Online course communication tools enable students to interact with course content, the instructor, and their peers outside of the classroom. Students are given the opportunity to negotiate the meaning of course content through these interactions - creating the potential for a deeper and longer lasting learning. A virtual learning community that provides support and sharing among its members can be built through the integration of online communication tools and course activities and sustained through effective facilitation by the instructor. This document describes how Blackboard tools can be used to facilitate collaboration and interaction, including the following topics:

Valerie Barron The secondary school's mission is to prepare students for graduation from high school. Mastering the core secondary curriculum is a difficult task for students who are also learning English, especially those who must bridge academic and literacy gaps resulting from interruptions in their prior education ( McKeon , 1994). The challenge for many ELL students is that the academic English necessary to function in a school setting may take four to seven years to acquire under the best of circumstances, while the time students have to master the subjects required for high school graduation is limited ( , 1997). In addition, the secondary curriculum places much higher cognitive demands on students than does the elementary curriculum ( , 2000). Students are expected to be able to grasp abstract concepts, construct complex arguments, and work with subject-specific vocabulary that may have different meanings in everyday conversation (for example, "irrational" in math or "work" in science). Likewise, the charge of making content instruction accessible to ELLs places new strains on mainstream content area teachers who increasingly find ELLs in their classes. DRAFT An Evaluation of Synchronous Course Management Tools for Online Instruction on the NCSU Campus Theresa-Marie Rhyne, Stacy Smith, Lee Collins and Tim Lowman Submitted to: Sharon Pitt, Director of Learning Technology Service Distance Education and Learning Technology Applications North Carolina State University This report examines synchronous course management tools and their applicability to online instruction at North Carolina State University (NCSU). Executive Summary: After an extensive literature search along with comprehensive product demonstrations and evaluations, the LearnLinc synchronous course management tool from Mentergy Ltd seems optimally suited for the North Carolina State University (NCSU)’s varied learning environments. During our product evaluations, we were hopeful of finding a synchronous course management environment that supported the entire suite of computer platforms used for instruction across the NCSU campus. These computer architectures include Windows, Macintosh, Solaris-Unix, and Linux platforms. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful in finding a synchronous course management system that worked across all of these platforms. LearnLinc requires a Windows server and only supports Window clients. Given the current budget climate, we also provide an alternative to the immediate purchase of LearnLinc. We suggest that LTS/DELTA consider a low cost alternative of collaborating with the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) involving the usage of Centra Symposium for pilot synchronous course instruction. In exchange for using CTE’s Centra Symposium for pilot distance education instruction, DELTA could provide customized training or course development to CTE.

Mission Statement The mission of the Department of African Languages and Literature is to provide research and teaching in the areas of African languages, linguistics, literature, and oral traditions. This includes work on both graduate and undergraduate levels, and emphasizes the development and application of analytical and methodological tools that will enable students to work effectively and imaginatively in the four areas. The four areas are not considered mutually exclusive: the interconnections of these disciplines are studied closely and creatively. It is in the linkages among the disciplines that the Department makes its most significant and original contributions to knowledge. The Department's mission is also to produce graduate students who are capable of conducting original research and of providing teaching of quality in African languages, linguistics, oral traditions, and literature; students who will assure the future strength and health of these fields, who will carry our work to other institutions and countries. Through our teaching and our publications, we regularly inform and define, develop and give richness to our several disciplines, and so have a shaping influence on the field generally.

The focus of the major is generally on the history of ideas as reflected in German written documents. Students may also concentrate in German Film Studies. The concentration in Germanic linguistics aims to ensure familiarity with the basic tools of research in linguistics and philology and to provide the student with a thorough knowledge of selected areas of specialization. Students may focus on one or more of the following: the structure of modern German; the history of German; comparative Germanic linguistics; and the older Germanic languages.
