A Light Station for East Brother San Francisco Bay ranks among the world's great natural harbors. Though the Golden Gate at its narrowest point is but a mile wide, it opens into a bay covering nearly 450 square miles. The bay has not none harbor but dozens along its one hundred miles of meandering shoreline. San Francisco Bay proper stretches from Alviso near San Jose in the south to points San Pablo and San Pedro in the north. Between these two points lies San Pablo Strait. The two islands called The Brothers mark the east side of the strait, a quarter mile off point San Pablo. On the west side are two similar islands named The Sisters. It is not known who named these two sets of islands or mountains in this way. Two islands also called The Brothers lie just south of Cape Mendocino in Humboldt County. The names for the San Francisco Bay islands became official in 1851 when the U.S. Coast Survey used them in preparing the first accurate map of the bay.
These early plans for a light station on East Brother were drafted by Assistant Lighthouse Engineer E.J.Molera and were never used. (U.S. Coast Guard)

... County Chamber The Mainstay Inn Highly acclaimed and award-winning restaurants go hand in hand with the Victorian i nns and distinguish Cape May from other towns. The resort has been provided an escape for city dwellers since the days when U.S. Presidents Benjamin Harrison and Ulysses S. Grant spent summers here in the 19th century. Cape May is also the only New Jersey seaside resort where you can watch the sunset over the water from the beach (Sunset Beach is located at the southernmost part of town.) Whale-watching and fishing charters leave from Cape May, which remains one of the most successful commercial fishing ports on the East Coast. Sightseeing tours on tall ships are also available in season.. Another fun family activity is searching the bay-side beaches for Cape May diamonds (really quartz stones that have been polished smooth by the movement of the tides). While on that side of town, you may want to check out the Cape May Lighthouse, Cape May Point State Park. Built in 1859, this is one of the oldest continually operating lighthouses in the U.S.

Printing this file several pages at a time will result in a finished product of higher quality and in a format that more closely resembles that on the screen. LIGHTHOUSE RESOURCE FOR GRADES K -4 THE SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES RELATE TO VARIOUS DISCIPLINES - ART, SCIENCE, LANGUAGE ARTS, MATH, HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY. GOALS 1. To familiarize children with lighthouses as aids to navigation. 2. To have students gain a basic understanding of lighthouse operation and the evolution of lighthouse technology. 3. To make children aware of the historic role of lighthouses and their current status. 4. To teach children the properties of light and how these are employed to enhance the effectiveness of the light signal. The Story of the Lighthouse Many, many years ago (thousands of years to be more exact), people lived m a very primitive wayboth hunting for and growing their own food (there were no supermarkets in those days, no stores at all!). Eventually they decided to explore the water in a boat to find out what the sea had to offer in the way of food. And, what did they find? They found fish and all kinds of other seafood: clams, mussels, scallops, oysters, lobsters, crabs, etc. During the day they could find their way back to the landing place by looking for a pile of rocks that had been left there.

Lighthouses: FAQ
Source: The United States Coast Guard Our first lighthouses were actually given to us by Nature. Sailors sometimes used landmarks such as glowing volcanoes to guide them. In the Ancient World, trading ships were eventually built enabling navigators to sail long distances to buy and sell goods. In the days of wooden ships with sails, the wind and waves could easily push them against the rocks and wreck them. And so, the need for lighthouses as warning signals arose. Today we call people who study (or are interested in) lighthouses pharologists. The name comes from that famous lighthouse. What is a lighthouse? It is a tower with a bright light at the top, located at an important or dangerous place regarding navigation (travel over water). The two main purposes of a lighthouse are to serve as a navigational aid and to warn boats of dangerous areas. It is like a traffic sign on the sea. Do all lighthouses look alike? Although we often think of a lighthouse as a tall, white conical tower, there are many, many variations of design. Depending on its location, it might be tall (where the land was very flat) or short and squat (where there was a high cliff or rocky coast). It could be square, octagonal (with eight sides), conical (like an ice cream cone upside down), or cylindrical (like a very fat pipe). When the lighthouses were built, they were constructed with whatever materials were most readily available. They were designed to fit the local geographic and climatic conditions. Some are made of stone; others brick, concrete, wood, steel, cast iron, and even tabby (a mixture of shells, lime, sand and water).

Lighthouses of the Pacific Coast
Click on photo for review Your Guide to the Lighthouses of California, Oregon, and Washington
People all over are looking for adventurous, historical travel destinations. Interest in lighthouses is at an all-time high. "Lighthouses of the Pacific Coast" addresses both pursuits-a history and a guide rolled into one, it's an exciting way for readers to learn more about the history of these useful yet architecturally significant structures. "Lighthouses of the Pacific Coast" details the fascinating development of the lighthouses on the Pacific Coast through the Pacific Northwest. This discussion focuses on the technological evolution of lighthouses, the actual lights and development of lenses, the architecture of the lighthouses and how they were built and maintained on remote sites, life for the Lighthouse Service keepers, and the movement today to preserve and restore lights. As lively as the text is, it's the stunning photography that really sets this book apart. These are not generic depictions of staid lighthouses in daylight; here, readers will find intriguing images of lights that were shot from boats, helicopters, and airplanes-many at low light or during storms, which is when lighthouses are especially important. The photographs even bring readers inside the structures, showing the curling stairways, lenses, keeper's homes, and more.

Puerto Rico of the Caribbean
Written by Julie Greiner
Puerto Rico is the island between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. Being only 1,000 miles south of Miami, Florida and under the U.S. customs jurisdiction - there is free movement between the United States and Puerto Rico. American in feeling, Latin at heart... this is the window to the Caribbean. There are luxurious resorts, golf, tennis, fishing, diving, horse racing and baseball - all entwined in history.
Mangos, Passion Fruit and Climate to Match
though hurricane season is May through November - this is a good time to enjoy off season perks.
Shopping, Casinos and Nightlife of Puerto Rico
San Juan, the metropolitan capital of Puerto Rico is notorious for its numerous plazas. Plaza Las Americas in Hato Rey is the largest shopping mall in the Caribbean and has 190 stores including J.C. Penney's, Sears, Macy's and smaller boutiques and specialty shops. Hand made cigars, rum and local artisan crafts are the commodities Puerto Rico is known for. The beach and resort areas are outside Old San Juan, Condado, Miramar, Ocean Park and Isla Verde. This is where the hotels with casinos, nightclubs, restaurants, boutiques and spas are prevalent.
Attractions in Puerto Rico
Once you have pulled yourself away from the beach and resort areas you can start to discover the old world architecture and parks. Rio Camuy Caves Park in Hatillo has the world's third largest underground river. You will see caverns as high as twenty-story buildings. Ponce is the architectural gem on the southern coast, founded in 1692 and Puerto Rico's second largest city. Puerto Rico has two phenomenal bio-luminescent bays where micro-organisms in the water light up. El Unque, the only tropical rain forest in the Americas, is only thirty minutes from San Juan.

William Hutchinson
Hutchinson was a remarkable man, who rose from being a common sailor to be a privateer captain alongside Fortunatus Wright, the most famous of the Liverpool privateers. Hutchinson was at various times a ship-owner, boat-builder, commercial trader, local politician, inventor, author and philanthropist. His character was more like that of the Puritan 17th century than the 18th century, combining the aggression of privateering with strict religious adherence. For example, he abhorred swearing, which must have made life difficult aboard ship. Two particular aspects of Hutchinson's life are of interest to us at Bidston. First, Hutchinson is known to have had an interest in mirrors and illumination mechanisms for lighthouses. He experimented with the construction of large one-piece mirrors up to 12 feet diameter, and large mirrors made from smaller sections of looking-glass fixed to a wooden backing frame. He also developed oil-fired light apparatus, lighthouses at this time usually being lit by 'firebaskets' containing wood or coal. The Liverpool Council Minutes record that in 1763 he experimented with his reflectors at the Bidston Hill signal station, which became Bidston Observatory, and at which the first Bidston lighthouse was constructed in 1771.
