Lighthouses of Chesapeake Bay
Who ever heard of Laban Gossigan? The name would probably stump Jeopardy ’s finest. But when Laban Gossigan climbed the spiral, stone staircase and lighted the lantern of the Cape Henry Lighthouse in 1792, he became the first keeper of the first lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay, beginning a long tradition. People are fascinated by lighthouses in a way that is hard to explain. These towers and houses of brick, stone, wood, iron, and steel attract people like few other man-made structures. The Smith Point light tower was again replaced with a new lightship in 1859, and this lightship was replaced by the new screwpile-style lighthouse in 1868. Screwpile lighthouses are built on pilings literally screwed deep into the bedrock. This structure suffered the fate of many screwpile lighthouses on the bay when it was damaged by ice in 1893, repaired, then knocked completely off its pilings and carried away by ice floes in 1895. An ice-resilient caisson foundation was used in 1897 for the present lighthouse. Caissons are watertight enclosures, usually round, that enable construction to be carried on underground. The Smith Point Light was automated in 1970 and is known today not only by ship captains, who are guided by it, but by anglers, who regard it as one of the best fish attractants on the Chesapeake Bay.

The Corson's Inlet Coast Guard Station
(please click on images for larger views)
Before 1915, the U.S. Coast Guard was known as the U.S. Life Saving Service. It was established in 1871, and 280 stations were built along the east and west coast and the Great Lakes for search and water rescue. The Corson's Inlet Life Saving Station once stood on the beach at 58th street in Ocean City. In 1915 the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and U.S. Life-Saving Service were combined and renamed the U.S. Coast Guard. They started moving oceanfront stations to the bayside in several areas. They did this so that they would be able to use the new bigger motorboats, which were better launched in deeper bay waters. In 1925, the base for Corson's Inlet Coast Guard was moved from Ocean City's 58th street beach to Strathmere's bay.
To the left is a really nice old image of the Coast Guard building during it's early days in Strathmere.
Above on the left is an old image from the Coast Guard of Corson's Inlet Life Saving Station after it was built in 1872. The style of the building was known as 'Red House'. The second photo shows the 58th Street building after it was enlarged in 1899 to the 'Jersey Pattern' style of building. The station stood beachfront on 58th street on the Ocean City side of the inlet. In February of 1924, a storm caused massive damage to the bulkhead in front of the station. In May of that year the US Coast Guard sent a representative to hold a town meeting about closing the station. The local Ocean City residents and representatives greatly opposed the closing of the station and emphasized it's importance. But by July the government had announced that it would close the 58th street station and relocate it to the south side of Corson's Inlet, in Strathmere. They pointed out that moving to the bay would enable them to build a new launchway building equipped with the new high speed boats. The main body of the station was dismantled, moved, and rebuilt in Strathmere in 1924-25.

You'll learn that, just like today's airlines, sailing ships often had to "circle" before conditions were right for a landing. And why each lighthouse has its own color and shape as well as its own code for flashes and foghorn blasts. (Any guesses why there are no white lighthouses where it snows a lot?)
Celebrate Lighthouse Month. It could be a very enlightening experience.

The Navesink Light Station
In colonial America, lighthouses were built initially at busy harbors. The New World's first lighthouse was located at Boston and illuminated on 14th September 1716. More were to follow....some at busy ports and others placed on prominent headlands or dangerous stretches of the Atlantic coast.
The Highlands of Navesink was one such headland. Rising 200 feet above sea level, the heights were observed by all the early navigators. Henry Hudson sailed his ship Half-Moon into Sandy Hook Bay in 1609. Robert Juet, a ship's officer, kept a detailed log of the sailing. On 2nd September he wrote "far to the Northward of us wee saw high hills. This is a very good land to fall with and a pleasant land to see." The next day Juet noted "The morning 'mystie until ten of the clocke, then it cleared, and the wind came out of the Southwest so wee weighed anchor and stood to the Northward. The land is very pleasant and high and bold to fall withall"

The oldest operating lighthouse in North Carolina, the present Ocracoke Lighthouse sits on a picturesque, quaint island with beautiful beaches and a charming village. It can only be reached by ferry. Since its construction, it has always been painted white. In the early days keepers painted it with a whitewash concocted by the Lighthouse Board the recipe called for "half a bushel of unslaked lime with boiling water, a peck of salt, half a pound of powdered Spanish whiting, three pounds of ground rice put in boiling water and a pound of clear glue." Blackbeard Ocracoke Inlet is the longest-lived inlet known to man on the Outer Banks, existing when John White painted the Banks in 1585 and supposedly for hundreds of years before. One of its most colorful inhabitants was the notorious Edward Teach, or "Blackbeard the Pirate."

Lighthouses around the country are prized for their architecture and maritime history. They are also memorials to countless lives saved at sea. A tour of New England's lighthouses is a great American trip. You can do this state by state, starting in Connecticut. Many of Connecticut's warning beacons, that were once fueled with whale oil, are still safeguarding fishermen and sailors on the sound. These lighthouses conjure up visions of sea captains ending long ocean voyages, greeted by dangerous coastal ledges and rock outcroppings that could take their ships down in no time. Connecticut is home to over 16 lighthouses, many of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. These beautiful structures are in various states of repair and use. Some are publicly held and managed, and some are privately owned. A few of the lighthouses are accessible to the public and others are sadly abandoned and vandalized. Thankfully, many communities and private foundations are taking action to preserve Connecticut's lighthouses. The Lighthouse Preservation Society The Lighthouse Preservation Society was founded in 1984 as a nonprofit organization. Their charter is to

Long Island Lighthouses
It's hard not to love lighthouses. They sit on heaps of rocks, the main buildings like doll houses with imposing towers ready to send bolts of light into the night sky. There's dozens of lighthouses dotting the waters of the Long Island Sound. Eight of them are offshore in the Town of Southold and, according to East End Lighthouses , this makes Southold the Lighthouse Capital of the United States. You wouldn't have thought the waters of Long Island, not exactly a metropolitan area in the 1800s, would require such an extensive system, but it supplied water access to parts of Connecticut, and New York State. Of course if you wanted to ship goods to and from New York City the water offered an alternative to overland hauling. If you're a boater, you can put together your own lighthouse cruise. There are even maps available on East End Lighthouses website, an organization of volunteers dedicated to raising money to restore these unique treasures. If not, you can still enjoy Long Island's maritime history by signing up for one of their fund-raising cruises.

Vast spaces of the Atlantic Ocean were moving underneath. We were preparing to meet America - not the malls-and-cat's but the entheogens-and-meditation's America. JFK International Airport appeared to be a place of "mechanical" energy and gave us a first impression of emotional separateness. The same feeling of emotional isolation and rough rationality accompanied us in New York during our first days. Fortunately, Massachusetts, where we next visited, had a more relaxed and soft energy. The voice of the MAPS president sounded very enthusiastic and inspiring in the telephone. We were more than curious to meet him. Since we thought of him as an important figure, we dressed very officially for our first meeting. Rick appeared to be a smiling, handsome, youthful, relaxed man, informally dressed. His eyes were shining with humor and cunning. Later, after we had known him for awhile and heard some stories about him, we came to feel that he is one of the most accepting and generous persons we've ever met. He is like the embodiment of the spirit of MDMA. We also understood that MAPS is not only an organization but a circle of people attracted and interconnected by Rick's optimistic magnetism.

Some were also lighthouse aficionados. Lighthouse earrings, necklaces, brooches and even belt buckles were regular, sometimes blinking, apparel.

Both couples were big fans of our hosts, Holiday Tours, as their pleasurable experiences with this tour company often allowed for free time with meals on their own.
