." In 1902 construction workers discovered an underground burial complex, the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, and emptied most of its 32 chambers of bones, dumping them in nearby fields. The Maltese archaeologist Themistocles Zammitt conducted a clean-up excavation at the Hypogeum a few years later, recovering pottery, stone tools, beads and pendants, and figurines of people and animals. Because of these efforts and his excavations at the Tarxien temples from 1915 to 1919, Zammitt earned the epithet Father of Maltese prehistory. After Zammitt, however, Maltese archaeology faltered and work on the islands was dominated by British and Italian scholars. Today, Maltese archaeology is experiencing a rebirth. VALLETTA (Malta)
V aIletta, the capital, was buiIt by Jean de la Valette, French Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, after the epic siege of 1565. It dominates, one wide sweep, the island's historic Grand Harbor - one of the finest natural ports in Europe. Within its limited boundaries is reflected some of Malta's rich heritage of archaeology, history, architecture, art and culture.
THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY T he more important collections covering Maltese archaeology are housed in the Auberge de Provence, Valletta, one of the Inns of the Knights of St. John. Collections of prehistoric pottery, sculpture, statuettes, stone implements and personal ornaments recovered from the Maltese megalithic temples and other prehistoric sites are exhibited. Typical examples of tomb furniture of the Punic and Roman periods are also displayed.
THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS T his 18th century palace houses paintings, sculptures, furniture and other exhibits connected with the Order of St. John. Works by Domenico di Michelino, Carpaccio, Perugino, Tintoretto, Reni, Valentin, Mathias Stomer, Preti, Tiepolo, Favray and Vernet are permanently displayed. A section is specifically reserved for works by Maltese artists. Occasional exhibitions, together with concerts and lectures, are also held here. ln the monetarium a unique collection of coins and medals may be viewed by appointment. (See also "Mediterranean Congress Center").
ST JOHN'S CATHEDRAL AND MUSEUM S t. John's Co-Cathedral, formerly the Conventual Church of the Order, is historically and artistically one of the most important monuments on the island. It was built between 1573 and 1577 to the design of Gerolamo Cassar (1520-1586), chief engineer of the Order. The "Beheading of St. John", Caravaggio's masterpiece, hangs in the Oratory. The museum houses a unique collection of Flemish tapestries, siIver objects and church vestments.

Archaeology Archaeology of the Maltese Islands Illustrated throughout in colour, this is an easily accessible and exciting introduction to the rich archaeological remains to be found in the Maltese archipelago, dating from the Neolithic period through to the early Christian era, up to the 6th century AD. An ancestral religious worship of a fertility goddess is suggested by the discovery of figurines with undoubtedly feminine attributes. Malta also boasts one of the highest concentrations of megalithic temples still in existence and thought to be the oldest open-air religious constructions in the world. The Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni is also an important monument. It is built over three subterranean levels and laid out like a labyrinth, resembling an underground version of the megalithic temples . 2000. 63p. Map, diagrams, colour photographs. 27cm.

Malta: an archaeological guide Malta and Gozo have had a richly varied history over the last 6,000 years or so. There are temples, goddesses, hypogea, cemeteries, Bronze Age villages, caves, wrecks, catacombs, tombs, villas, baths, fortifications… and 'cart-ruts'. This guide has a dual purpose: to describe the remains and where to find them, and to show, as far as archaeological research has so far revealed it, what the sites mean in the history of the islands.

Issue No. 391 Sunday 19 Deceember 1999
An in-depth study of prehistory
by Stephen Calleja Facets of Maltese Prehistory is the title of a new book which deals at length with "controversial" issues surrounding the interpretation and appraisal of Malta's past.
The book is the first publication of the Prehistoric Society of Malta, and it was edited by Dr Anton Mifsud and Dr Charles Savona Ventura. The society intends to issue a publication each year, and it is already planned that the 2000 issue will feature the various interpretations assigned to the cart-ruts of the Maltese Islands.
In this year's publication, the various writers have dealt not merely with the interpretation of archaeology, but also with other related topics such as epistemology, biogeography and natural history, art and architecture, aggression and defence, death and burial customs, mythology and religion, and the adaptation rites of new cultures.
Traditional views are challenged and new ideas introduced. These hypotheses and re-appraisals include the date of the earliest humans in Malta, the sequence of the fauna in their environment, the social context of their art, their megalithic structures and sanctuaries, their burial customs and the carry-over of their religious beliefs to succeeding cultures.
