Bernardo de Gálvez was born in Macharaviaya, among the mountains of Málaga, Spain on July 23, 1746. His birth date is celebrated as Gálvez Day in a few cities across the United States and has been recognized as a day of commemoration by individuals and state congresses. His significant contributions to the independence of the United States from Britain has been recognized by various groups and regions, but is still left out of most textbooks. Like many in his distinguished family, he chose a military career. By the age of 16, he was serving as a lieutenant in a war with Portugal, which led to his promotion to captain. In 1769, he was selected for service in New Spain. There he led attacks against the Apache, who were crippling the new Spanish economy in that part of the Americas. In the next few years, he was wounded several times but also found honor and recognition in his service. One of the early crossings of the Pecos River was called Paso de Gálvez in honor of his campaigns on behalf of Spain.

    The Works Projects Administration
Franklin Delano Roosevelt took the helm as president in 1933, while the United States was engulfed in the Great Depression. As soon as he took office, he began pushing through legislation that would become the nation's largest relief programthe Work Projects Administration (WPA). The WPA was later renamed the Works Progress Administration. The WPA provided much-needed jobs for millions of out-of-work Americans. Its legacy to family historians is a wealth of information in the form of indexes, bibliographies, inventories, life histories, photographs, artwork, and other historical materials. While some of these projects are fairly well-known, such as the Soundex Index to the U.S. Federal Censuses (1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920), and Soundex Indexes to Naturalization Petitions in several regions of the country, many of the projects were smaller and may have escaped the attention of many researchers. There are several bibliographies that may be of use to family historians, some of which I located using the LDS Family History Library Catalog online at the FamilySearch site at:

    • a bit more commentary on ``what is unschooling?''
    Index of questions:
  • Why do people choose to educate their children at home?
  • What is the difference between homeschooling and unschooling?
  • What are the regulations for homeschooling in my state? How many days/hours are you required to teach? At what age is my child required to attend school?
  • Where can I get textbooks for a relatively low cost?
  • What about "socialization?"
  • Do public schools have to help us in any way?
  • How will I know what my child is expected to accomplish for any given grade?
  • What is the first step in educating our children at home?
  • How do home-schooled children compare to institutionally-schooled children?
  • What good references and resources exist on the net?
  • How do I find things on the Internet?
Why do people choose to educate their children at home?
"There are probably four major reasons why people choose to keep their children out of school: "1. Religious reasons people feel that schools do not address the spiritual issues and values that they want to convey to their children. In addition, schools do teach other ideas (e.g. evolution) that are at odds with their religious beliefs.

One of the most notable changes involved the widespread making of pottery vessels. Beautifully engraved unissued Certificate of Attendance from the Universal Exposition - Lousiana Purchase Exposition of St. Louis dated 1904. This historic document has an ornate border around it with a vignette of the Festival Hall and Central Cascades with hand drawn angels on both sides looking at the fair. This item has the printed signatures of the fair's president, David Rowland Francis and its secretary, Walter B. Stevens. This unique item is over 99 years old.
    David Rowland Francis
In 1899, Francis led a group in St. Louis that represented all of the Louisiana Purchase states. The group decided to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase in St. Louis. In April 1901, Francis was elected president of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition Company and went on to help plan the St. Louis 1904 World's Fair. His many talents provided vision, enthusiasm and energy to this great endeavor.
Later, he and the company moved to St. Louis.
Francis was elected the mayor of St. Louis in 1885. He won by 1,527 votes. He served the City of St. Louis as mayor until 1888 when he was elected Governor of Missouri.
During his term as Governor of Missouri, Francis led a group to Washington D.C. They wanted to get the Columbian Exposition to be held in St. Louis, but St. Louis had poor facilities at this time so the Exposition was held in Chicago.

The boat, which was under construction by the Delta Queen Steamboat Company, had enormously overrun budget estimates. Projected costs for the construction plans were about $27 million. In addition, parent company Overseas National Airways had suffered two catastrophic plane crashes. Coca-Cola's purchase of the company ensured plans for the Mississippi Queen would be carried out.
