...an approach to lesson planning so intellectually engaging that students are keen to follow. Carol Jago
Do students respond to your question "What is the theme?" with a resounding silence? Does "What do you think?" meet with only a few raised hands and little enthusiasm? Is mastering the art of falling asleep undetected your students' greatest ambition? Maybe it's time to take a new tack... Robert McMahon has contributed something genuinely new to the teaching of classic and contemporary literature in high school—a system of teaching English that achieves classroom control through engagement and interest in content. As longtime teacher Carol Jago attests, McMahon's approach to literature is so stimulating that students eagerly respond. The provocative questions he poses help students build a kind of mental muscle for reading challenging texts and, what's more, interacting with them.

THE MATH TOOLS PROJECT
Back to the need for work step two
Step 1: Creating the Repository
Collecting and Reviewing Tools
Texas Instrument has by far the largest collection of material available for programmable calculators. As mentioned earlier, Palm Pilot, Visor and WIN CE products are bursting onto the scene. One of our partners, SRI, will help us track these newer platforms as tools develop for them (further discussed in the Sustainability section). If you know where to look, there are many mathlets on the Web. Two of our partners are highly regarded for the quality of their applet production, the Shodor Foundation and Utah State's National Library of Virtual Manipulatives. Each has a collection of around 100 tools. The Math Forum also has at least 500 other appropriate tools that students have collected, tested, and screened as part of the JOMA project. The Shodor Foundation in making their collection available to us will develop resources to help existing high-quality collections expose their metadata and become accessible to the many users of NSDL. More particularly, they will develop a community object toolset that will enable collections to expose their existing materials to the digital libraries while facilitating the building of new tools. This is going beyond merely tagging existing applets but would be tested by accomplishing this. See their subcontract for more information. We will collect and review regular commercial computer programs larger than mathlets, and will work with Key Curriculum Press to assure that we develop a solution appropriate for software publishers and that we include all the major programs.

66. Details About The Major In Film And Media Studies
students in film and media studies need to gain the same kind of insider’s understandingof the tools of the trade that literature students learn by writing.
http://www.artsci.wustl.edu/~fms/about.html
Details about the Major in Film and Media Studies As our national and international cultures become increasingly dominated by visual culture, we acknowledge the need to study those forms which provide our chief sources of entertainment and information. This need speaks to our desire to become critical viewers, knowledgable in the history of the most popular art forms of our century and possessing the analytical skills to understand and interpret visual forms of expression. The undergraduate major in film and media studies requires the rigorous study of history and aesthetics in an attempt to understand the creative force of an individual art work, its relation to other artistic production, and its place in culture. Furthermore, because film and media creations are most often produced within an industrial context, the student of film and media must also study industrial and business practices. Students who gain skills in writing and analysis, as they should in any rigorous course of study in the humanities, can work in many professions, such as journalism and publishing, business, law, medicine, social work, and teaching. Film and media majors who seek careers in the entertainment and information industries will certainly gain an intellectual perspective on these forms that should enhance their professional lives. But this major will also benefit any student looking at other possible professions because it shares the aim of a liberal arts curriculum to train students in rigorous analytical thinking and provide them with historical knowledge.

Special Interest Page A circle of sharing Cyber library communities of caring adults who assist them in the learning process at home, in the school, in the public library, and in other local institutions. Most importantly, it believes in students as thoughtful human beings who can, and will, study, question, think about, and discuss the broadest possible range of perspectives on various topics. School personnel also need to work closely with public librarians to insure that students find the resources and the assistance required to complete assignments outside of the school setting. Although we often think of the school library media center as being curriculum-based and the public library as primarily for the recreational reading of young people; it is obvious that, in most communities, much school work is completed in the public library. Cooperation between these two institutions is essential to meet the needs of young learners. PRODUCING LINKS OF LITERATURE ACROSS THE CURRICULUM Select a topic directly connected to the curriculum. Identify key areas within that topic, either those that are common in a given grade level or those that might pose difficulties for students seeking materials. Identify the place of that topic both within the discipline and within the particular curriculum. Study curriculum guides, textbooks, or other teaching guides to determine materials that both support the curriculum as designated and present viable alternative views.

Tips from the Literature Tom Creed, 1997, Extending the Classroom Walls Electronically Some cautions:
  • Electronic communication should meet a need. Electronic communication should be driven by effective pedagogy. Start with what you already use and know well. Electronic communication has a steep learning curve, and can be frustrating for others. Electronic communication can be a time sink. Much of the context of electronic communication is lost. Not everything is communicated well textually.
A few tips:
  • The better you and your students understand the technology, the more useful it will be for you. Know how to get help. Choose the most widely accessible technology.
Alexander Romiszowski and Johan de Hass, 1989, Computer-Mediated Communication for Instruction To set a good climate for electronic communication:
  • Start with a welcome message. Reinforce students' early attempts at participation. Reference students' responses in your comments. Model expected behavior.
To be a good facilitator:
  • Keep the main discussion on track by providing leading questions.
