Education and Culture Jewish education in Tavrig was very developed. A Jewish Kindergarten and a modern "Kheder"-"Talmud-Torah" with 120-160 pupils were founded and directed by Lis. The "Kheder" was housed in a special building, built with the help of local philanthropist Leib Baikovitz. About 200 children studied at the Hebrew school of the "Tarbuth" chain in its own building, which had been erected with the help of the 'Tavrigers" in America. Among the teachers were Lazovsky and Furman. An additional 200 children studied in the four classes Hebrew pro-gymnasium until 1940, when it was closed under Soviet rule. A former Tavrig Jew in America named Miler donated money for the erection of a modern building for the pro-gymnasium, to be equipped with water supply, sewage and central heating. The inauguration of the building took place in February 1930, its last director being Chaim Mariampolsky. The first director was Efraim Leibzon. The Language of a Culture
Focus:
The role of the Lithuanian language as a means of cultural preservation and political expression.
Resources:
Background:
The Lithuanian language belongs to the Indo-European groups of languages and has retained a great many of its ancient features. The Lithuanian noun has two genders and seven declensional cases and the verb has four tenses. The earliest "cousins" of the Lithuanian language can be traced to the Finno-Ugric language in which words of Lithuanian origin make up one percent of the total vocabulary. Many Lithuanian words are used by Belrusians and Poles in the areas formerly inhabited by Lithuanians. A dictionary of the Lithuanian language, which is nearing publication, will consist of 20 volumes and will contain about 400,000 entries. Language and its expression through stories, songs, legends and riddles have always been important to the Lithuanian people. The mor ethan 80,000 folktales regostered in Lithuania have perpetuated the language, stimulated thinking, fused the people into a nation and helped keep that nation alive.

Keeping Culture Alive
Focus:
Identifying and appreciating the variety of ways the Lithuanian people have preserved and perpetuated their cultural identity.
Resources:
Worksheet, "Keeping Culture Alive"

Background:
Culture can be defined as the arts, beliefs, customs, tradtions and institutions of a people as well as all the products of human thought and work created by a people at a particular time. Lithuanian's periodic occupation and suppression of its cultural heritage by foreign nations since its earliest history has instilled in each generation determination to preserve the country's culture through its native language, folk songs and dances, and cultural heritage. Even Lithuanian's living outside their native country participate in a dual cultural system. Lithuanian-Americans, Lithuanian-Australians, and Lithuanian-Brazilians participate in the cultures of their new countries yet maintain the Lithuanian language and culture.
Activities:
1. Introduce students to the concept of culture, and cultural identity by beginning close to home. Without telling students what the items have in common, write a list of items associated with your school on the chalkboard (e.g. your mascot, school colors, name of school newspaper, name of sports teams, dress code, in- house terms, etc.) Ask students what all the items have in common. Discuss:
  • For whom do these items have particular meaning? For every U.S. citizen? For every young person? For every person associated with this particular school?

JTA - 06.20.02 Jewish Telegraphic Agency In Lithuanian Town, Woman's Dream Helps Students Know Jewish Culture
By Adam B. Ellick

PLUNGE, Lithuania, June 20 (JTA) — It’s 2:10 p.m. and the school bell has sounded, leaving most students free to congregate in their usual cliques before heading toward the city center, where they will gossip over a few beers.
Few students want to stick around Saules High School at this hour. But don’t tell that to 15 non-Jewish Lithuanian girls who spend two afternoons a week in a bare, Communist-era classroom learning about a Jewish culture that is all but dead in this tiny Baltic nation.
Jewish life in Plunge, a small town in northwestern Lithuania, came crashing down in 1941 when 2,300 Jews were brutally slaughtered by the Nazis and their Lithuanian collaborators. Today only one Jew remains in town.
He is Jacob Bunka, the featured guest at today’s gathering of the Circle of Jewish Culture. The students greet him by swaying to their favorite tune.
“Tum ba-la-la, tum ba-la-la, tum ba-la lai-ka!” they sing.

DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AND CENTRE OF THE HISTORY OF WEST LITHUANIA AND PRUSSIA The aim of the history studies is to convey to students the idea of Baltic culture, the problems of the history of Lithuania, its neighbouring countries, the Baltic Sea countries at the level of modern conceptions. The aim of the studies is to teach students to work with various historical sources (including sources in foreign languages), to help them to acquire the habits of original work and scientific research. The history studies programme is directed not only at analysing the history of the Baltic States, but also at pre-historical and historical problems of the region (Samogitia, West Lithuania). A great deal of attention is paid to the analysis and violation of certain stereotypes in Lithuanian history, and how these attempts influence historians and historical studies of other countries (Poland, Germany).
