Healthy Animals = A Healthy Agricultural Economy = A Healthy and Happy Public A primary goal of the Division of Animal, Plant and Food Industry Services is providing support to Virginia's animal agriculture industry. By administering laws and regulations that apply to health requirements for livestock and poultry, we strive to prevent and control the spread of disease through commerce - both in and out of state. Our veterinarians and field inspectors also work with local officials in the investigations of animal cruelty cases and provide livestock, poultry and companion animal owners with advice and instructions on the proper care and handling of their animals. Our laboratory system offers clients a wide range of testing services to diagnose livestock and poultry disease and consequently aid in their prevention and control. The Division of Animal, Plant and Food Industry Services is composed of the administrative Office of the

Organic Research at VEERU
Most of the work in the organic animal health and welfare area has been carried out by a team of three VEERU staff members: Malla Hovi (veterinarian) Dr. Stephen Roderick (animal productionist)
Past and current work:
Organic livestock production: Animal health and welfare constraints The research started in 1995 with a survey commissioned by the Animal Health Trust. Organic livestock producers were surveyed by a postal questionnaire on their perception and approach to animal health and welfare problems on their farms. A report was published in 1996, outlining future research needs in the field of animal health and welfare in organic livestock production. The following work, based on the survey, has been published: Roderick, S., Short, N. and Hovi, M. Organic livestock production: Animal health and welfare research priorities , 1996, University of Reading. Short, N., Roderick, S. and Hovi, M. Animal health and welfare issues on organic farms, Ecology and Farming, 1997, 15, 24-25 Short, N., Roderick, S. and Hovi, M. The primary objective of the project is to improve information exchange between researchers working within the field of organic livestock production, and to produce accessible information for organic livestock producers, advisory bodies, veterinary professionals, and policy-makers on animal welfare husbandry and health within organic livestock production systems. It is envisaged that improved information sharing will lead to better definition of animal welfare, animal integrity and livestock husbandry standards in organic agriculture. In so doing, the project will contribute towards more successful organic livestock production systems, improved animal welfare and health, and improved customer confidence in organic animal products. Indirectly, the project will contribute towards increased uniformity in organic standards in various European countries.

Livestock health
Fluorosis in sheep
Revised by Deborah Maxwell, Agency for Food and Fibre Sciences
Key points
  • Ensure water and feed contain low levels of fluorine by testing water and using low-fluorine or defluorinated rock phosphate.
  • If sheep ingest large quantities of fluorine rapidly it can cause death.
  • Continuous consumption of toxic levels of fluorine by young sheep causes chalky, mottled and pitted teeth; thickening of the lower jaw and bony outgrowths that impairs foraging.
  • There is no treatment, so prevention is aimed at restricting the opportunity for sheep to consume high levels of fluorine, particularly young sheep that are most susceptible.
Introduction
Fluorine in small quantities in the diet of sheep has a beneficial effect on the teeth and bone; in excess it is toxic. The main sources of excess fluorine in the diet are:
  • water containing dissolved fluorides and
  • foodstuffs containing high levels of fluorides, eg rock phosphate.
