Logo Programming Language
Overview : Devised in the late 60s by Papert and his colleagues at MIT as an educational aid for children, Logo is a subset of LISP and can be used as a serious programming language. Indeed, Burke and Genise's (1987) undergraduate text exclusively uses Logo to explain fundamental principles of computer science, and Shafer's (1986) book on Macintosh AI programming is based on Logo. Logo is compact, making it an excellent vehicle for exploring AI on a PC. A version of Logo exists for virtually every major brand of desktop computer, with versions in most cases marketed by the computer manufacturer. Logo is best known for graphics; the user programs a cursor (called a "turtle") to draw figures on the screen. Graphics aside, Logo has a number of list manipulation functions (in a syntax that is more friendly than LISP's) that make it ideal for AI applications, and random number generating functions that make it suitable for simulations. Goldenberg and Feurzeig (1987) show how Logo can be used to explore computational linguistics, and Harvey's three volumes (1985, 1986, 1987) give a wide range of other applications and projects. Our first instruction causes the turtle to draw a square. Let's analyze our one long line of instruction. All the words you see on the line are names of procedures:
pd
- a procedure that puts the current turtle's pen down and requires no inputs and has no outputs
forward
- a procedure that moves the current turtle in the direction its head is pointing by a certain number of steps. The number is a required input.
right
- a procedure that turns the current turtle to the right by a number of degrees. The number is a required input.
The last two procedures require a number as their input. One very important thing to notice is that some procedures require inputs and some don't. This is the glue that holds a Logo instruction together.
Procedure inputs and output
Logo procedures can be thought of as jigsaw puzzle pieces, and our job as programmers is to build puzzles which fit together properly. The procedures that we will build and the built-in procedures that come with MicroWorlds, have a specific number of inputs. It can be zero inputs (such as

Logo Programming for OS/2
During our September meeting, Neil demonstrated StarLogo on OS/2. The StarLogo compiler actually runs on Java so is available for any platform with a Java Runtime Environment. The environment is a bit beastly on the resources to run. Neil's laptop with 128 Meg of RAM would occasionally freeze while the JRE garbage collector cleaned house. But once it was done, the program would start running again. Just keep that in mind if you want to give it a try. I have not yet had a chance to try it myself, but hope to give it a spin soon. When I do, I'll add a bit more detail to this page on setup, sample code and other assorted bits and bytes. If anyone else would like to try it out and give me some feedback, I'll add it to these pages. You can reach me at robert-kuropkat@attbi.com or just post a note to the email list and I'll pluck it out of there.

  • Each child is taught individually.
  • The child's natural development of language is utilized in the process of learning to read.
  • Children work at their own pace and at their own level.
  • Children have the unique opportunity to fulfill their potential.
  • Habits and skills developed in a Montessori classroom remain for a lifetime.
  • The Montessori classroom is a land of opportunity for the child as well as a truly joyful place to be.
  • Though much has been said about the acedemic achievements of Montessori children, the true value lies in the self-discipline, self-mastery and love of learning that children achieve.

    http://www.magmacom.com/~dsleeth/kids/montessori/p60.htm
    What is the Montessori method?
Montessori is a philosophy and method of education which emphasizes the potential of the young child and which develops this potential by utilizing specially trained teachers and special teaching materials. Montessori recognizes in children a natural curiosity and desire to learn; the Montessori Materials awaken this desire and channel that curiosity into a learning experience which children enjoy. Montessori Materials help children to understand what they learn by associating an abstract concept with a concrete sensorial experience; in this manner, the Montessori child is actually learning and not just memorizing. The Montessori Method stresses that children learn and progress at their own pace so that fast learners are not held back, and slow learners are not frustrated by their inability to keep up.

The course teaches the basics of the computer programming language Logo and its uses in elementary, middle schools, and high schools. This new method of presentation via the world wide web will allow you to learn the language in a more independent setting, free of the normal classroom time and location constraints. The goal of this module is to familiarize you with the Logo programming language and many of the ways you can use it in teaching geometry concepts throughout the curriculum. Because you are a mathematics teacher who is familiar with geometry, the way we have chosen to achieve this goal is to have you go to many different locations on the world wide web and to work through the lessons as you might have students work through them. You do not,of course, need to have your students use the same level of involvement of the world wide web, but this will help you see the resources available to you on the web. We will also have you complete some projects in logo to demonstrate your facility with the language. Some quizzes will also be required either by email or by an online facility currently under development.

This Images demonstrates drawing a centered String command dcS. The String's heading follows the turtle. Note the use of alpha transparency. From the first demo in version 2 beta, this spiral has a constant step size and a growing disc diameter, and a decaying change in theta. This demonstrates the layering of images ontop of a drawing. It also demonstrates the png endcoder which was use for the screen capture. If you love Logo, you see things with a Logo eye. That's to say you decompose shapes to turtle commands. This was part of a chair that just had to be realized in AJLogo. This was inspired by the background at Cat's Eye Technologies .It was another 'how fast can I replecate this' challenge (took about 30 min). This uses a Model to allow real-time drawing of numerous repetive shapes. Adding the third dimension to the otherwise flat recursive tree really adds to this image. The standard Lissajous figure is shown here with controls over x/y ratio. An interesting experiment, this is the programatic flood filling of an object. By using alpha transparency, multipule fills appear darker.

    Logo programming language
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Logo is a computer programming language based on LISP (with a radically different syntax ) designed by Seymour Papert in the late to teach computer skills to children. Papert is a professor at MIT , and the author of Mindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas . Logo is from the Greek word "logos" meaning "word".
    Turtle Graphics
One of its most notable features was called "Turtle Graphics"; a system for creating graphics that allowed a Logo user to easily produce visual effects from simple programs. The idea was that a turtle with a pen strapped to it could be instructed to do simple things like move forward 100 spaces or turn around. From these building blocks you could draw more complex shapes like squares, triangles, circlesusing these to draw houses or sail boats. The turtle moved with commands that were relative to its own position, "LEFT 90" meant rotate left by 90 degrees. A student could understand (and predict and reason about) the turtle's motion by imagining what she would do if she were the turtle. Papert called this "body syntonic" reasoning.
