    85. Asoka
Brief history of the Indian Buddhist king who tried to spread Buddhism to Syria, Egypt, Greece, macedonia, and North Africa.
    http://www.zip.com.au/~lyallg/Asoka.htm
Asoka, grandson of Chandragupta, was one of the first royal patrons of Buddhism. The first was, perhaps, Bimbisara, who lived at the time of the Buddha. Asoka's legend is recorded in a second century book called the "Asokavadana" which was translated into Chinese by Fa-ch'in in 300 A.D. He is also known from his edicts written on rocks and pillars throughout India. In his youth. Asoka was known as Canda Asoka, the fierce Asoka, due to his aggressive nature. As a prince, he was appointed governor of Vidisa (modern Bhilsa) where he married a rich merchant's daughter. On hearing of his father's impending death, he hurried to the Capital, Pataliputra, where, after occupying it, he killed all of the rival princes with the exception of his own brother. This brutality met with the opposition of the populace, delaying his coronation for four years. He ascended to the throne in 270 B.C. Eight years into his reign, he invaded Kalinga (modern Orissa) killing many thousands of people in battle whilst many thousands died from the effects of the war. This was the turning point of his life. He halted his military campaigns and, being a Buddhist, he focused his attention instead to religious conquests, known as Dharmavijaya. He appointed his officers to tour the country on religious missions. After twenty years of his reign, he visited the Buddha's birthplace at Lumbini in modern Nepal, where he erected a pillar recording his visit. He also visited Bodh Gaya, where the Buddha attained Enlightenment, as well as Sarnath, where the Buddha preached his first sermon. It was here that he erected a pillar threatening excommunication to any monk who caused a schism in the Sangha. He abandoned meat eating for himself and advocated moral values for his subjects. He also promoted tolerance towards all religions which he supported financially. The prevalent religions of that time were the sramanas or wandering ascetics, Brahmins, Ajivakas and Jains. He recommended that all religions desist from self praise and condemnation of others. His pronouncements were written on rocks at the periphery of his kingdom and on pillars along the main roads and where pilgims gathered. He also established many hospitals for both humans and animals At one stage, he conferred many gifts on the Buddhist Sangha which resulted in the attraction to its ranks of non-Buddhist hangers-on and disreputable people looking for an easier life. This resulted in a degeneration, and lack of purity in the Sangha. He decided to rectify this problem by convening a Sangha Council at Pataliputra to determine the true nature of Dharma practice and to banish those who would not adhere to it. Following this Council, he decided to extend his missions to other countries, which included the Ionian Greeks, Ghandar, Kashmir, the Himalayan Regions, Mysore. Ceylon. Burma, Malaya and Sumatra. He sent his son, Mahendra, and his daughter Sanghamitra to Ceylon and their visit is celebrated in Sri Lanka by public holidays to this day. His 13th Rock Edict records that he tried to spread Buddhism to the kingdoms of Antiochus II, King of Syria, Ptolemy of Egypt, Antigonos of Macedonia, Alexander of Epirus (Northern Greece) and Magas in Cyrenia (North Africa). What a difference modern history may have been had he succeeded. Under Asoka, nearly the whole of the Indian Continent was unified for the first time in history. Dharma meant for Asoka morality, active social concern, religious tolerance, ecological awareness, observance of ethical precepts and renunciation of war.

    Macedonia's Albanians and Their History
    Negative Experience with South Slavs
Ekkehard Kraft Although the Albanian insurgency in Macedonia was brought in from the outside, the rebels enjoy the sympathies of some of the ethnic Albanian Macedonians. Despite a slow but steady improvement of their situation, the latter are still strongly affected by memories of the negative experiences which the country's Albanian populace suffered in the course of the 20th century in a state dominated by South Slavs. Peace in Macedonia hangs by a silken thread. The actions of Albanian rebels could easily trigger the kind of ethnic solidarity all too familiar from other former constituent republics of Yugoslavia, and thus pull Macedonia into a maelstrom of violence. Although the situation of Albanians in Macedonia cannot in any way be compared to that of their ethnic fellows under Milosevic, and compares very favorably with the situation of other minorities in the Balkans, the insurgents who have infiltrated Macedonia from Kosovo enjoy the sympathy of at least part of the Albanian populace in that country.

    History and Government
    History:
Sobranje Sobranje election in September 2002 returned another SDAM-led coalition under a new premier, Branko Crvenkovski. Other than the emergence of the Democratic Union for Integration, which supplanted the DPP as the main custodian of Albanian interests, the complexion of the new assembly is similar to previous ones.
Government: Legislative power rests with the elected 120-seat national assembly, the Sobranje . Executive authority is wielded by the elected State President who appoints the Council of Ministers. In September 1996, new legislation was approved, dividing the FYROM into 123 municipalities. In July 1998, parliament adopted a new electoral system. Under the new legislation, parliamentarians are elected by a mixture of a majoritarian, constituency-based system and proportional representation: of 120 seats, 85 are elected by the former and 35 by the latter.

This area seems to coincide with the area called Macedonia in ancient times. Republic of Skopje (or Skopje in short) and Skopjans are the terms used to describe the ex-Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia and the various ethnic groups living there (especially the ones who call themselves "Macedonians"). With reference to ancient times the lands of the Republic of Skopje were divided among various tribes, the Dardanians in the north (including the area where the city of Skopje is presently located), the Paeonians in the south and the Illyrians in the west.

Macedonia Through The Ages Macedonia for the Macedonians ! The Propaganda Today in the Republic of Macedonia ANCIENT MACEDONIA BRIEF BACKROUND Macedonia was a country to the north of Greece. It lied on the Aegean Sea. The Greeks considered Macedonians as barbarians. The end of Greek dominance in the known world, or as it is otherwise known the Macedonian Era began at The Battle Of Chaeronea August 338BC. THE MACEDONIAN ERA In the year 357BC the threat to Greece did not come from Persia but from the young and intelligent King Phillip 2 of Macedonia. At first Phillip began interfering in the affairs of Greece as the ally of one or another state. To begin with Phillip acted peaceably. In August 338BC the Macedonian army met the combined forces of Athens and Thebes at the Battle Of Chaeronea. The main Macedonian weapon was a long pike, the sarissa , terrifying to men armed only with short lances and swords. It was used by foot soldiers in the Macedonian phalanx an indestructible body of men, sarissas and shields. As long as the walls of the phalanx were not broken it was indestructible. There was fierce fighting from the start with neither side gaining the upper hand. The Greek General said "you have to keep attacking until you push the enemy back to Macedonia" and Phillip remarked "the Greeks just don’t know how to win". Phillip ordered his left wing to drop back steadily, the Greeks sensing victory urged on but what they didn’t know is that they were walking into a well-rehearsed trap. The Macedonian cavalry (horsemen) led by Prince Alexander then came and attacked. The entire Greek wall was broken and they were cut down each one by one. It was a great victory to the Macedonians, as they had wiped out the army of the proudest civilisation of their time in a few hours in August 338BC at Chaeronea.
