Two years ago, Ann Arbor native Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin had to pay their own way to their first W Cup luge race. And last month, with the Winter Olympics looming, Chris Thorpe broke a bone in his right wrist while training with doubles partner Gordy Sheer. Talk about being high. On Friday, both teams won medals - Thorpe and Sheer the silver, and Grimmette and Martin the bronze - to break the United States' 34-year Olympic jinx in the sport. "I think breaking my hand helped," said the 27-year-old Thorpe, of Marquette. "It distracted us a little bit. We knew we were definitely at a disadvantage, and we started to go up from there." Some in the crowd seemed to be gasping for air as the last run began Friday with both U.S. teams in medal contention. "I didn't breathe for an hour," said Ron Rossi, executive director of the U.S. Luge Association. "A lot of people have been working for a long time, some of us 20 years, to get us over the hump." These four sliders have excelled in the sport like no one else before them in the United States. Sheer and Thorpe became the first team members to win a World Cup title, winning four races to lock up the 1996-97 title. "I'm hoping it continues for a while; I'm not ready to quit," said Martin, who along with partner Mark Grimmette earned an Olympic bronze medal in the luge last week at the 18th Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. "I still like to slide, travel around . . . "I've only competed in one Senior Championshipdidn't do so well. It would be nice to have another shot at World Championships (in 1999)." Martin, at age 24, sees good sledding through at least age 30. "Right now, I'm pretty charged up," the 1992 Gunn High graduate said after earning his medal, "and I want to stay in. It's absolutely amazing that I'm standing on third-place (medal stand) at the Olympics." There's also plenty of room to improve. Martin and Grimmette, who came to Nagano as pre-Olympic favorites based on being World Cup champs, fell just short of their gold-medal goal in the closest luge doubles competition in Olympic history. Martin and Grimmette were the first to turn in their final run, clocking a two-run total of 1:41.217. Singles and Doubles have two distinct forums which are the Short Program and Free Skating. The Short Program is designed to demonstrate a specific set of skating talents . During Free Skating competition, the Olympic skaters perform to music and are allowed to create a more freeform routine. Ice Dancing provides a sequenced dance on ice that is similar to ballroom dancing performed by a pair of skaters. Olympic Figure skating is an event that draws a large audience from around the world. There are six types of Alpine Skiing events at the Olympic Winter Games. These Alpine Skiing events are Downhill Racing, Slalom, the Giant Slalom, Super Giant Slalom, and Alpine Combination. Downhill Racing is the fastest and most exciting event featured at the Winter Olympic Games. Seventeen years and two trips to the Olympic Medals podium later, Chris has become one of the sports "best-ever" and has one eye firmly fixed on a fifth trip to the Olympics in 2006. The other eye is now firmly fixed on his new born daughter Skylar (born March 13, 2002). Chris and his family now reside in Gainesville, Florida.

He didn't fly, however, until coming to Utah. Ammann soared above the Wasatch Mountains and into Olympic history Wednesday, winning his second gold medal of these Games by surprising the field in the 120-meter event. The Swiss, who is 20 but could pass for 14, joined Finland's Matti Nykanen as the only jumpers to win both the 120- and 90-meter events in the same Olympics. Nykanen did it in Calgary in 1988.
