Ferdinand Magellan
By Austin and Dexter
Introduction
Ferdinand Magellan was a Spanish explorer. He attempted to sail around the world. His crew was the first to succeed.
Early Life He was born in the spring of 1480 in Northern Portugal to a family of lower nobility. His parents died when he was ten. He enjoyed climbing rocks near his house. When he was twelve he was appointed the queenís messenger in the royal courts, and there he learned about other explorers and navigating ships. When he was older, King Manuel II fired him so then he went to work for Spain. When Magellan was young he wanted to be a sailor, but before that he fought in many wars. His first time at sea was in 1505 when he was 25. Like Columbus, he thought he could get to the Spice Islands by sailing west.
Voyages
Magellan left Spain in September of 1519 with five ships called the Santiago, the San Antonio, the Conceplion, the Trinidad, and the Victoria. Around 1520 one of the captains deserted him and sailed the San Antonio back to Spain. Not long after that, his crew wanted to hang him because their water started to mold, and they had to eat rats. Many of the crew suffered from scurvy. Magellan sailed southwest from Spain, around South America, then headed northwest across the Pacific Ocean to the Philippines were he died. His crew then sailed west around Africa and then north to Spain. Discoveries and Claims Just around South America, he found a strait and named it after himself. His crew also discovered many spices in the Spice Islands.

Ferdinand Magellan
was a world explorer. Many consider him the greatest navigator of Europe's 16th century age of sea going exploration and credit his expedition with the first circumnavigation of planet Earth. NASA's Venus probe, the aptly named Magellan spacecraft shown above in an artist's conception, provided a global view of the poorly known surface of Venus - just as Magellan's expedition provided the beginnings of a global perspective of the Earth.

He was a believer, brave, clever, noble, commanding he had a lot of courage. When he died what was left of of crew took over.Magellan was the most outstanding explorer of all time. Magellan sailed around the world The reason for this is that he attempted to sail around the world. Magellan was in the military for a while. He believed that he could get to the rich spice islands by sailing west of the Spanish settlements in the New World. The Crew Suffers While Magellan and his crew were sailing around the world they suffered from many things, There was a shortage of fresh food and some people died of starvation and other diseases. There was not enough water and it became contaminated. They ate rats and ox hides and sawdust to avoid starvation. They ate spoiled cheese and meat. They drank foul smelling water. They also ate maggots. It was not very clean on the ships. The smells were very bad.

Captain General Ferdinand Magellan The 1960 submerged circumnavigation of Triton was long and difficult - but compared to the 1519 voyage of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan - it was a day at the beach. Magellan's armada of 5 small ships and 270 men left Sanlucar de Barrameda, Spain on 20 September 1519. His fleet consisted of Trinidad, San Antonio, Concepcion, Victoria and Santiago . The largest ship displaced only 120 tons. Their objective was to sail west to the Moluccas, or Spice Islands, and claim them for Spain. Magellan had no idea how far away they were. Like Columbus, Magellan was a foreigner in charge of Spanish captains. Three of these captains plotted to kill him. After a brief stop in the Canary Islands, one of the three led a mutiny against Magellan. When the fleet reached Patagonia (present day Argentina), another mutiny broke out and an attempt was made on Magellan's life. Magellan executed one of the Spanish captains and marooned another in Tierra Del Fuego. Attempting to find a passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific, the Santiago was lost in heavy seas. After discovering what he called the Straits of All Saints, later named after him, Magellan led his remaining 4 ships through the straits in a masterpiece of seamanship requiring 38 days. During this passage, the captain of the

Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who was very important during Renaissance times. He was born in the spring of 1480 in a lower noble family. He circumnavigated the world and he proved that the world was round and it had no dragons at the edge of it. He died in 1521 in Spice Island.
Magellan was an explorer who sailed for the king of Spain. He destroyed many ideas from the church and many beliefs from the Medieval times. He proved 3 main things: the world was round, there was a water route to go west and that there was a water route around the world. Magellan and his crew set sail from Seville, Spain in 1519 to find a new route to the west. He settled in Patagonia (now known as Argentina) on March 31, 1520. He started his voyage from Patagonia by sailing by the tip of South America. He thought the ocean next to South America (Pacific) was very short and could get through in 2-3 days. He crossed it in 4 months. He named it Pacific because it was very calm.
In conclusion Ferdinand Magellan was very significant during the Renaissance. He proved the world three main things: the world was round, there was a water route to go west and that there was a water route around the world. He made a very good fragment of history and to the people during the Renaissance changed

Ferdinand Magellan By Tiffany Biographical Facts
Major Achievements
Magellan was set for the journey with 265 men, 5 ships and food for 2 years. His flagship was The Trinidad. He had lots of trouble searching for crewmembers because he was Portuguese. The Spanish men didn't want to have to serve for a Portuguese man. It ended up that some of them were just realised from jail, or not trained. During the trip, there were lots of false alarms and troubles. Juan de Cartangena, a captain from another ship, led a mutiny against him. Magellan succeeded to making Juan a prisoner. Every time he wanted to travel really quickly, the weather was the worst ever, or one of the crew was too sick to travel too quickly. In December, Magellan and his crew arrived at the bay of what is now Rio de Janeiro. Here, he met some of the Natives that were living there. He was actually extremely nice to them. Magellan traded Spanish goods for the goose, fish, potatoes and other foods. On January 10 th , 1520, they found a new bay and thought they were really close to the Spice Islands. Magellan waited for 2 weeks for the good news that he was expecting, but when they came back and told him that it was not any good. The straight was just a river for miles and miles off. When he did find another bay, he discovered different kinds of spices such as pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves. When the crew arrived back to Spain, they got credit for these spices. In the end, when he crossed what is now the Pacific Ocean, he named it that because Pacific means peaceful.

Ferdinand Magellan Essay written by Monica B. Ferdinand Magellan was born circa 1480 in Sabrosa, Portugal. His father was Dom Ruy Magellan, a nobleman and sheriff. He was married to Donha Alda De Mesquite. He was born Fernão de Magalhães, but changed it later. Ferdinand Magellan had 2 siblings: a sister named Isabel and a brother named Diago De Souse.
This aspiring explorer and adventurer spent his childhood as a page at the Portuguese court doing errands and chores. He also went to school at a monastery. When he was only 10 years old, Magellan’s parents died. About 5 years later, the King of Portugal died, and Magellan’s brother-in-law, Duke Manuel (sometimes called Emanuel), was made the king.
In 1506, Magellan went to the East Indies, taking part in many exploratory and military expeditions in the Spice Islands. By 1510 he had been promoted to the rank of captain. However, his military glory ended after he secretly sailed a ship east without permission. Because of that, Magellan lost his command and had to return to Portugal.
Magellan was expecting a decent job when he returned, but was in for a surprise. He only managed to get a lowly job at court, much like the one he spent in his childhood. Magellan asked the king for a higher paying and more respected job, but the king refused. From that experience, Magellan concluded that the King of Portugal didn’t like him one bit.

Camp Walnut Grove Elementary School Fifth Graders Resources Explorers Most explorers explore different lands to get gold. Some other explorers explore to see about religious matters. But others still want to trade for goods they didn't have or needed. Most explorers were brought to explore because of curiosity to sail across oceans, to rocket to the moon and dive beneath the seas. There are many different types of explorers like:Portuguese, French, [ Spanish ], Italian and even Egyptian. The Earliest Explorer The earliest explorer was an Egyptian named Hannu. In 2,750 BC he explorered to the limits of the world known at that time. He traveled to the land of Punt. This was the region at the southeatern end of the Red Sea including small parts of Ethiopia and Somalia. He returned home with great riches in precious metals, myrrh and wood.He left a summary of his adventures carved into a rock. In 15th century BC Queen Hatshepsut, who was also eager for great riches also sent an expedition to the land of Punt. Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus] was born in 1451 and he died in 1506. He was a Genoese sailor who convinced King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain to finance a mission to reach the Indies by sailing westward from Europe. His estimate of the short distance for his mission was influenced by some miscalculations of the Earth's diameter and by Biblical accounts. Columbus made four voyages to the new world including the years: 1492, 1493, 1498 and 1502.
