Library Instruction The ability to retrieve and assess relevant and reliable information is an important lifelong skill for students, faculty, and the South Carolina community at large. The Clemson University Libraries consider this a core mission and provide many tools and pathways for users to gain experience and competence with information access. Among the Libraries' instruction and orientation activities are:
    • Freshman English orientation classes
English 101 and 102 classes attend a session at the library to learn about major search tools and resources.
      Library Guide for new students
Each year a "Guide to the Libraries" is written and distributed to new Clemson students. This year, students also received an insert inside the first issue of the student newspaper describing library services.
      Subject-specific classes
The subject liaison librarians meet with classes and prepare class handouts and/or web pages to support research needs of specific courses.
      New faculty orientation
New faculty members attend a library orientation session during their two-day introduction to Clemson University.

    Introduction
Collection Care activities fall into several categories. The main tasks are to balance interventive and preventive preservation and ensure that the funding for conservation is well spent. Storage planning work relates to ensuring that collection items are stored in the most appropriate location taking into account factors including value, level of environmental conditions required and the frequency with which an item is likely to be consulted. Other activities such as ownership marking, pressmarking and labelling and placing ensure the security of the collection and help provide access to it. The British Library’s Preservation Board meets annually to decide on the prioritisation and funding of the programmes for conservation. Each collection area bids for studio time and resources. The Corporate Storage Group meets quarterly to act as a forum for developing storage strategy, longer term planning as well as specific ways of managing stock to provide optimum services. This work feeds into the business plan bidding process. Staff are also involved in activities designed to augment the day to day conservation, preservation and collection storage work, to ensure that the Department is able to respond to new challenges and keep the necessary skills base. These activities are detailed in the Annual Business Plan.

The number of librarians incorporated into instructional activities was increased, who were then mentored by other, experienced librarian instructors.
    INT Classes
Teaching methods were evaluated and revised to adapt them to the electronic classroom. INT 100 was revised and offered for the first time since Spring 1992. Assignments were re-written and the course was reorganized to include MELVYL USE commands, instruction on the Mail command on MELVYL, and a new assignment covering the Internet and gopher access. Coordinating with staff at the MicroComputer Lab, e-mail accounts were given out and required for the first time in both INT 1 and INT 100. The Mail command on MELYVL was taught to the INT 1 classes as well.
    Outreach
Collaborating with the Campus Learning Assistance Services staff, four 2-hour workshops on how to start and write research papers were taught in the computerized library classroom.
A guide on how to use the library, and what steps to follow when doing research, was written and included in the 1994-95 KIOSK, the UCSB student handbook.
