In recent years, the place of human beings in social theories has changed from "the individual," "the social actor," or "the self" to "the subject." In this class we will read a number of social theorists to discover how and where they place the subject. We will begin with four 19th century theorists, each of whom founded a theoretical tradition: Karl Marx (critical theory), Emil Durkheim (structuralism), Max Weber (action theory/social constructionism) and Sigmund Freud (psychoanalytic theory). We will consider each of these traditions and end with a consideration of post-structuralist and post-colonial theorists like Julia Kristeva, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Stuart Hall and Trinh Mihn-ha. Abstract World Wide Web has provided higher education institutions an effective medium to distribute course materials over the Internet. Unfortunately there is no single standard that describes how courses should be created and distributed over the Web. There has been a proliferation of Web course development tools that can be used to create course materials and have these accessed by students from remote sites. This document describes applications of Web Course Development Tools, their evaluation and selection for large campus wide deployment. The purpose of this document is not to provide vendor specific evaluations, but to describe the methodology and selection process for course development tools that provided best fit based on existing infrastructure, faculty experience, needs, and additional criteria which emerged during the evaluation process.

The tools and materials used by the artist are relatively few, with the most important being his paints. Paints contain colored materials that are referred to as pigments. The artist's brush is made from the hairs of animals such as camels or oxen. The first paintings were created over 30,000 years ago in the Chauvet Caves in France and painting techniques have continued to develop from that time forward. Included in modern methods are fresco, tempera, oil painting, acrylics, casein, and watercolors. While each has distinct qualities, the artist typically will choose a method based on his or her specific preferences and on the nature of his or her work. The links included herein relate specifically to painting tools and techniques.

Ideas for library/
information assignments Students need to acquire the ability to find, evaluate, and use information . But the skills required to find the best information, and in the most efficient manner, are ones that must be taught and practised - and practised - and practised. The term/research paper has been the most commonly used method of evaluating whether or not students can successfully apply information seeking skills - but there are other ways. Often the library has been the place where they did their research - and it still should be. Now many of the resources of the library are available outside of the building and are accessible through the home pages of the MUN Library System We want to work with you to plan assignments which will make good use of the resources of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Libraries, and to present research classes for your courses. Call us at 737-7427, e-mail Dianne Cmor , or come to the Information Services Division in the Queen Elizabeth II Library and talk with us. Let's explore some of the alternatives to term/research papers.

Why This Goal Is Important:
Understanding culture is integral to learning and understanding a language. This goal emphasizes not only the process of learning about the country and its culture, but also the fact that language and culture are inseparable. Through a range of materials in print and other media, students gain a richer understanding of both culture and language. Culture consists mainly of language, literature, fine arts, media, history and geography related to various peoples in the world. Students need to develop an understanding of how customs and traditions are shaped by speakers of language and how that language reflects those customs and traditions. As a result of their schooling students will be able to: Learning Standards Stage 1

Back to School with Microsoft: New Tools, New Technology Office XP, Windows XP Professional Have Done Their Homework, Too REDMOND, Wash., Aug. 8, 2002 Some traditions are here to stay. Every autumn, for instance, students rely on hard-bound books, lined paper, and ink pens. But there's a new player in the back-to-school mix that's become more prominent with each passing year: technology. For this fall's annual back-to-school pilgrimage, Microsoft expects to make learning easier and better for students, parents, and teachers by offering tools and resources developed specifically for academic endeavors. The latest version of Microsoft Encarta officially Microsoft Encarta Reference Library 2003 - was released in June in time for upcoming homework assignments. Also, Microsoft and National PTA teamed up to develop a homework Website to help parents discover new ways to assist their children with homework. Other tools to help with homework include Office XP for Students and Teachers, Windows XP Professional and Optical WheelMouse (see sidebar). And, until Sept. 30, Microsoft will donate 5 percent of every sale of these products to the National PTA, which plans to use the funds to enhance local and national parent programs.

Equity Challenge of the Month - January
Schools are increasingly moving in the direction of abolishing tracking systems that sort students by ability level. While such changes promote equity, they also mean that teachers must deal with the complexities of a heterogeneous classroom. One way to meet the needs of all students in such a classroom is by differentiating instruction. Depending in who you ask, differentiated instruction can mean everything from working with "gifted" and "special needs" students to drawing from Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development defines the term and its uses this way: "Differentiated instruction is a teaching philosophy based on the premise that teachers should adapt instruction to student differences. Rather than marching students through the curriculum in lockstep, teachers should modify their instruction to meet students' varying readiness levels, learning preferences, and interests." This definition goes beyond adding extension problems for "gifted" students or basic drill exercises for students who are struggling: "A class is not differentiated when assignments are the same for all learners and the adjustments consists of varying the level of difficulty of questions for certain students, grading some students harder than others, or letting students who finish early play games for enrichment."
